I used DVDFabPlatinum and it did the job. I've only viewed it on the computer so I'm not sure what the quality is. I suspect it has lost a bit, could that be right? And it would lose even more when I copy back to DVD? I'd be happy to use AutoGK which generally seems to be considered the best, but I need to get over that Multiple Program Chains problem somehow and I didn't find how to do that, yet. The .AVI file generated by DVDFabPlatinum can't be played by MPC. It seems to think it is playing it but there's no picture and the sound is a lot of sharp tweets like a flock of sparrows or something. Missing CODECS someone has said. How do I go about correcting that? It must have been caused by the installation of a video prog of some kind. Quite a hassle isn't it? You keep downloading and installing in order to fix a a problem and the things that you download install their own CODECS and apparently delete or overwrite others, rendering stuff inoperable. Is that what happens? AGK not playing the MPC was my first and main hassle. Then VOB 5 of the 6 in the main title being unacceptable to various progs was the next. One the grounds they couldn't 'detect the time' of the VOB. DVDFabPlatinum has overcome that. But I'd like to know if there's any VOB fixing software that I could have used to fix that? The VOBMERGE idea seemed good but the file it created seemed to cause Handbrake and AlltoAvi to malfunction. Looks like I can carry on using DVDFabPlatinum and ignore all these problems - if the quality is good enough (not, actually, really very critical considering the source material, mainly garishly coloured kids cartoons - but every once in a while a movie of mine that I'd like to keep the quality as good as possible). But deeper understanding of these probs and fixes for them would be good even if not strictly necessary. regards, ab
Hard to say if it's the best, it certainly is one of the easiest. Seeing as you said you ripped the complete DVD, open it in DVD Shrink and reauthor as 'Movie Only' saving the output uncompressed. Open that IFO in AutoGK and see how it goes.
For many years the only codecs i've installed are via the K-Lite Mega Codec pack. Before that i had to mess about with different codecs. Moved to K-Lite and have never had to touch or care about a codec again.
Yep. that's what I've always done, recent times. that's why I guess it must be prog installs that're leading to these missing codec probs. I'll reinstall klite mega.
Well I reinstalled KLite Mega Codecs and it deleted/replaced: DivX Bundle CoreVorbis Audio Decoder Direct Show Ogg Vorbis Filter Morgan Multimedia Stream Switcher Xvid AC3 Filter Core AVC Directshow Filter which was pretty impressive. But MPC still wouldn't run the .AVI So I took a look in it and found a box for 'avi' unchecked. I checked it and now all's fine. So my original question is all fixed. How to create AVI's from a DVDDecrypt rip on the hard drive? Use DVD Fab Platinum ! And it'll get over problems that stop AutoGK and VobMerge. thanks all.
Glad you have a solution or couple of solutions now. However AutoGK should not be exhibiting so many problems. A few months ago I literally re-ripped many hundreds of my DVD's and converted them to AVI with AutoGK. For any retail DVD's i use DVDFab to rip followed by Vobblanker (as we all know that DVDFab doesn't produce clean enough rips) and successfully converted with AutoGK. Any previously ripped DVD's were transferred to hard drive via ye olde worlde DVD Decrypter then also successfully AutoGK'd. It sounds like you have a problem caused by ripping and/or maybe you're 'obtaining' Vobs or entire movies from the internet ?. As i say i have used AutoGK to convert large amounts of movies with no issue.
