I got a Compaq Presario 2.9Ghz Intel about a year old. Lately my fan has been running more often than in the past. In the past it barely ran. Now it runs whenerver I run a program. Is it something I should be concerned with? Also I noticed startup time is way longer than usual and my CPU processing is 100% for a while almost as if it's frozen, and then finally the programs will load. I ran a virus and spyware check and all is normal. No unusal start-up programs when I ran Start-up Inspector. My computer is definitely not running normal. But I don't know what else to do.

Have you tried defragging the HD? Tried cleaning the registry? Did you try opening the case and cleaning out the fur balls? (grin).

Might help. I can think of these basic items. More technical would be by me.

Thanks. I will try all three right now. Didn't think about doing that and it makes a lot of sense. I will let you know.

Definatly give it a good clean as this could definatly be a cause.
How long has it been since a good ol defrag? Also maybe you could try running a benchmark tool to so if you can still strain your Cpu like you should be able to if it has not been Overclocked.

My money is on a dirty heatsink.....CPU is heating up and the fan is trying to keep up. Get a few cans of duster and go to town.

The problem turned out to be a dirty heatsink. I cleaned it. And while I wast at it, I defragged my hard drive because it was over due. And I downloaded those programs I got from ddp and discovered some spyware that my program overlooked.
Now my computer startup time is cut in half. When I run a program, my CPU barely goes past 40% and the fan hasn't came on since I turned on the computer 2 hours ago. It is so quiet now.
    Thanks.
