Hi Vurbal and thanks again for the help!

I changed the CCE settings by creating a new template in CCE. I clicked on Template --> Standard and then tweaked settings and saved the template under a new name. I made sure that this new template had the checkmark by it. I thought if I did this, then rebuilder would use these settings. How can I use the CCE settings from my new template? Can anyone tell me the steps? Also, bottom line, I'm just frustrated with only one success with DVD-RB/CCE Basic in over 15 tries. What am I doing wrong? I've followed all the guides on Doom and AD and still can't get it to work. [bold] Are there any settings that I could send you guys that would help diagnose my problem? [/bold]

Thanks so much for your help!

No I haven't in over a year or so. I have another partition that I rarely use...I think I'll try on that one. What files tend to get corrupted that would affect DVD-RB/CCE??

DVD RB needs a clean working system configuration to work at its best. Since you have not reinstalled windows in a while, a reinstall will not hurt. It will clean out anygarbage system files and settings made long ago and inot n use today.

I can't tell you specifically what files, and it can be files related to files, and these may be different for everyone. My own experience is, and it happens sooner than a year's worth, it that with upgrades and trying and removing different softwares, things just get messed up. It only takes 1 file to cause nightmares. If anyone else has used your computer for online stuff, well...no one gets near the computer I have set up for video work. You can spend a little time trying to fix a file problem, but sooner or later you have to bite the bullet. The thing is, with a clean install, you eliminate/isolate one main area of concern. You could try to run a sfc system file check) to see if there are any OS files that need repairing. You can get a guide for this by googling. Or, you could run a registry cleaner. Any of these might work, and they might not.

I have to agree. If you're adventurous and you like trying out a lot of different softwares and should they be of a similar purpose then things can get really messed up over time. Some codecs can get really get things screwed up.

    Doc409,

You are very correct about how easy it is to have multiple system configuration errors. There are a lot of good "Fix-It" applications out, but nothing fixes it all. And sometimes the "fix-it" application do more harm then good.

One way to keep your DVD-RB out of trouble is creating two independent versions of windows on your hard drive. One version of windows could be used for standard use - abuse. The other version of windows could be used for DVD-RB and its components. There is a lot of good documents out on the web on this method and its pro's and cons. I have my machine setup in this manor. The DVD-RB partition takes up about 3GB of space. And 3 GB of space is worth my sanity and time.

    Gnomex...

Your setup is certainly a good approach ... and is a less expensive approach than what I opted for. Thanks for sharing it. I finally went to Norton SystemWorks, removable drives/trays, and a couple of towers. One computer is used only for DVD/Video work. Norton lets me clone the drives...so I always have a solid backup. Still, things get messed up every few months, but I can usually clone my way out of it painlessly.

    Doc409,

Thanks for the positive feedback on the DVD-RB system setup. A lack of deskttop space was my main motivator.

Symantec Ghost is a tool everyone should have. Ghost has been one of my oldest and dearest tools for several years.

Bite the bullet eh?? Well, before Ghosting the hard drive, I'm going to try out DVD-RB/CCE on my second partition... a partition with games on it that I rarely use. I'll let you know how it goes. Am I right in assuming that you guys get DVD-RB/CCE to work most of the time? If so, what steps do you use?? If you make changes to the CCE settings, then at what step does CCE come into play since DVD-RB dictates the settings anyway? Vurbal was saying something about creating an ecl file:

OK, what does this mean in laymans terms? Do you guys do this? If so, what steps do you take? If someone is willing to e'mail me to run thru the steps, that would totally help so I don't take up all this space asking what might be stupid questions.

    Cheers!

You have the retail Basic 2.69, and you are over-complicating things. All you need to do is follow the instructions in the setup guide. Don't do anything else in the way of settings...other than what is required of the RB settings. Definitely leave CCE alone. Run an unedited Decrypter file through to test the integrity of the setup.

My point was that DVD-RB sets those things itself. It doesn't ever get settings from CCE. The bottom line is that if you want to change DVD-RB's CCE settings you have to alter the file it creates to store them. There's no other way. You can alter the ECL files with a text editor, but it's unlikely you're going to fix any rebuild errors that way. It's not impossible - but it's pretty close. I definitely wouldn't set it up to do CBR encoding because you'll end up with terrible looking DVDs.

If you're really intent on changing the CCE settings, here's how you can do it. First you need to load an AVS file (you can use one created by DVD-RB) in CCE. Then you can adjust any settings you want and save the project. After that, you'd need to edit the REBUILDER.ECL file in DVD-RB's working folder to use those settings by changing the values to match what's in the ECL file you created. There are 2 hurdles to get past if you do this. First, you have to make sure you don't change any settings that have to do with the input or output file information, meaning you need to identify those lines in the ECL. Second, there are settings in that file for each segment (AVS file) DVD-RB has to encode. That means you'll need to understand using the Find and Replace feature in Notepad (or whatever text editor you use).

I can't stress enough. If you don't know what you're doing it's easier to screw things up than to make them better. Plus, there's almost no chance that different encoder settings will solve your problems. Additionally, you should expect to get no support whatsoever from jdobbs if you change the settings and things don't work. Or at least you should expect the help to be something along the lines of "don't do that". You can also expect approximately the same thing from me (and others here). If you want to learn how to use the settings in CCE that's great, but within the context of DVD-RB there isn't much place for it, and if you don't already know what you're doing you shouldn't expect better results from it.

    spamlover,

I will have to chime in with Doc and vurbal by saying you are trying to make things waaaay too complicated. Most of the problems occur when using trial versions of CCE SP.

Since you have the paid for CCE basic there is no need to do half the stuff I think you're confusing with CCE SP trial steps.

If you follow vurbal's guide it sets up fairly easy and once set up it is truly a one click operation. You browse to the source files in RB and hit transcode. DONE.

All that's left is to burn to disc. :>)

The others are correct, you are over-analysing the problem. Just use the DVD-RB guide found on AD. I was a newbie with this setup a while back and the guide works. There are no ommissions or errors in the guide.

Second, you said you had a second hard drive that contained nothing but games. How-everr, you are still running the same old version of windows. You need a clean slate to avoid potential problems. There are several ways to complete this task, but it comes down to whats available for you.

What I think everyone is essentially say is start over and make certain that you follow Vurbal's guide verbatim. The setup portion of the guide involves only a few paragraphs and if you hate reading then the pictures are enough by themeselves.

OMG! You guys are just awesome! OK, I realized thru this whole experience that my approach to the DVD-RB/CCE project is how I approach life... I make it waaaaaaay more difficult than it has to be. You guys are right. I went to the second partition on the same drive, followed vurbal's guide exactly and "voila", I'm happy to say it worked!! Before I installed CCE Basic 2.69, I had tried out the other versions of CCE SP. I think that this probably screwed it up...maybe left some unwanted files in the registry. No more #0003 or #09 script errors! Woo hoo! Time to Paypal Jdobbs!!

Yes bigo it is, but with you on a continuos software payment plan (avoided the word binge) it was inevitable that it got to its right destination eventually.

    Sophocles,

DVD-RB is a great product and worth donating too. And to date its the only such product to receive a donation from me. Grandted it was not a huge amount but its a start.
