Help! All Disk Drives going crazy...

I hope someone can help out. About a week ago the DVD playback on both my DVD drives was screwy and I found that some disks I had created were no good as well. I had round cables and I decided to swap them out with regular old flat IDE cables instead. Things looked OK, but I could not access my secondary 40G HD. It recognized the drive but prompted me to reformat it. Seeing how I had DVD backups for most of the stuff on the secondary drive, I tried to reformat but XP sez it cannot be formatted. And since then, my DVD drives are acting up again. So far, I have had no problems with my primary drive, a Maxtor 160G HD, but I am afraid one day I may go to boot up and I will have nothing. Any suggestions? Setup advice? Mobo? (I hope not). Thanx!

Well, I updated the firmware, and I was actually able to reformat my secondary drives (goodbye porn... err, I mean quality stored HD files). But, alas, my DVD drives are playing back very poorly. I set them up differently and so on and so forth. Oh, how will I restore my DVD drives back to their once heralded splendor?
