First build, need to know all the parts I'll need, already over budget.

Don't bother with Alienware, once you home-build, you'll never go back to store bought. The customisability, and even quality are unrivalled, if you buy the right parts.

Yeah, but bragging about having an Alienware will be fun. May get a tablet one day, but otherwise, it's building all the way.

12.5" is vast. The HD5750 is only 9" long, if that.

Whats to brag about? There just a high priced Dell with a cool looking case. Literally, there owned and operated by Dell. You can buy cases that do rival these cases if you have the money. Not to mention your PC will have higher quality parts that are less likley to fail. And in the end your custom builds likley to be cheaper or atleast offer more bang for the buck.

    For example:
    http://www.alienware.com/microsite/m11x/m11x.aspx
    The low end Alienware.
CPU: My 860 beats the 720 in almost every benchmark. 860s cheaper after memory and mobo costs last time i checked.
GPU: My 4890 is $10 cheaper then a 260 and out performs it.
RAM: It has 3 GB. Mine has 4 GB, and probably higher quality RAM to.
HDD: Alineware has 500 GB. I have a 1 TB as my primary storage drive.

Compare that to the second rig as well. Except factor in my RAID 0 SSDs for my OS drives, and it still out performs it aside from video card gpu power.

Comparing a desktop PC to a laptop on price isn't strictly fair...

True. The smaller components used in laptops are naturally more expensive.
