will defragging the harddrive actually work? isn't this a software related problem though?

Tho usually it's in the setup when mistakes occur, not in the software unless you're using trial versions of CCE, not defraggin' could very well cause problems, especially if you haven't done it in a while. I believe I'd try what sophocles suggested. Besides, even if it doesn't clear up the problem it's something that needs to be done on a regular basis.

    Fullasoul,
Your problem sounds like a setup problem with AVIsynth and, or the decoder.
You might delete your setup and use the installer.
It is super simple to use.

If you wish to learn the manual setup then start from scratch and follow the guide precisely without changing things around. You can play later.

When you're ripping and deleting files that average greater than 5 gigs, your hard disk is going to be severly fragmented if you don't atttend to it. P

probelms with backing up DVD's aren't always software related problems. I'd also check my DMA settings for all my drives. A buffer overflow is caused by data transmission overload if you will, something in your hardware setup is being outpaced.

No mention was made of the version of RB being used. v73 posed a problem and was quickly replaced by 74. Most times a clean install, correctly, will repair most problems. Trials have been something of a problem because beginners don't understand the installation variations and problems. (Even with the warning, some don't realize the Basic trial won't work because of the time restriction.) Beginners should use the installer available at http://www.dvdrebuilder.com , unless they're good at following precise instructions.

There was a time when I received numerous runtime errors (They're generally related to Visual Basic) and yes it could be a version of RB or another software app.

I've found that process of elimination to be very helpful in such situations. brobears suggestion is a valid one.
RB is evolving so fast that sometimes a bug gets overlooked.

There are so many causes for this error that it can be very difficult to pin down.

Have you installed any new software recently?

Were you using OPV and version 0.73? If so, switch quickly to v0.74...

[Note] Where did the "offensive text report" come from the first time I posted this? I certainly didn't add it.

    alright....just about to give up....

I've reinstalled, going step-by-step through Vurbal's guide...I still have the same problem :( At the end of the "Prepare" phase, the status window tells me:

    Space for video: 810,020 KB
    HIGH/LOW/AVERAGE: 1,240/703/622

    :(

    1. It was never normal.

    2. Probably.

    3. I doubt it has anything to do with the version of CCE unless you are using the CCE Basic Trial.

If you are getting undersized it is because you aren't configured properly. Maybe I missed this somewhere -- but have you tried playing back the AVS files with Windows Media Player to see if you are actually encoding the source?

well the first time through, I ignored the low bitrate messages in the status bar (thinking maybe I was reading them wrong) and went ahead and let Phase II run. I wound up with exactly what it said it was going to give me....my 7.6gb DVD turned into a 900mb-ish rendition of such. I obviously didn't burn it, but I did play back the m2v's and they were indeed horribly-encoded renditions (because of the bitrate of course....not the fault of CCE or DVD-RB) of the originals....

    I don't get it....

Whoa! Those are way too many passes, should you get it to work you don't want it to end up taking 8-9 hours. Fullasoul, if you want PM me...I think I have a solution. ;-)

well...the passes are obviously not to do with the problem....I work with video for a living, and whether you choose to believe it or not, I can see a clear difference between 3-pass and 9-pass....more so on material that's not yet been compressed, but still even on already-compressed material (which is what we're dealing with here)....

Try setting ReduceOpt=0 and see what impact that has.

That is one messed up and overdone configuration settings file. You can save your current configuration settings as a backup just in case. Copy the one I supply here into your configuration settings file to replace the one there. You said you had a trial of 2.70 SP. If so your setup didn't reflect it properly. I put in the paths you supplied. If you set your paths correctly, then this configuration should work. This will record a movie with only the English soundtrack and titles. Try it with these basic settings before trying to tweak the setup.

[bold](Edited to read for SP Retail) This is for CCE SP. Recheck to make sure your Paths are correct. Do not enter the additional paths you currently have besides the ones I listed. If any additional paths are in the setup, delete them for now.[/bold]

It seems like you want to run before you walk.
If you stay basic on the setup the missing piece should be apparent. But it if your running low on patience then just use the installer. Then you can learn the as you go when making changes.
