I would like to create a Half-Life 2 image on my hard drive so I don't have to insert the CD, but each time I try to mount and play the image (using Alcohol 120), I receive "Please Insert CD-Rom". Now I've created working images for games like Doom 3 so I guess its some new protection on HL2. Does anyone have any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated.

HL2 uses a SecureROM protection. I think it has more to do with steam than with copy protection.

So does that mean the only way to play the game is with the disc?

Nephilim got his HL2 through a ati promotion, and was able to download the game. I know he doesn't have to put a disc in, since he didn't use a disc to install the game.

Haven't got that to work, but era200 said (s)he was able to make a successful backup, but you still need to insert the backup to play.
