How to compress files?

    Im about to format my computer but i need to backup important data...and i was wondering if anyone knew a program that can backup data and compress it
    or how i could compress data to burn it to a cd

    7-Zip is a very lightweight, open source program that is supposed to have better compression rates than WinZIP and WinRAR.

    WinRAR is better for high compression rate
