Wow it's hard to become motivated to watch Forrest Gump yet again. So, if I have skips/freezes on this player too, then that means I need to buy a desktop if I want to burn DVDs? I wish I realized how vital that is before spending $1200 on this laptop. However, I can just see buying yet another computer and the issue still will exist. LOL I have put way too much time, energy, and money into this to still not have any success. :-( Alright, on to watch Forrest Gump, again.
(Can't remember if i wrote this earlier in the thread or not) but an easier way to see if a disk is going to skip, is to CRC scan it ie check for corruption. Use Nero cd-dvd speed, if you don't have it, try here - http://www.cdspeed2000.com/download.html The quickest screenie of this is a foreign one here - but all green is good, red is corruption if a disk skips, and a CRC scan picks it up, the skipping is present on the disc. If no bad sectors are found, then the skipping is due to the dvd player as there's no corruption on the disc..
Creaky, which tab am I on when I run this test? I started one that doesnt look at all like what you did, as it made a line graph instead. Please tell me which tab to be on and then which drop down menu to select from. Thanks!
I figured out the test. So, if I get 100% good, then it is definitely an issue with my player and nothing else? If that is the case, perhaps I should not have thrown away those 100+ DVDs that weren't working. If it is 100% and there are issues with one or more players, there is nothing I can do to make the burn any better for those players to read the discs? That's pretty misleading if DVD player models advertise they can play DVD-R discs, if they skip while playing some.
OK, so I reached 100% good on 3 different drives, 2 internal and 1 external. With this being said, the player skips at the same place every time. However, the other player does not skip at that part. I don't understand how this can happen if the discs are 100%. Does this mean that if I took discs from people who claim to have never had issues and played them in my player, there would likely be skipping with those as well? It appears the next logical step would be to buy a new DVD player. However, it will suck if I have to keep going through a bunch of different players before finding one that never has issues playing discs. Also, at this point is it certain that there is nothing wrong with these discs and they are as good as I can get with a burned single layer disc? What other ideas does anyone have?
Sorry, had to go on an errand.. The problems you're having in this thread are enough to put you off movies for life, i'll bet I can't speak for everyone out there but any time i've had skipping disks the disks have had errors on a CRC scan. Think of it like the floppy disks of old, you'd get that god-awful scraping noise when there was some problem reading the disk, and at some point you'd get the dreaded CRC error or a similar error. If you're getting disks that pass the scan, that would normally be good enough for me. Another sanity check is always to play movies thru (though in your case this obviously has to be ruled out, for now anyway). The only other test i can think of is to copy the data off a suspect disk, if it's a backup of something then you can just use basic Windows Explorer to copy/paste the movie files to your hard drive, or just one of the ripping programs. If any of these re-copying processes works it's pretty much conclusive that the actual 'data' ie the movie is intact. So... i'm afraid other than that, the finger of blame would have to still keep pointing to a dvd player or two..
and you have the most up to date firmware for the drive/burner right? you need that to support the 16x media. you might try Taiyo Yuden or Sony media next time. edit: after reading your last post yes it time for a new DVD player , when you buy one take your backups with you to the store and make sure they playback fine before buying it
I thought I had issues with enough players to eliminate players as being the issue. I had an older Toshiba, an internal laptop player, then bought a new Toshiba, and later tried a PS2. The burner always played the movies fine however. I know there are some threads on the site about good DVD players. Do you have any suggestions of companies to try? Sony, Samsung, and Phillips are ones I hear good things about.
for playing back about anything Phillips is your best bet, you can pickup a good one for under 50 bucks
I downloaded updated firmware from the Plextor site but it said that the firmware on the site is older than the one currently installed with the burner so I did not use the firmware on the site. The tip of bringing the disc to the store is a great idea!
One more thing, just in case this matters. I can burn a DVD and it will freeze/skip in the exact same spot every time I play it. Let's say at 1 hour 20 minutes. I can try reburning it, and this time it might freeze/skip at 6 minutes every time I play that disc. If there are no issues with the rip/encode/burn process, why would there be issues at different times each time it is burned? I am still all for buying a new Phillips DVD player. I just wanted to bring this question up in case this information makes any difference.
that could be a media problem and or a DVD Player causing the playback problem , its hard to pin point. i would rule out its a software problem. keep it mind burning DVDs is a different process than a factory pressed DVD ,thats where the problems lies when playing them back, your fine the less expensive DVD players have less problems playing back backups than the most expensive DVD players in most cases
So it sounds like buying a Phillips DVD player is still the next step. However, I really don't want to start burning a ton of DVDs again to find out there is something wrong. You would suggest switching from Verbatim to Yaiyo Yuden right away too? I am sure Best Buy will accept an unopened pack of recently purchased DVDRs.
yes Taiyo Yuden are the best, only thing you will have to order them online you can get them at supermediastore.com http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-dvd-r-media.html
Thank you for the link. Before this, the best deal I found was $38.98 for a pack of 100. Now if a new player and media does not resolve this issue, I don't know what to do. LOL
I'm almost 100% positive it will i use the valueline Taiyo Yuden without problems. they run from 23 to 25 cents each depending on the week looks like this week there 25 cents each. there will most likely be a better sale towards the end of the week being the 4th of July
Perhaps I threw away a little money. I bought the 16X even though I will burn them at 8X max. I was thinking this will provide a better chance of success. In the future, do I just buy 8X and burn those at 8X?
OK, I am canceling the original order and put in a new one. Instead of 300 discs for $100 I am going for 600 discs for $150. Even if I need to drop down to 4X, this is an amazing deal for quality media. Now off to Best Buy to get a new player.
