Here is one definition of firmware. Software (programs or data) that has been written onto read-only memory (ROM). Firmware is a combination of software and hardware. ROMs, PROMs and EPROMs that have data or programs recorded on them are firmware. Firmware is what tells your dvdrw how to write to different medias (kindof like instructions) and is updated to accomidate new medias as they become available on the market. That is why you need to keep your f/w current. Forget I said anything about the crossflash, for the time being anyway. You need to be familiar with f/w before doing any crossflashing. The current f/w for your drive is BSOS. Mort
Ok, thanks. I'm familiar with what firmware is. I just drew a blank when you displayed it as f/w. (duh) I've read where so many have had nightmare issues when they upgraded or flashed their f/w. And LiteOn's site says to NOT do it, unless you're having problems. So, I think I'll wait on that, until I really need to do it. But thanks anyway, for the info.
While we are on the subject................. I read you're supposed to set the booktype on a +R, before you burn it, and a +RW, after you burn it. Well, can I set booktype on a +R, on my computer, and take the disc to my parent's house and burn it on their standalone Gateway burner? Or can I burn a +RW on their standalone, and bring it home to booktype it? On the +RW, do you booktype it before you "Finalize", or after? I need to learn this booktyping stuff! The stuff I've read about it, doesn't answer these questions. If you have a link to a page that does answer these, I'd appreciate it. Thanks again........... I ask this because my stepfather transferred some home movies to vhs a few years ago. Now he has burned them to dvds. He made me copies. When I got home, and put them in my player, they didn't work. My player will play +R discs. Didn't work in computer either. He's using good Verbatim discs, so I don't think they are the problem. I gave him some different Verbatim to try, and they did the same thing. I thought the booktyping might help eliminate the problem. I checked today, and his burner does not booktype. What do you think?
@JVC Here is an article I have on bitsetting/booktyping do not know how much it will help you. http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
Thanks for the link. I have bookmarked it, so I can refer to it later. I guess it basically answered my questions (no, I can't do what I was asking). I see you answered my post while I was editing it. Did you read the extra stuff I added? Any ideas on the problem? Thanks...........
I wish I could help you in this area, any VHS tapes I have edited from camcorder or home videos has been done on my DVD Recorder not my PC. Did these DVD's play on your stepfathers player?
Yes. They played fine on his. When I put them in mine, it said "Reading", and when it should have gone to play, the strip at the top showed a little white square, and said "Stop". It was as if I had hit the stop button, but I had not. Did the ones you made from vhs, work in other players?
Yes, but as I said this was a Panasonic DVD Recorder not a PC. Maybe it was the software that was used, autoplay might not been enabled.
While looking all around the web for some assistance with my problem on firmware and bookmarking that no one has addressed, I came across a discussion about making sure that the unit is set to DMA in device manager, which got me to thinking. Is it manditory that that the burner be connected to an ide channel? I have mine connected via USB 2.0 using a Bytecc external housing. Burning and data transfer have not been a problem up until now, but I am worried about any other future problems that I cannot find help with.
@JVC It has to be the format that created the disk that is the problem, when you put it in your PC does it read the files on the disk show you what format they are in?
