When u get a mod chip it will help u lock or unlock your hard drive, or whatever problem your havin. To be honest soldering is really hard if u dont know what your doing, i been through that b4, i almost mess my xbox up.

I sent you a PM on how to fix this with another modded box, let me know how it works out for you and I'll post it for others to see.

Otherwise, the trick to a hotswap is to:
    Remove cover
remove hard drive (keep IDE and power hooked up)
power up the xbox- right after the xbox searches for a DVD remove the IDE cable
If you timed it right your hard drive should be unlocked, do not turn off your xbox, do what you need with the hard drive and replace the IDE cable then power off you xbox.
I like to keep the power cable plugged into the hard drive for safe keeping, why risk anything when you don't need to.

i saw the hoplessness of this topic's direction and decided to post for a change : )

    get the spider chip.
    then visit
    http://www.copying-xbox-games.com/tutorials.php?tutorialid=00000035

Simply put, I screwed in the chip into the motherboard of the xbox and poof, I was able (follow installation instructions for your version of xbox) to load any bios cd.

Follow instructions on above website on how to obtain an evox bios and flash the chip with it. Go with evox m8+

go to www.aid.xbox-hq.com, dl their auto installer deluxe, and it will fix your hard drive automatically - it will ask you what to do with the hard drive.

To buy the chip I would recommend a more trustworthy dealer such as www.divineo.com

Hotswap- switching out hard drives while they are powered up and unlocked.

That is the sole purpose of a hotswap, to get around the password.

Hey i tried softmodding my xbox and i got the serror 16. Does anyone know if this disk above really refreshes the xbox and boots when no games can boot on my xbox. Does it over ride it? Also if this doesn't work (the disk) the i would like to get a modchip but i need to be able to go on xbox live and i want to get a solderless modchip that can be turned on and off (for xbox live). Please if any one can answer these questions reply.!.

I found a modchip called SmartXX V2 it looks very good and it can be turned off for xbox live, it comes with a linux startup disk too.
