Your drive does not support booktyping(bitsetting) with original firmware. However, there is enormous support for Nec drives, so you're in luck. You can flash with modified firmware.

I have a Nec 3550 that I got close to 2 years ago. I flashed it with liggy's modified firmware a couple of days after I installed it;since then, been burning my DVD+Rs booktyped to DVD-ROM with 100% burn success and 100% playback compatibility.
As for the second part of your question, can't really help.
