Hi, I have been having a lot of problems with my computer. The computer has been running very slowly, lots of lag yet only one maybe two program are running. I do not know what could be causing this but, I think i might have some bad sectors in the HDD. I am not sure what might be causing this problem, that is what led me here. My computer is a Dell Inspirion 6000 (laptop), 1.60GHz, 512mb ram, 30GB. Anyone think they can help me? If any more info is needed, please ask.
what operating system are you running, try finding if there is a program which is hogging all of your CPU usage. press Ctrl+Alt+Delete click on the processes tab search the list and look for anything that is using above 40 on the CPU section, (excluding Sytem idle process) if there is one then please type its "image name" here. e.g. explorer.exe
Windows XP Media Center Edition Sp 2 I take it when you meant above 40, you mean above 40,000 k? If so then : firefox.exe 44,308 svchost.exe 43,356 explorer.exe 40,568
if you think that there maybe bad sectors on your hard drive try running scandisk to see if there are any. to do this, click Start Click My computer right click on your hard drive click properties click tools, then click check now select automatically fix file system errors and attemt recovery of bad sectors then press start your pc should then tell you to restart and it will complete the scan upon reboot. after that try defragmenting your hard drive. to do this, click Start Click My computer right click on your hard drive click properties click tools, now press Defragment Now it will open a new program. select your hard drive from the top and then press analyze. it will then probably tell you that your hard drive should be defragmented, just press defragment and it will do it, depending on the size of your hard drive this could be a lengthy operation.
I have tried that, it gets to the end of phase 2 and then a message pops up saying it was unable to complete the check.
Can anyone else help me? Like I said I do not know if it is a bad sector, I am just making a good guess.
Try upgrading your RAM, windows XP requires 512 mb or ram to run, and that's without any programs that you have running. I suggest that you max it out if you can afford it. good luck
Hmm, as long as theres a hard drive thread already started: Ok, so twice now I have had this happen. I turn on my computer, it goes through the loading process, and when it hits the windows loading screen, it stalls. It just keeps loading. For hours. All sound (besides my fans) cease. I don't hear my proc or my drives working. So I unplug two of my hard drives (both sata) and leave my c drive (an ide) plugged in. It boots up just fine. So I plug in one drive, and my go into my bios to see if it's reading, and it does. Then I go back to my computer and it doesnt read it at all. So I look in computer management, and there it is. I shut down, unplug that sata and plug in the other one. Same thing. Finally realized that I had to re-assign what drive letters the drives were. Took about 2 days to realize that. Problem is, I don't know what caused all this. The second time around, I had just mounted a new fan/Cold Cathode light into my box, and went on a gaming spree for a around 5-7 hours, got back home, booted back up, played around for another 4 hours, and then shut down. The next morning, the problem started. Any ideas?
