In case anybody is wondering I'm still looking for that magic number. 4000000 was too big unless I did something wrong and 3975000 was 7.71 gb. I'm trying 3990000 now. My cpu has to hate me.

Hmm... if 2236400 creates a disc that is 4.32GB, I can see why the number I gave you oversized... since you're looking at 8.5 (I was incorrectly thinking "double it" -- sorry about that). You'd think it would need a number somewhere like 4400324. Subtracting 100GB for inaccuracy of the encoder you'd think 4352110 would be the magic number for an 8.5GB disc.

Aiming for 7.95 instead of 8.5GB would seem to come to about 4115597. I assume DL uses goofy numbers like single layer does, calling 8.5 billion bytes "gigabytes" -- when in reality 8.5 gigabytes is actually 9,126,805,504 bytes (using powers of 2).

4049907 would get you to within 100MB of the edge (50 for each layer). I don't think I'd get any closer. There's also that question of where the layer break is -- as it might require you to shave a little more off.

Yeah, I too realized doubling the sectors for a dvd5 was too big just by doing the math. I tried a value of 4000000 and it was a little too big but I must have messed up somewhere because I later tried 3999999 and it was 7.76 gb (7950 mb). A DL dvd should be 8152 mb. On my next attempt I'm going to try 4040000. This is turning into a royal pain in the a$$. I've run this folder through rb/cce at least 6 times now at about 5 1/2 hours a pop trying to achieve a target size around 100 mb under 8152 mb. This times got to be close. Wish me luck.

You may want to consider using ReJig for your testing. It will only take about 20 minutes for the encode portion. After you get the sizing right, you can use an encoder.

Finally, I do believe I have determined the magic number. Thanks jdobbs for suggesting ReJig. I only wish you would have suggested it sooner. First attempt with ReJig didn't work because I forgot to chance target sector for ReJig and left it set for CCE. Anyway the magic number useing Rejig is 4050000. The size of the video_ts folder (and iso) is 8042 mb (7.85 gb) which is 110 gb less than a blank DL dvd (8152 mb). The reduction level from 14.4 gb to 7.85 gb is 51.5%. I'll let you know how good (or bad) the video quality is after I have burned it to a DL disc and also if there were any problems with the layor break and so on. I'm running it through CCE now with CCETargetSectors=4050000 to be certain this is the value I need. I ordered some verbatum DL dvd+r's and they should be here thursday. Once again the magic number for a DL disc is 4050000 unless I run into problems burning in which case I will let you know.

I'm not sure where I screwed up on the initial try of 4000000 but it cost me a lot of time. The value you listed for LOTR was pretty close L8ter and may prove to be the magic number when it is all said and done.

My last encode useing CCE and a value of 4050000 came in at 7.85 gb (8046 mb) leaving 106 mb leeway and with any luck should work.

Aw, sweet success. No problem with the layer break and the video quality is good and thats on my 52" hdtv. Better than I expected especially with a reduction level of 51%. Playback is flawless. All menu's work. No freezing, tiling, etc. I used verbatum dvd+r DL discs and booktyped them dvd-rom. I burned at 4x useing my benq DW1620 pro. Hats off to jdobbs (dvd-rb), dimad (dvdremake), and lightning_UK (imgburn). Dvd-rb/cce never ceases to amaze me. Thanks to all that helped with my adventure.

Edit: oops I spoke too soon. Ran into some freezing/pausing problems. Gonna try a burn at 2.4x.

Glad it worked for you and maybe with future use I will come to understand all the ins and outs of this great program. :)
