this ia n00bie question, and im sure the answer is under my nose, i think i am on the right path tho. i have a dell laptop, and i want to record shows/programs on tv to my laptop. what do i need? my cable service is time warner, i have a HD box from motorola that comes from time warner. its plugged directly into my sony LCD, 1 connection is HD and i have it connected also with those regular 3 connector cords, the red, yellow and white cord. the HD received has a gang of ports. a firewire port (i think) 2 or 3 USB ports, HD port, the 3 color cord ports. i was told all i need is a usb tuner adapter for my laptop. then someone else told me to get the tuner card for the laptop and go that way. id like some input from whoever has does it firsthand, what do i need to do, buy, whatever, to get this working. i dont wanna give adelphia another 20 bucks or whatever they want a month for their dvr box, and finding out that tivo cost a monthly subscritpion, just retarded. question i have tho, if i want to record a show, can i have the cable box plugged into my TV and laptop @ same time? what kind options do i look @ for this?
You might want to look into the Hauppauge HD PVR. The box does most of the work, and you can record in HD (up to 1080i). You can also capture the Dolby Digital AC3. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/710870 Here is the website: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html
I've been using the Hauppauge HD PVR for several months...and it works very well for me. The video quality is amazing, and the files that it encodes to my PC are AVCHD. AVCHD is Blueray compliant...so I can burn AVCHD on DVDs and play it back on any Blueray player or PS3. High Recommended...
