    trend micro does have anti-spyware scanner but you can also go to windows security center and do one there, panda software used to have one but I don't think its available anymore. here is a link to windows http://safety.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm

    @rav009,
    Like many of my friends that use AVG Free I have noticed the possibility of it becoming a pay only program. Is this true? And if so what should we use in its place. btw thanks for your help here and in the P2P protection forum too. lol.

    Hey Greensman :)

    As far as I know, AVG free is free for the life of the product, so the possibility of it turning into shareware is slim, if it DID turn shareware there's always the other AV's in this thread.

    And for the help in the P2P forums, your welcome :)

    @rav009,
    Thanks for the reply. I have received a couple of notices along with the family memebers that use AVG Free that it may not be free after the first of the year. I thought you being the authority on the subject might know something more than a n00b like myself. lol. If it becomes the case I will definitely try one of the few products you recommend. Thanks again for your patience and expert help.

    Another question. You feel that the windows firewall is inadequate for most purposes? I was thinking of going to Comodo per your recommendations. Good idea or not?

    @ddp & rav009,
    Ok I did some reading since ddp gave me the page to look at. lol. Didn't even think about them upgrading/updating to a new version and therefore doing away with the older version and updates for it. Thanks again for the info and expertise.

    Your welcome greensman :)

    BTW, to answer your query on Windows Firewall, it won't do as it only blocks inbound connections and not outbound, however a full software firewall will block both, meaning a much higher level of security.

    Hey,

    Ewido doesn't exist anymore, its AVG anti spyware :)

    AVG antispyware (free) doesnt protect in real time but offers a great on demand scanner, Spyware Blaster protects in real time. So yes, you need the two of them.

    HOSTS file explained (really easy to read)

    well guys, i've been playing around with various firewalls & had some h4ckz0r friends hit me with their best. The one that seems to do the best, has the smallest memory footprint, and is stable is Sygate Firewall v5.6 That is the last legal non-Pro version you can find online. Various torrent sites might find you the Pro version.
    Sadly, Norton discontinued Sygate when they purchased the company...because Norton (firewall) is a PIECE OF SH*T!
    Download it
    Thanks to ireland for pointing everyone @the International Coffee, Tea & Gift Shop thread to sygate. It truly rocks.

    update: I switched to Kerio Personal Firewall v4.2.2 & its even better than Sygate. you can't go wrong with either program. Use a FW, Protowall, the MVPS or Bluetack HOSTS file, and you are def a lot safer online.

    Its excellent protection, there is no need at all to keep ad aware or spybot open permanently, just scan with them once a week and you'll be fine :)

    Thanks for the complements on the guide BTW :-D

    I use AVG free + Comodo/Zone alarm firewall + Spyware Gaurd on all my machines, excluding one (this one) which I run NOD32 + Comodo P/F + Conterspy on.
