    there may still be encrypted/locked files in there. If it is an OEM OS partition, it's hidden. It is only accessible with the OEM disc.

    Folks;

    I am new to this forum but was searching for help with a new second hard drive and found this thread. I am running XP and have exactly the same problem as described here, with my new 160 Gb drive showing up in Computer Management as Unallocated Space. But when I right-click on it I don't get the option to format it. Only options are New Partition, Properties, or Help. Selecting New Partition launches a Wizard--is that what I want to do to format it (doesn't look like it)? I just want to format not partition.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    have to do a partition 1st before you can format that drive. somewhat the same with dos & win9x that you had to fdisk the drive to make a partition or partitions than format it so dos or win9x sees the drive & save info on it. read this link tho for seagate still the same for all manufacturers. http://www.seagate.com/support/kb/disc/howto/install_xp_disk_mgmt.html
