I'm going to be putting my trusty old Yamaha RXV-890 on the bench and I want to upgrade to a new reciever with HDMI capabilities. I think I've got the concept of the different configurations of HDMI i.e.

*upconvert ~ upconverts your signal to 1080
*passthrough ~ signal is passed straight through with no manipulation or enhancment
*switching ~ this is the one I'm confused about. Is it the same as upconverting?

I just found the answer to the switching...

I've got 4 recievers in mind ranging from $250-$400 as follows. Recommendations, comments and suggestions are welcome:

    Onkyo 606 $399 (upconversion) ~ http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Onky...08513/catOid/-12851/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

    Denon 788 $379 (pass-through) ~ http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Deno...91645/catOid/-12851/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

    Denon 688 $299 (pass-through) ~ http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Deno...91644/catOid/-12851/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

    Yamaha RXV-563 $400 (upconverting) ~ http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8734621&type=product&id=1201913281319

7.1 isn't important to me, but it seems to graduate to upscaling this is the way to go. I'm also partial to the Yamaha and Denon as I've had excellent luck with both brands in the past, but I'm sure Onkyo makes a solid product.

i bought an onkyo tx-sr875 and am very impressed by what it does i first heard it in action in hardly normal driving the biggest sound system they have,it was the back i fell in love with 4 hdmi in 1 out and with things coming hd,pc,blue ray,dvd/dvr,sat/cable box i am starting to lose connections lol one advantage i was told 1 hdmi only cable needed video and audio combined,i originally went for 5-1 but needed more sounds in centre of room and bought 2 extra, and if u wanted u can add more speakers for a second audio room.i also did a google search and found out this unit out classed everything else out there in its class re hi-fi mag as this was designed for the future, and that is what u have to do think ahead.dont ask me any techy as i aint got a clue [still learning ] lol

Since the Onkyo is the only one, of those you listed, that can handle the new HD audio formats, it would be a no-brainer for me.
If you have, or plan on ever having, a Blu ray player, the Onkyo is definitely the way to go.

You can step up a model or two, on the other brands, and get the same HD audio handling features. But for the money, it's going to be hard to beat the Onkyo.

If you don't care about the HD audio, any of the others you mentioned will be great also. I like Denon too. I'd love to have the Denon 3808ci, but it costs about $1500. Too rich for me...........
Good luck with whatever you get.

    BTW.........
Amazon.com has it right now for $369.66 with free shipping.

    Thanks for the comments cactikid.

Good to see you JVC, long time no chat :)

I think I've set my attention to the Onkyo. It has more HDMI I/O for future expansion if needed and, like you said, for the money it has a lot more to offer. I like the idea of upconversion as I was going to start looking for an upconverting DVD player next, but I won't have to with the Onkyo and I also like the HDMI switching as setting up my Logitech remote is a bitch with the and getting the input set correctly when changing sources.

Right now the only HDMI component I have is the Sat reciever, but maybe in the future more will enter the picture.

They look good endo, but more than I want to spend and they are too big for my entertainment center. The only reason I'm changing my setup now is because of size limitations. The Yamaha I have now is 18 inches deep and sticks out of the front of my center about two inches because of the cable inputs in the back. I think I've got about 18 1/2 inches to play with and still be able to put the door back on the front of the center.

If you go with the ONKYO, make sure you set your system up to let the receiver do all the decoding.

OK....I'm going with the Onkyo BTW.

So if I'm right the following will be the setup

    DVD player to Onkyo
    Xbox to Onkyo
    Wii to Onkyo
    Sat to Onkyo
    Onkyo to LCD via HDMI

The more I hear of the new receivers producing more power, yet they get lighter in weight, means to me the manufactueres have abandoned the old linear class AB amplifiers, and gone to class D switching amps.. Even the high end class D have not the musicality of the old linear class A, AB.

IMHO, the class D just don't sound as good or as natural as the A,AB

    Just my thoughts

Just an update fellers....due to size restrictions I had to go with the Sony Sony STRDG920. I was the only one I could find with the features I was looking for under 15" deep. For some reason I was thinking I had 18 inches of room to play with, but upon remeasuring (glad I did), I only had 17"...add the RCA, Component & HDMI and I will be maxed out. I really wanted to stay away from Sony, but I didn't have much choice so I've got my fingers crossed that I'll be happy with it.
