    You open it with a dvd player like PowerDVD or WinDVD

    A similar thing happened to me (see http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/89911).
    I noticed that if the .dat comes from a DVD I can even edit it, but if it comes from a SVCD I can only see it (e.g. with the last version of Windows Media Player) and I cannot load it, e.g. with TMPGenc or Virtualdub even if I have the last version available.
    Just 'associate' .DAT-->WMP.

    I'm still waiting for an answer, because I have a NTSC SVCD and I would like to add subtitles and to convert it to PAL.

    How do i open a .DAT file? How do you open any file: Answer double click on the file or right click on the file and choose open with and choose your player now if the dat file is a mpeg2 you might have to open it with powerdvd or something like that but if its a mpeg1 it should be easily playable in windows media player
