Hi What an awesome place....and I sure could use some advice.
I have an external dvd burner and have Nero 6 .... would like to
make copy of iceage the meltdown....and have no idea where to begin
If I have Nero what else do I need to be able to make working copy.
Remember I am new but quick learner.
I am trying to get this done for my grandkids.
I've read other threads here but it made more sense to me to have
this topic more personalized so I would know what I was doing.
Thank you to anyone who answers.

Welcome! Here are a few suggestions:

    (1) DVDFab Decrypter (free). Rips the movie to your HDD and handles most of the newer encryptions for newer movies. Find it here: http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

    (2) DVD Shrink or IMGburn (free). Both will write your decrypted movie to DVD. Since you have Nero installed, you can use DVD Shrink in conjunction with Nero or IMGburn by itself. Both can be found under the download section of this website. Here is a good guide for each: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_copy_dvd_with_dvd_shrink.cfm (DVD Shrink)
    http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/burn_dvd_folder_imgburn.cfm (IMGburn)

    (3) AnyDVD from Slysoft (not free, but has a 21 day free trial). This program runs in the background to remove the encryption protection of DVDs, which would allow you to use basic Nero, if you wish. Find it here: http://www.slysoft.com

Hope some of this helps. Any problems, feel free to write back. Good luck!

Edit: Here are more suggestions to help out and keep in mind should you encounter any errors after successfully setting up your method.

Media quality. Use Taiyo Yuden or Verbatims if available as blank media. Sonys are decent also.

Burn speed. Burn at no greater than 1/2 of the rated speed of the media you are using. For example, if you are using 16x media, burn at 8x. Shrink, Nero, and IMGburn will allow you to set your write speed if it needs to be changed.

    hello and welcome to AD,

You can follow this guide either one of these guides

    Guide 1

    Guide 2

If you dont care about the menus than follow Guide 2 exactly

if you do want the menus then use guide 1

Post if you have any questions about the guides

Wow thank you for the detailed replies.
My 2 main questions are -
How much space do these programs need?
    What is an ISO image?
I mean basically I want to rip movie (which has been nicely explained) with what program I'm not sure I guess the DVDFab to my hd
then burn to dvd. Using Nero I'm assuming. If I don't use Nero should I have it installed with all the other programs?
Won't they conflict? It just seems like a lot of programs.
Once movie is copied to dvd sucessfully can I delete the folder movie is in and clean up my pc? I understand it can be fragmeted quit a bit.
After reading it seems that the main movie option is a good choice.
I'm rereading as I'm tedious and cautious as to what I'm doing.
Far what I can tell I need dvdfab and dvdshrink after which I can use nero to burn???
Awesome response time and I really appreciate the help.
Truly a great thread to get some help.

These programs take very little space, maybe a couple of mb. But the movie that is burned to your hdd will be around 7.5 Gbs. Make sure you have enough free room on your hdd. Around 20 Gb or more.

While I cannot give you the technical definition of it, it is simply an image of the disc burned to your hdd as one file.

DVD Shrink is designed to work with Nero, so if you plan on using it, you will need Nero installed. Shrink will not burn by itself. IMGburn will.

Once you have burned your movie to DVD, and have checked to make sure it is working, then yes, you may delete the files. Just make sure to keep tabs on which folder your files are written to.

Yes....but Shrink will automatically use Nero if it is installed. Shrink is a program that allows you to compress the 7 Gb movie file on your HDD to fit onto a regular DVD5 (4.7Gb) disc. Nero is needed to actually write the compressed movie to disc.

Keep in mind, this is just one method of backing up a DVD. There are several out there. Mainly comes down to personal preference. Other successful methods are discussed on these forums daily by other members.

Three points to make your life easier...use good media ie taiyo yuden or verbatim, if using nero 6 visit the nero site and update to 66016, and thirdly, dont burn to the full capacity of your disc.4450mb is fine.

The free programs mentioned will not conflict with your Nero.
I just wanted to mention a little detail that often gets over looked.
Once you have burned your DVD and want to delete the file. If you
are using Norton Systemworks, first you empty your recycle bin by
right clicking on the icon. Then you must right click on the Norton
Protected bin and empty the files from there also. Otherwise you
still have those files taking up space on your harddrive. If you have
something in your Norton protected bin that you do not want to delete
you can right click on the icon and of the Unerase Wizard. Then you
can chose only the files of the movie and delete them.

Amazing Thank you to all of you who took the time to reply.
I really do appreciate the help.
I plan on starting today reading the guides yesterday gave me a
    migraine! lol
I'm one of those that believes trial and error usually works best.
Except in this case. The tutorials are top-notch and exactly what I
needed. Step-by-step and pics really help.
Normally I would have someone just show me which is the way I learn quickest. But I believe with all of your helpful suggestions I will be able to accomplish this.
One more question though, when I put the movie into a folder should I make a new one (like a temp) to store it until I burn it?
Does the fragmatation of the hard drive hurt it?
I heard of a program something called cccleaner (I think) is it a good one to run after burning?
I have 2 weeks to get some movies for my older grandkids while we go to the hospital for their brother (3 months old) for his 2nd heart operation. With the patience and guidance from all of you I am more confident now that I will be able to do so.
    Thank you so much

If you defrag before you start doing this you should not have to
run ccleaner. If you are really new to working with a computer,
ccleaner can cause a real mess if it is run incorrectly. The first
time I used it back when, I ended up completely having to uninstall
and reinstall every program on my computer.
I'm one of those that believed in experimenting with new programs too.
CCleaner is not one I recommend experimenting with.
I do backups for my grandkids too. A lot of the Sony ones are the
more difficult ones to do. If you are going to spend money on any
program I would recommend AnyDVD be the one you buy. Then I would
download the free programs DVD Decrypter, Shrink, Imgburn, and Rip
It4Me. I also have FixVTS which is part of RipIt4Me. I downloaded
it separately because sometimes I use it with other programs. All of
those programs can be on your computer with Nero without conflicts.
In my opinion Imgburn is much simpler to use than Nero.
Good luck. Those movie backups you do should be a real help at the
hospital. Will say a prayer for your grandson.

Once again thanks for the input....sometimes we make things a little more difficult than they are!
I'm only concerned about space I have 40g hd so I want to make sure that once I finish with one I delete the files and run defrag.
I sincerely appreciate your prayers and thoughts.
They are most welcomed for my little guy.
I'll keep on reading (although too much can be more confusing! lol)
and will you posted, I know with all the great suggestions I'll be able to get those dvds done.
Have a great day to all who read this!

You should not have to defrag everytime you delete a file. I was
only suggesting that you do it before you add all the new software.
I have an 80 gig harddrive. I only have about 20 gig full of
software. By deleting each set of files after I'm done I have not
had to defrag in months. I check it every so often, but it usually
    says I don't need it.
I understand about your grandson. I had a grandson born at 15 oz.
who had heart surgery when he was 3 days old. He spent months in
the hospital. At the time he had a 4 yr old sister. Miracles do
come. He is a robust 4 year old now.

I want to say thank you for all the expert advice, the tutorials are amazing and so are you guys!
I successfully have made my grandkids happy with your guidance.
My 3month old grandson is undergoing his 2nd heart operation the end of May and I wanted to make some movies for his siblings before I went up there...and because of the wonderful people here I accomplished that....went from not knowing anything to making a dvd.
I would like to say that sometimes I think we overlook the simple things making it harder than it is....for example the more I read the more confused I got! lol Of course that could be a sign of old age!
The only problem is the curse of the black pearl...I get an error saying something similiar to 'bad sector' I'll have to look it up again. Needless to say it won't burn?
I have DVDFabPlatinum, Nero am I missing something with this particular movie?
I have tried 2 different copies and both had the same error.
I have never used shrink just the 2 programs I mentioned above.
Anyone have any clues or having problems with this movie?

Again I can't say it enough Thank You.

use anydvd running in the background whilst you rip the black pearl, and then burn with whatever program you use.Make sure that the 'doner' disc is clean with no visible imperfections.I have had in the past had a 'bad sector' warning that is caused by copy protection when not using a program such as anydvd.Try it free for 21 days....

First off, you're welcome! If you came away with a little more knowledge than what you started with about a particular subject...well, I guess we did all right then. ;)

I agree with pieman, try the free trial of AnyDVD. I personally use it and used it on that particular movie, so it will work. You can find AnyDVD in the original link I provided.

Finally, you and your family have my deepest sympathies in regards to your grandson. That many major surgeries in such as short span is rough. Keep the faith, be strong, and I hope everything turns out for the good.

Hi Well I tried to no avail to do the curse of the black pearl.
anydvd went as far as 38% and gave me File IO 3 VTS-01-3.VOB and some long number.
    It was 2,84 gb
The 5 files that copied were
    video_ts.vob
    vts_01_0.vob
    vts_01_1.vob
    vts_01_2.vob
    vts_01_3.vob

so needless to say I don't think I'll succeed with this one.

Do I dare to ask where and how is the best possible places to find
    movies and concerts?

My little one is doing ok getting ready for surgery the 29th
Will let you know how it goes.
Trying to get some movies and games (for the pc) and xbox for the grandkids before I go to be with them.

Once again thank you for all your support, advice and patience.

I have dvdfabplatinum, nero 6 and anydvd as far as programs.

Have a great day or evening depending on where you are!

Hi again, wanted to thank all who replied with advice.
Yes I believe the dvd was scratched.....spent 2 days got files d/l'ed then had to convert them they were avi files worked using Nero. I followed one of your amazing guides I would have been lost without it. Explained things much nicer than any of the books!
Kudos to the guides and those that have taken the time to create them! Awesome work.
What I can't seem to grasp is what does run anydvd in the background mean?
Also if you have only a dvd burner (1) on your system what exactly would any of you suggest as the best way to make copy?
I have currently installed Nero 6, and dvdfab platinum and that's it.
I have to say that nero did an amazing job (although time consuming) job of converting the avi ....
Can't thank you enough. Have a great day or evening wherever you are. AfterDawn is amazing.
