I uninstalled the NVIDIA nforce IDE controller, as suggested. Had to reboot twice because Windows asked for it. The baloons said the install went okay. But I still can't write to a DVD. Any suggestions? Another thing... But now in Divice Manager, I have three items under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers: Primary IDE Channel Secondary IDE Channel Stamdard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controler All of which claim to be "working properly". How come I have three of them now? What do they do anyway? ----------error log: Nehmo Sergheyev Vapor 1A20-...* Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: File 'Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=4.71 (0001), size=45056 bytes, created 8/14/2002 4:03:36 PM ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 10/26/2004 5:35:34 PM Nero Version: 6.6.0.8 (Nero Express) Recorder: <TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B>Version: TS10 - HA 0 TA 0 - 6.6.0.8 Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 0 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI CD-ROM: <Generic DVD-ROM >Version: 1.0 - HA 2 TA 0 - 6.6.0.8 Adapter driver: <dd347prt> HA 2 === Scsi-Device-Map === CdRomPeripheral : TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On DiskPeripheral : WDC WD1600JB-00GVA0 atapi Port 0 ID 1 DMA: On DiskPeripheral : ST3120026A atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On DiskPeripheral : WDC WD800JB-00ETA0 atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: On CdRomPeripheral : Generic DVD-ROM 1.0 dd347prt Port 2 ID 0 DMA: Off CdRomPeripheral : AXV CD/DVD-ROM 2.2a xmasscsi Port 3 ID 0 DMA: Off === CDRom-Device-Map === TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552 D: CDRom0 Generic DVD-ROM F: CDRom1 AXV CD/DVD-ROM G: CDRom2 ======================= AutoRun : 1 Excluded drive IDs: WriteBufferSize: 83886080 (0) Byte ShowDrvBufStat : 0 BUFE : 0 Physical memory : 1535MB (1572336kB) Free physical memory: 926MB (948280kB) Memory in use : 39 % Uncached PFiles: 0x0 Use Inquiry : 1 Global Bus Type: default (0) Check supported media : Disabled (0) 18.10.2005 ISO compilation 4:57:08 AM #1 Text 0 File Isodoc.cpp, Line 6172 Iso document burn settings ------------------------------------------ Determine maximum speed : FALSE Simulate : FALSE Write : TRUE Finalize CD : FALSE Multisession : TRUE Multisession type: : Start multisession Burning mode : DAO Mode : 1 ISO Level : 1 (Max. of 11 = 8 + 3 char) Character set : ISO 9660 Joliet : TRUE Allow pathdepth more than 8 directories : TRUE Allow more than 255 characters in path : TRUE Write ISO9660 ;1 file extensions : TRUE 4:57:09 AM #2 Text 0 File Reader.cpp, Line 127 Reader running 4:57:09 AM #3 Text 0 File Writer.cpp, Line 122 Writer TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B running 4:57:09 AM #4 ISO9660GEN -11 File geniso.cpp, Line 3293 First writeable address = 0 (0x00000000) 4:57:10 AM #5 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 3153 Turn on Disc-At-Once, using DVD media 4:57:10 AM #6 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 259 Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB) Last address to be written: 639199 (142:02.49, 1248MB) 4:57:10 AM #7 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 271 Write in overburning mode: NO (enabled: CD) 4:57:10 AM #8 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 2316 Recorder: TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B, Media type: DVD+R Disc Manufacturer ID: MCC, Media Type ID: 004, Product revision number: 0 Disc Application Code: 0, Extended Information Indicators: 7 4:57:10 AM #9 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 433 >>> Protocol of DlgWaitCD activities: <<< ========================================= 4:57:10 AM #10 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 830 Setup items (after recorder preparation) 0: TRM_DATA_MODE1 () 2 indices, index0 (150) not provided original disc pos #0 + 639200 (639200) = #639200/142:2.50 relocatable, disc pos for caching/writing not required/ required, no patch infos -> TRM_DATA_MODE1, 2048, config 0, wanted index0 0 blocks, length 639200 blocks [TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B] -------------------------------------------------------------- 4:57:12 AM #11 Text 0 File ThreadedTransferInterface.cpp, Line 1043 Prepare recorder [TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B] for write in CUE-sheet-DAO DAO infos: ========== MCN: "" TOCType: 0x00; the only thing that's now incorrect is the burn speed, slow it right down to say 4x. instead of (possibly) wasting more discs, just before you hit 'burn', click on 'simulation burn' - it'll go thru the motions opf a burn with a blank disc but won't write to the disc...
@creaky Before: After: [bold]CdRomPeripheral : TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On [/bold] Should this change from 'nvidesm' to 'atapi' ?
Hi there, This is normal, since you have removed the nVidia drivers and using the Windows Generic drivers. I noticed DMA says ON now ! Just keep burning at 4x, man asking for 16x is way over kill, and asking for problems. My 2 cents...
@cougar_ii #1 So when nehmo said that he uninstalled the controller, that uninstalls the existing nvidia drivers? #2 Or is it that the nvidia drivers are still onboard, but when XP detects a new controller it automatically installs it's own drivers? If #2 is the case, what sequence of steps would you take to re-install the nvidia drivers?
I suspect the NVIDIA controler(s) is the preferable one(s). I did find the CD that came with the m'board, and I think it's the one with the NVIDIA stuff on it. I haven't put it in yet. I used to burn a 16x. It seems I should be able to do that again. I'm going to try at 4x to see what happens. Incidentally, the usually stable machine just crashed. It's back up but the reboot was a little out of order: the wallpaper showed briefly _before_ the loading your personal settings. Anyway, it seems to be working okay now. I take that back. I put the CD in and I'm getting a warning aroub Autoloader.A . Of course, I used this CD before - when I got the m-board. I'm doing a virus scan. Sending this now. See you on the other side.
SIGuardian, a disk monitoring program, is reporting T.E.C. (Threshold Exceeds Condition, particularlly in the Seek Error Rate, of the system/boot drive, or C drive. Actually, perhaps a hint to this, high temperature of the HD (but oddly, all three of the HDs), is what made me want to fix the DVD writing ability. I wanted to back things up. But now, given that SIGuardian gives a fail date only two days away, I'm going to devote my attention to cloneing the C drive to H, a 160 GB drive that I now just keep movies on. As I just posted, I just had a small problem with a trojen, but I belive that's solved now. I haven't re-installed the NVIDIA controlers yet.
I still haven't gotten the burner to work, that is, it will do CDs but not DVDs. I tried using 4x instead of 16x, and it still doesn't work. It truns out the malware warning I got from MS Antispyware was incorrect. I also determined the SiGuardian warning was irrelevant and probably incorrect. So other than the DVD burner not being able to burn DVDs, my system is okay. I’m going to post a fresh Nero error log in a new thread.
just paste the new log here, it's best to keep the problem contained to one thread until completion. spreading the problem across threads makes it longer to fix the problem and makes it harder for ppl to help you

Nah, i never leave a Nero log unturned - not too bad, 6.6.0.16 is latest 6.x version - you've got the Nvidia drivers on there again, do whatever you did before, further up the thread to get DMA to be ON again... - see previous comment - ditto, hopefully we'll see thr ATAPI drivers show up in this section too
Previously, I uninstalled the drivers, and the Windows XP ones took over. The DMA went on, but the burner still didn't write. So you're saying I should try that again? What would make it successful the second time around? Would there be something else to adjust once the Windows drivers are back in?
if you go back thru the thread (i had to do that to refresh my memory) we got as far as getting rid of those pesky nvidia drivers, we had atapi drivers in there place then the last input i had was trying to get you to go 4x instead of 16x..... i think you'll need to do that again to make progress...
Well, I'm going to try it again. But for some time, *with* those Nvidia drivers, everything worked. I also just got the latest version of Nero. I'm going to install that.
I installed the new Nero 7 Ultra Edition. It's actually several apps, and I'm pleased with it. It replaces a slew of auxiliary programs like file converters, etc. Everybody must get it. I didn’t change the NVIDIA drivers, and I just tried the new Nero with the old arrangement. Everything worked, and I’ve already successfully burned three DVDs. Looking at the log, I noticed DMA is still off, but it doesn’t seem to matter now. Thanks, everybody, and particularly Creaky. It was actually that comment about my version 6 being old that made me upgrade.
