Do you really need another media player software?

    Posted by geno888 on 20 August 2006 - 21:44 - Source: Techtree.com

Standalone players are not the only way to watch a movie. You can watch a movie also on your computer, but it's necessary to use a media player able to support all your video formats.

There are already many media players available, some with plenty of features, but usually not available for free. But do you really need these costly features? And is it really possible to obtain certain features only by payment?

Now it's available, a new, and FREE tool named GOM Player:

GOM is the kind of player all users pray to the Gods of software for. It supports all kinds of features for highly advanced users who desire to watch video clips at the best quality. It can also play one of your broken AVI files that other media players seldom play.

GOM Player supports most of the codecs (AVI, DAT, MPEG, DivX, and more) by its own embedded codec system. The best part is, it doesn't make you scourge through a zillion web pages just to get that one codec; GOM will automatically lead you to an open-source codec web-site. It also has a registered patent for playing broken AVI format or AVI video files that are being downloaded.

What makes GOM Player interesting is that it allows the user to also play broken AVI movies, a feature that is missing in most media players (even not-free ones). During tests, GOM also showed to be less resource hungry than other media players, and this is an advantage for people that have not a recent machine.

Freeware to create smaller GIF files
    New in GIF Optimizer
    • create even smaller GIFs
    • cut, copy and paste graphics to / from the Windows clipboard
    • color reduction to create much smaller GIFs
    • sort graphics in batch optimizations by name, size, bytes saved etc
    • preview to compare the original graphics with the optimized GIFs
    • Recursively search for graphics through folders and their subfolders

    RIAA urged, 'Stop the lawsuits!'

    Terry Mc Bride

p2pnet.net News:- The major music companies should drop their “litigation-driven antipiracy efforts” and, “embrace a world of micropayments and alternative revenue streams that target the new music-consumption habits of digital music fans, says Terry McBride, ceo of Canada's Nettwerk Music.

The company's line-up includes Avril Lavigne, Dido, Sum 41 and Sarah McLachlan and Nettwerk decided to pick up the legal bill for Elisa Greubel, a 15-year-old Texas girl who's being sued by the Big Four Organized Music family's RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for allegedly downloading music without permission.

The multi-billion-dollar Big Four, Warner Music (US), Vivendi Universal (France), Sony BMG (Japan and Germany) and EMI (Great Britain) disingenuously claim they're being “devastated” by people who use the p2p networks instead of buying over-priced, cookie-cutter Big Four 'product,' as they call their releases.

Mr.Tweak writes to tell us that they have a review posted of a new wireless router from ASUS. What sets this router apart from others is that in addition to being a wireless router/gateway is that it also functions as a thin client system with a pre-installed 160 GB IDE drive (no SATA support sorry) and three USB 2.0 ports for peripherals. If you happen to use one of those USB ports for another drive the router will also support RAID 0 and 1, quite a bit more than the average router.

IT LOOKS LIKE those digital rights management (DRM) infectors have lost another round, cry for them.

The infection known as FluxDVD, you know the one that puts so many bad sectors in downloaded and burnt DVDs that most players have a hard time playing it, has been comprehensively fixed by Slysoft.

Forget violent male gamers, little girls are the psychopaths

That's it, I'm going to have to disconnect myself from the Internet, board up the windows and load up the FN. This world is just too sick and twisted for me nowadays. Read this. It's about little girls who play The Sims. The only difference between them and the little cute girls we expect to be playing The Sims is the fact that they're Goddamn nutjobs.

    Irish Company Claims Free Energy

DUBLIN (AFP) - An Irish company has thrown down the gauntlet to the worldwide scientific community to test a technology it has developed that it claims produces free energy.

The company, Steorn, says its discovery is based on the interaction of magnetic fields and allows the production of clean, free and constant energy -- a concept that challenges one of the basic rules of physics.

It claims the technology can be used to supply energy for virtually all devices, from mobile phones to cars.

Steorn issued its challenge through an advertisement in the Economist magazine this week quoting Ireland's Nobel prize-winning author George Bernard Shaw who said that "all great truths begin as blasphemies".

Sean McCarthy, Steorn's chief executive officer, said they had issued the challenge for 12 physicists to rigorously test the technology so it can be developed.

"What we have developed is a way to construct magnetic fields so that when you travel round the magnetic fields, starting and stopping at the same position, you have gained energy," McCarthy said.

"The energy isn't being converted from any other source such as the energy within the magnet. It's literally created. Once the technology operates it provides a constant stream of clean energy," he told Ireland's RTE radio.

McCarthy said Steorn had not set out to develop the technology, but "it actually fell out of another project we were working on".

One of the basic principles of physics is that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only change form.

McCarthy said a big obstacle to overcome was the disbelief that what they had developed was even possible.

"For the first six months that we looked at it we literally didn't believe it ourselves. Over the last three years it had been rigorously tested in our own laboratories, in independent laboratories and so on," he said.

"But we have been unable to get significant scientific interest in it. We have had scientists come in, test it and, off the record, they are quite happy to admit that it works.

"But for us to be able to commercialise this and put this into peoples' lives we need credible, academic validation in the public domain and hence the challenge," McCarthy said.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060818/bs_afp/irelandscienceenergy

We have developed a technology that produces free, clean and constant energy.

This means never having to recharge your phone, never having to refuel your car. A world with an infinite supply of clean energy for all.

Our technology has been independently validated by engineers and scientists - always off the record, always proven to work.

Spear Phishing Targets Users On Networking Sites

pharming Seventeen year old Dan Leveille uses MySpace.com not only to connect with friends but to promote his photography and web design business. "I'm on there pretty much every day; I can spend like hours on there," he said.

So when a music group contacted him, Leveille clicked on the profile, but a login page popped up instead.

"I thought it was MySpace, it looked exactly like it, but on the address bar, it didn't say MySpace.com," Leveille said.

Computer expert Ron Teixeira says Leveille was almost hooked by something called a spear phishing scam, the newest form of phishing. Social networking sites are major targets. wcco.com - Spear Phishing Targets Users On Networking Sites Linked by shanmuga Sun Aug20 2006 10:56pm EDT

Introduction to Windows Firewall with Advanced Security

vista1 Windows Firewall with Advanced Security is a stateful, host based firewall that blocks incoming and outgoing connections based on its configuration. While typical end user configuration of Windows Firewall still takes place through the Windows Firewall Control Panel tool, advanced configuration now takes place in a Microsoft Management Control (MMC) snap in named Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.

The inclusion of this snap in not only provides an interface for configuring Windows Firewall locally but also for configuring Windows Firewall on remote computers and via Group Policy. Firewall functions are now integrated with IPsec (Internet Protocol security) protection settings, reducing the possibility of conflict between the two protection mechanisms.

Windows Firewall with Advanced Security supports separate profiles for when computers are domain-joined or connected to a private or public network. It also supports the creation of rules for enforcing server and domain isolation policies. Windows Firewall with Advanced Security supports more granular rules, including Microsoft Active Directory® users and groups, source and destination Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, IP port number, ICMP settings, IPsec settings, specific types of interfaces, services, and more. Why does everyone try to give me things I don't want. I just uninstalled Quicktime because no matter how many times I removed it from startup it would come back, it is like the program you cannot kill.

    Culver City, DRM town,...[IMG]

p2pnet.net News:- Culver City in California, the “Heart of Screenland” and a “significant center for motion picture and later television production,” has now added another proud boast to its claim to fame.

The first Los Angeles municipality to offer the public a free all-access Wi-Wi, it's also probably just become the first US city to fall to the blandishments of DRM snake-oil salesmen. And it did so on the strength of a bald-faced, vested interest marketing scheme scantily dressed up as a study.

DRM, short for digital restrictions management, aims to stop people from doing what they want with products they've bought and paid for. The major corporate movie and music companies have, however, started using their massive PR and media machines to re-invent a purchase as a rental contract under which people who thought they'd bought CDs or DVDs suddenly discover they have only very limited use of them.

Weird Al to the RIAA ....[IMG]

    'Where's my money?'

p2pnet.net News:- Not long ago Weird Al let it be known that the very record industry that says it is out to search and destroy file sharing so artists like him would get paid, has failed to pay him a fair revenue generated from his music on iTunes. "THE RECORDING industry is using online sales to screw artists for more cash" the Inquirer quoted Al. Now Al is striking back in the way he knows best...

Al's latest song titled "Don't Download This Song" is now available - as a free MP3 download. Posted on his MySpace site the parody's title sounds like a plea to file sharers, but in reality it is a savvy shot against the record industry.

Sample lyric? "'Cause you'll start out stealing songs/but then you're robbing liquor stores and selling crack and running over school kids with your car/So don't download this song/The record store's where you belong."

So download Don't Download This Song. It's DRM free in the MP3 format, which means it can be played on every player including the iPod, a statement in itself. Do it. Even Lars Ulrich knows it's wrong.

Plextor unveils tiny bus powered portable writer: PX-608CU
Posted by Dan Bell on 23 August 2006 - 03:39 - Source: Hartware

Plextor has announced a very small, USB bus powered burner, which means you need no external power supply, that is also RAM compliant! This is a very neat concept and it will be interesting to know how much this thing will cost and also what software it will come bundled with. Looks like you need to be running Windows 2000 or XP to use it though. From this press release over at Hartware.net, we also learn that the PX-608CU features lower power consumption, for example, just 4.8 Watt during DVD-R 8x writing, and includes tilt adjustment – a new technology in OPU design.

Rudy de Meirsman, Sales & Marketing Manager of Plextor Europe, says: “The PX-608CU is the new king of ultra portable DVD writers, until portable Blu-ray units are developed, yet it is not much bigger than the discs themselves. Our new clamshell design looks great and performs even better with Plextor reliability built-in as standard. In addition, it is an ideal complement to our existing range of optical and hard disk storage drives.”

Separately, Plextor is also announcing its slot-loading PX-608AL version which is designed to be built internally into laptops. A small shot of this drive can be seen in the press release as well.

A good place to discuss this drive, would be our Plextor DVD Burner subforum, where astute and esteemed member, bichonn, spotted this drive several hours ago and already started a discussion thread.

Plextor's new shape ultra-portable DVD writer is the smallest available in the world. Measuring just 15.9mm high and weighing 250g, the pocket-sized PX-608CU is ideal for mobile laptop users and those requiring a modern, stylish and compact unit to use anywhere.

The newly-designed clamshell chassis is the latest innovation from Plextor and not only provides a highly portable ergonomic unit for improved ease of use, but it also incorporates high reliability and durability for long term operation.

It is USB 2.0 bus-powered for both maximum convenience and true plug-and-play usability (no need for an external power supply) – very handy for the mobile executive to burn CDs and DVDs on the move, or for home users to burn and back-up important data from multiple computers.
