Here's my problem: I've got a Samsung 16x write-master DVD burner and it works fairly well; however, when I burn with Ritek 8x DVD's, I sometimes get some trouble. 4x seems fine, but at 8x it puts another ring on the bottom of the DVD: you know, how there is that little ring on the DVD that shows how much is burnt? There is another one, sometimes two, sometimes close to the original ring, sometimes further away. The extra rings are usually lighter, too, and I was wondering if this is supposed to happen?

    thanks.

It may be due to change in speed while burning.Normally the discs should play fine without any playback issues.Just have a look on that link,

Other burners also do make rings sometimes but it's not often. If they play fine then you don't need to worry. You can try to burn with other medias, like Ty or Verb for example and see how it is,but normally Ritek is not that kind of bad.

Ah, according to that thread, there seems to be nothing to worry about. Thanks for the help.

One more thing: I have these 8x Maxdata DVDs as well as my 8x Ritek DVD's; the Ritek's burn at both 4x and 8x - as they're supposed to - but the Maxdatas only let me burn at 4x, and not at as they should.

Could this be because of my Samsung Burner? My friend has a Lite-on burner that is older than mine, and his can burn the Maxdatas at 8x.

It could be your firmware which needs an update.Or another possibility is,i don't know much about Maxdata medias because i don't have any experience nor do i know people who use them, but i can definitely say that between the Ritek and the maxdata, the Ritek is the most commonly used, maybe the another one is not so good media, which can possibly explain the reason why it can't be burned at the rated speed but the Ritek can.As for your friend, don't take it bad but i think his drive has a better advantage over yours. It's what i've learned from different posts here in AD,Lite-on is quite a very good drive. But don't think your samsung is the worst, maybe it just needs a firmware upgrade so that it can support greater burning speed capability for some other medias or it's just the Maxdata which is a bit crapy on your drive.

Okay. I've updated the firmware, but I have nothing to burn right now; so, I'll have to wait and see if it makes any difference.

I got my model of Samsung over the Lite-on because, from what several shops and computer technicians told me, it is a way better DVD burner than Lite-on-- but who knows.

    thanks for the help.
