I have used this to remove garbage from AVI files.

Run Vdubmod and load or drag the AVI

    Video..Full Processing mode
    Video..Filter > Add > (select the Null Transform filter)> OK > Cropping

Adjust so the crop will be even all around > OK > OK.

    Video > Full Processing Mode
    Video > Compression > XVid Mpeg4 > OK

    File > Save as AVI

    VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.2
    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=65889

If you don't have this codec, download and install.
    XVid Codec
    http://www.xvid.org/

If you want an audio codec.
    Lame MP3 codec
    http://www.freecodecs.net/files/lame-3.97.zip

    Install lame codec.

If you don't recompress after modifying, it will be raw video and fill up the drive.
