What media did you use to record your movies onto? If you used some poor quality media, and with a picky driver(reader) you might get that problem. What I would try is use DVD Decrypter in ISO read mode, copy the movie to your DVD and then ISO write mode and burn (or you can use Nero Burning Rom to burn).
Does your internal drive recognize original DVDs?

Thanks for such a quick reply.

I've been using the same media as before when everything worked (Sony and Maxell). My drive (CD-ROM/DVD) works fine - burns CDs, plays DVDs without problems. I can also transfer files (drag and drop) off any media onto my HD. Since I posted my message last night, where I mention that Nero Recode works fine with my external drive, I saw this message on another forum:

recieved a email from Nero today, it says its from the supervisor in charge of bug or error reporting. It says
1.there is a ongoing issue with the latest version of Nero recode that it will only reconise one drive or burner .So you have to put source dvd in the burner, copy the files ,then burn in the same drive. So burn at once will not work. Some times there solution works and some times it does not.

Has anyone heard of this problem?

I only have Nero 6, but I did update (to the latest, Nero 6 Reload - which for Recode means version 2.2.6.17). Has anyone updated Nero 6 and still been able to use multiple drives?? (If DVD Shrink works for DaddyBig, it really does sound like a problem with Nero...)

    Thanks.

I had the exact same problem with Nero recode when I put together a friends system. Certain versions dont like to read from or write to certain drives, his DVD-ROM wouldn't work with it, but when he switched to a different burner most his problems went away.

I solved my original problem by just replacing the drive. I got a new pioneer 16x dual layer drive and now I don't have the problem. Thanx

    Hi,

Well, I wasn't able to get Nero to work with both my DVD drives (only works with the external), so I installed DVDshrink to rip from the internal drive, then I use Nero to burn to the external. Seems to be a workable solution, though it is annoying that Nero stopped doing what it is supposed to do.

I either have the same problem or a simular problem. I am a long time user of Nero recode and have used Nero Recode 100s of times successfully since it was first released.

Problem: Nero Recode2 (2.2.7.6) will not recode DVDs made with either of my two stand alone DVD video recorders. During Nero's recoding stage\phase I receive the following error "failed to read from the file %s" as others here have reported.

    Observations\notes:

    - The DVDs that fail for me are all created with SA DVD recorders (ie recording TV, Home Videos)
    - Nero Burning Rom can make backup copies\images of these DVD discs that work without error.
    - I can still use Nero Recode to make backup copies of copy protected movies when I first use other software to remove protection (ie DVDdecrypter).
    - Nero Recode produces the same error when attempting to convert to Nero Digital (MP4).
    - Repro's with DVD images that have been mounted. Images are of DVDs made with SA Recorder.
    - Error occurs when recoding to disk image or HDD folder.
    - I have no problems playing these DVDs on any DVD player or computer.
    - Repro's 100% of the time on all DVDs made from my SA DVD recorders.
    - I have never seen this error with pre-recorded DVDs (ie DVD-Video)
    - No error using Nero Recode2 (2.2.6.9) from Nero6 on another computer.

My goal is to covert some of my home videos to Nereo Digital (MP4).
