You can make a VCD (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/110106) , a SVCD (http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd2svcd_with_tmpgenc.cfm , read it from the 'FitCD' passage), a KVCD (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/124272). First, open the AVI with VirtualDub and check if you receive a warning on the audio stream (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/129217).
Exèperience is, as always, the best strategy. My suggestion is to make the easiest stuff (VCDs) first, the others later. Ah, you have to split the movie into many CDs so that each piece is <55'(SVCD) or < 80' (VCD). Maybe 2-3 parts for SVCDs and often 2 parts for VCDs (many movies are 1.5 - 2h long). KVCDs need not to be split (up to 120-140' fit in a CD-R) , but you'll lose a little quality.
