I was under the impression that once the new dual-layer dvd-rw's came out their firmwares were going to be altered for use on earlier DVD-RWs, allowing some of these drives to burn dual-layer dvd-r's. Anyone know if good, hacked firmware's have been made, and/or where to find information on this? I'm particularly interested in my NEC ND-1300a, which is apparently very similar to their new drives in terms of hardware (except for being slower). Anyone have thoughts or information on this?

I wouldn't hold my breath because there are no good SL to DL hacks. There was a 2500 to 2510 firmware but it only worked some of the time and trashed more than a few drives. Would you want to trust a $10 DL blank to an untested hacked firmware in a drive that wasn't optimized for DL burning? I wouldn't.

The new crop of DL burners are silly cheap right now so there's very little reason not to invest in a drive that was designed for DL burning :)

wow, i hadn't checked prices for DVD+-RW drives, NEC's new ND-3500A is like $70. When I got my drive it was >$150. I guess the only thing to wait for now is cheaper media. At $10 each the $/gb value is pretty poor.
Anyway thanks for the update, now i just have to find $70 for that new drive =)

It's amazing how inexpensive they are isn't it?

You're absolutely right, the GB/price value is pretty poor. That's why I won't be dipping my toes into DL burning until the media prices don't make me wince :)
