HKT3020...because of the way the CCE engine works, quality losses are directly related to the size of the screen you are using to view the video...and these losses are likely to be clarity of images, rather than the appearance of major artifacts or macroblocking. As a rule of thumb, I would say that 50% compression with 2 passes with the default disc size is fine for screens up to 54 inches.

On another note, your choice of HP branded media will likely give you a problem...as it is made by someone else...and probably the lowest bidder. You will need to go online to get good, consistent media. A lot of folks use Ritek and Ridata, but even that shows problems at times. There is plenty of info about media in other parts of the AD forum, and I would suggest you check it out.

Well it turns out that HP-DVDRs are detected as CMC discs, they rank 4th in terms of success rates. So far out of my 50-pack I have yet to burn a coaster. Also managed to find a great deal on newegg for Ritek (8X) DVD+Rs, 50-pack for $36 isn't so bad. As I mentioned before what is the maximum a DVDR can go, because after transcoding I notice some space on the outer edge of the disc is not being used. But before I go making adjustments, around how much space will I be gaining by utilizing the discs full capacity?

HKT3020...how much further...I don't know. I suppose you could start out by halving what is there, and then again, and continue on ad infinitum, and in theory you would never reach the edge.

Seriously, if you want to go beyond the default, there is more to lose than gain. I do know that just about every coaster I've ever made was the result of freezing at the end of the burn...and so I have it in my mind that the media strata isn't always that consistent, and is problematic near the edges. And, I've never used anything but Ritek or Ridata. There is also the fingerprint factor, even if you handle the disc on edges.

I'm not sure where you're getting your rankings from but CMC manufactured discs are the disc's to avoid and that goes for CD-R as well. If you want to create a coaster collection then just keep using them.

You can buy exdellent quality media for under $.40 each just follow the link.

A little more on multi passes. No matter how many passes you use the final size of the DVD is going to be about the same. A movie is made up of slow and fast moving scenes, slow scenes don't require as high a bit rate as actions scenes do. A higher bit rate uses up more space than a lower bit rate does. The more passes that CCE SP makes the better it is able to assign bit rates as it is needed to slower and faster scenes. By using a lower bit rate in the slower scenes it is able to spread that saved space to the faster scenes. By making better use of available storage, it results in a better overall picture quality. Too many passes however is just a waste of time because you are in the process of taking a file and Shrinking it and something has to be taken from somewhere. If it was me and I was doing a large 50% movie I'd probably use 4 passes at the most.

Much appreciated for the link to newegg, great deal there and I'm sure after some users come across this they'll thank you as well.
As for my media rankings, a thread in the DVD-R media section listed this link which was how I ranked CMC.

    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

And let me see if I'm getting this right, if too many passes are done it will result in a quality loss?

CMC was rated fourth class which is the lowest. The disc at newegg are labeled Ridata which is a Ritek label but they're actually made by RICOHJPN. I've burned about 130 of then and not one coaster. Keep an eye out, last week newegg had the same media for $36.00 and a $10 rebate.

HKT3020...I went to the media link you provided, and the CMC media wasn't ranked 4th, but 4th Class...the lowest category. Under the title of 4th Class Media it stated "Pathetic Garbage Media landfill material, about 0 to 50% success rate." I think Sophocles made a good point about starting a good coaster collection.

Concerning CCE and the number of passes, once you start using it you will likely experience that 2 or 3 passes is all you will want. While it is conceivable that more passes might remove more data, this won't be visually noticable. Like anything with adjustments, you eventually need to find out what suits you. IMO, when you get into discussions involving more than 3 passes for our app, it becomes little more than conceptual hair-splitting.

Actually someone should have done the math on the number HKT3020 gave. What he wanted was actually about what default comes in at, if not a tad larger. But it isn't dangerously close to 4.37GB. His figure when converted is 4.316GB. I get files from 4.2 to 4.3GB. The program does an excellent job of sizing and the minute amount of space left, I consider a good safety zone. So, I'd advise not to mess with a good thing. Plus the custom settings don't always work. I was getting seriously undersized files once and inserting a file size in settings had no effect there. A clean install got things working right on default again.

If he sets it to the numbers he posted he won't be able to burn it because he'd be using an already converted measure. If his file comes in and measures at the size he was asking about it'd be a wasted encode.

Just to set the record straight, HP doesn't always sell cheap media. They sell the Mitsubishi DVD+R MCC 003 8X media and DVD+R MCC 002 4X media . MCC is at the top of the heap as far as manufacturers go. Maybe someone got CMC and MCC mixed up there. I didn't see a -R offering. They have a +RW but I'm not sure of the manufacturer on that one.

Could you follow the link I'm posting and download a copy of DVDinfo Pro and then use it to ID your HP discs. It'll give you the manufacturers info so that there is no doubt as to who made it. If brobear is right and its ID'd as a Mitsubishi product then it's good media. BTW I'd still go to newegg and purchase the Ridata I recommended, on my machine its out performed my MCC 002 Mits media.

I figured the question was how can I set the output file to 4420MB for the file to be burned?

    Sophocles answered accordingly.
Which I couldn't quite understand. 4420MB = 4.316GB which is right at the bottom figure Sophocles gave for his default size files. No way was 4.316GB too large to burn on a 4.7 disc. I didn't see the issue on this as what was being asked to be set was already near the default setting and should be left alone. If anything, the default size might come in just a bit larger than the size requested. Appears to be an oversight on conversion factors here.

    Sophocles
Call me dumb but that one left me sort of confused. HKT3020+ asked for a file size of 4420MB. I commented that was near 4.316GB which is near the low side of the default size and would easily burn. I thought he should leave it alone. Where did I go wrong?

By the way, the comment on the Mitsubishi media sold by HP came from a recent database entry that appears to be reliable. Unless changed recently those are some of the offerings. What's a DOH!!! ? :)

I double posted, DOH!. I wasn't doubting your media info but I was curious as to how he ID'd the media as CMC. Hmm! Shouldn't Bears be hibernating about now?

You got that right. However, so many bears appeared in my den I felt threatened and took off for a while. :) lol

    @ Sophocles...

I had downloaded and installed DVD Identifier which was how I came to the result of CMC media. Check my previous post, one of the replies was to avoid "Pathetic Garbage Media landfill material, about 0 to 50% success rate." Also glad to see this thread alive again.

It seem as though the thread had stalled for a while. It probably doesn't have much time left. If the previous thread is and indicator of when it will be closed, then it has about 180 posts for that happens.

The request was more for brobear than me. He's quite knowledgeable about different media types and this might be information that he can use to update his personal nfo.

brobear I guess CMC it is.

I noticed there was an update for DVD-RB and it has now reached v0.67. My question is what has changed from v0.66a, the reason I'm asking this is because the changelog hasn't been updated.

    ????

It has been updated -- up until the changes implemented in v0.67 on November 7th. The newest version (0.68) has also been sent to VIP members with an update as of 5 December 2004.
