A similar thing happened to me (see http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/89911).
I noticed that if the .dat comes from a DVD I can even edit it, but if it comes from a SVCD I can only see it (e.g. with the last version of Windows Media Player) and I cannot load it, e.g. with TMPGenc or Virtualdub even if I have the last version available.
Just 'associate' .DAT-->WMP.
I'm still waiting for an answer, because I have a NTSC SVCD and I would like to add subtitles and to convert it to PAL.
you can open it with [bold] Windows Media Player [/bold]in a very easy way and without needing a DVD player or somthing like that .
just open with ... Windows Media Player
