[bold]In CCE advanced options adjust quality_prec to 20 or higher to modify the encode toward smooth. This assumes you are using cce basic 2.69 [/bold]

What about your VBR_bias setting, do you leave it at the default setting of 25? Also in the CCE SP trial what do you recommend for the quality_prec?

I was asked about this in another thread and I'm wondering what most use, any input would be appreciated.

In CCE Basic VBR Bias isn't a user accessible setting, and I'm guessing it uses a value of 30 since that's the default value for CCE SP. Even when I used SP exclusively I never messed with this setting, so I couldn't really give you advice for changing it. I also wouldn't say that quality_prec is a "smoothness" setting. What it does is adjust the priority between solid surfaces, like most walls for example, and motion. A higher value assigns more bitrate to surfaces, while a lower value assigns more to motion. I generally leave this setting at the default value, although I'll change it to 20 for animation since there tends to be more solid surface area than motion.

Hmmm... thanx for the info vurbal, I appreciate it. One thing tho, I'm still using CCE basic v.2.67(old habits die hard, the "if it ain't broke theory"...lol) and VBR_Bias is a user option that is definitely available. The default is set at 25. However I will heed your advice and leave it as is. Again, thanx! :>)

Are you talking about it being available in CCE or in DVD-RB? DVD-RB will show you all options, whether they can be set in your version of CCE or not. Just like you can set the number of passes in DVD-RB even though it's not something you can set in CCE Basic.

Im pretty sure I have stripped down my problem with either CCE or DVD-RB. My problem is, after the entire process of Preparing, Encoding and Rebuilding is done, and then I burn the files... some of the files get corrupted on the DVD during the burn process. If I use PowerDVD and load the files directly from my hdd as a "dvd", everything seems fine. When I burn tho, it plays 3 seconds and then PowerDVD tells me some of the disc is corrupt. When put in my standalone player, it skips the intro where PowerDVD choked at, but then it freezes in parts of the movie and whatnot. I came to the conclusion that DVD-RB/ CCE was the culprit because, if I restart the computer and burn the files after a restart... the dvd comes out perfect. This leads me to believe that some how... even after DVD-RB is 100% done.. the files are left being access somehow.

So my questions now are.... have anyone else had this problem? and how did you fix it. Does anyone know a way I could fix this (other than restart everytime after I finish rebuilding a DVD). I am using version 0.59 of DVD-RB with CCE SP 2.67.00.27 and EclCCE 1.81. I just noticed an update on DVD-RB, but the changes doesnt mention anything I have said. Any help is appreciated.

I've had a similar problem before, and it has always been the result of a HDD with fragmented files. If you find that a file plays correctly in at least one place, I'm nearly certain you can rule out RB-CCE as being the problem.

    dude051,

You said the burn comes out fine after a reboot. No jerky video. At least this is how it read to me. The type of media you are using is working on that level.

You also said it plays back on PowerDVD. Well this means DVD-RB did it's job.

I would first defrag your hard drive to avoid problems with hard drive seek times. Second, question your burner software. There is something going on that impacts your DVD burns. A sharing problem with *.DLL's, a service that does not run all the time.

I hadn't thought of defragmenting, ill try that thanx. The only reason I had beleived it to be dvd-rb/cce (or a dll being shared with them) is because after I restarted those files would not be in use anymore allowing the vob files to be copied fine, so I personally just felt the error lied in there. But then again, what doc409 said about being able to play the file at all would rule out dvd-rb/cce. Im defraggin right now, and im gonna reinstall cce in case. Thank you for all your help.

You would be better off updating your RB to the latest version than reinstalling CCE. However, a good clean install of everything insures a good setup and doesn't hurt anything. I've got a question for you that I didn't notice you having posted. What are your system specs, i.e. amount of RAM, free HD space, CPU type and speed? BTW have you been cleaning your system regularly with anti virus and ad/spyware programs? Also, you need to run disk cleaner regularly. "House cleaning" goes a long way toward smooth operation. Poor system operation due to a lack of maintenance can cause the same problems you noted.

You could probably follow everyone's advice pretty much because it goes to system maintenance.

    Dude,

I also highly recommend getting the retail version of CCE basic if you can swing it. Although I have recently tested your exact trial setup with success for testing purposes, DVDrebuilder seems to have fewer concerns with basic and a lot more experience and support from those who backup a lot of DVDs.
$58 is a bargain for a lifetime of updates.

By the why, does anyone else think [bold]The Big Lebowski[/bold] is a classic comedy?

You're right Donald. I can't understand why anyone wants to go through the hassle of getting an SP trial to work when they end up with a marked video and the problems inherent to the trials. $58 for the purchase of a program of this quality is a "no brainer".

There is always the possibility that it is a cracked program in which case they still should go buy the retail CCE.

As brobear said, it does seem to be my system maintence habits right now. Lastnight after my burn failed again, I restarted thinkin that would fix it. But it didn't. I currently have an AMD 2100+ with a Gigabyte GA-7VKML mobo, 512mb of ram, about 10gb of free space with my working drive for dvd-rb and about 2gigs on my C drive (shouldnt affect my swap file is what I was thinking). I run norton anti-virus once a week, and run Spybot S&D with spyware blaster to pick up stuff. What I know I haven't done in a while is defragmented... this is probably my fault here. [edit]Although... I am beginning to question my media. Last night I made an iso out of the VOB files created from DVD-RB, and burned it to a different media, Sonic 2x-4x media (Media code MUST-001) which I use for everything but DVD backups; and the burn was perfect. I returned this morning and burnt to my more expensive media (Memorex 4x DVD+R InkJet Printable Media, the same media that all my other burns messed up on... a total of 1 out of 6 disc success so far), and the burn had the same aparent problems as before. I ran a defrag during the middle of the night... this raises more and more questions to me... [edit]

On the note of buying retail CCE. This is only about the 3rd dvd I have recompressed using DVD-RB in the past maybe 2 months. I am still trying everything out and plan to purchase the $59 CCE. Thanx for the help.

dude051...thanks for posting your system specs. Your problems are fundamental in nature. Also, most people have tried other transcoders before RB-CCE, and have ironed out what is required to get a good transcode/backup. There are some things you need to look at before expecting any kind of quality backup.

First, 10 GB of disc space just isn't enough. For a 6.5 GB DVD, you will need 6.5 GB for the Decrypter/Shrink files, and then another 8 to 10 GB for the CCE encode. And if you fill the remainder of the drive with these files, they will be fragmented for sure...which will make it hard to get a good burn. I somehow think that you have more hdd space, or you couldn't have gotten this far.

Second, your choice of media (Memorex) will continue to give you jerky videos. You need to get a quality brand like Ritek or Ridata from an online source like newegg.com or meritline.com. There is problably more info on the subject of media choice here at AD than any other topic.

Third, make sure that Windows isn't managing your page file. You need to manually set this, and an acceptable value is 4000 MB for Min and Max. You will definitely need more HDD space at this point.

RB-CCE will give supurb results, and it is worth the effort to get the other things right.

Yes, I have tried other transcoders. Actually, before DVD-RB I used to manualy do what it is doing using videohelp.com's bitrate calculator w/ TMPGenc and IFOEdit to edit the transcoded video back in. I have a pretty good general knowledge of mpeg encoding.
As for my hardrive space, im sorry I should have worded it better. By my "working" drive, I meant that the files created by DVD-RB, not including the original VOB files I ripped prior to another hardrive, had about 10gb to work with. I realize I should still have more avaliable on that drive, but thats what I have to work with at this moment. But 10gigs should be sufficient, as the CCE transcoded files should take 4gigs at the most, since it does not transcode menus and what not, because of this I believe the CCE files usualy run at around 3.5gigs - 4gigs. After that the final reconstruction comes to about 4.3 gigs. This is why 10gigs seemed fine to me.
I am 100% with you on the media though. My judjement was bad there, I will probably never get Memorex again. Im going to go get some Ritek right now actually heh.
And yes, I manage my own swap file, mainly because the way windows manages it.. it interferes with the photoshop swap file. So to keep the two playin nicely, I separate them onto separate drives and manage their usage. Thanks for the help.

The average size of a RB/CCE encode is about 4.32 gigs but you also have to include another 3 gigs or more for the resulting D2VAVS files. Then there's your original movie which could be 4.3 to over 8 gigs but lets say 5 gigs. that's 5 plus 7.5 which totals to over 12 gigs to do a single encode.
