I see why you got confused, let me explain.

when using a hotswap procedure your xbox has to be able to lock and unlock the hard drive. First you unlock your hard drive when the xbox starts up and induce the error 12. You cannot do this since your hard drive could not be unlocked. Now you unlocked your hard drive using a different program (probably a force unlocker) and now you want to relock your hard drive. The only way to do this is to make a eeprom reader, and use the eeprom to lock your hard drive.

If your xbox wasn't locking and unlocking the hard drive you can not hotswap. I didn't realize you were in the wrong section. A hotswap will fix all software errors. Locking and unlocking is not one of those errors.

    Sorry

I know for a fact the eeprom reader will work and you'll have a working xbox shortly after you lock your hd with your eeprom. There are a lot of us that have made the eeprom reader so if you get stuck or have any problems let us know.

Thanks for clearing that up..it all makes sense now!
Ive learnt so much about xboxes in the last week!

The only question I have about the eeprom reader is, what do you find is the best way to temporarily fix the wires of the reader to the eeprom chip?

Oh and I have another question:
I'd like to make my iso boot CD with the softmod on there.
Can I simply replace all the files in the C and E folders with the Ndures files, then create the CD?

Just tin your 3 wires and tack them on to the points, it doesn't need to be neat, just functional. Only use a low wattage iron, i use radioshacks 15 watt and it works nicely for everything i do.

Funny you should mention that, in my signature there is a link for my cheater c. If you click that it will bring you to a place to download. These files will make your xbox start up with avalaunch and have a working ms dash and all other options. If you were to use any other files just make sure they're working and what you want.

yes, just replace the C folder with my cheater c and you'll be good to go. I have over 20 people on here using that c and probably 50 more xbox's i modded. I'd like to say it's an idiot proof way to mod...don't want to knock you down or anything.

Let me know how it turns out, you're getting closer to a working modded xbox.

I'm going to radioshack to pick up some desoldering braid to replace this xbox 360 laser. I'll check back later if you have any questions.

    It worked!
I cant believe it, after all the troubles I had with this I thought I was screwed.
    The eeprom reader saved me.
I had a bit of trouble with the power on the xbox, I got a flashing orange light then it would shutdown after 10 seconds. but I managed to do a read of the eeprom during those 10 seconds.
Burnt the CD with the modded C drive, used xboxhdm to transfer the files and lock the hard drive...and its all good!

I cant thank you enough. You guys are the best.
Hope this helps other people who read this post too.

    Thanks again.

Hi ! i have a small problem. Im fairly new at modding my xbox . And i keep getting the

"Linux CD not Found ! Insert it and try again..."

    1) I want to start from the beginning... i think i did every software right. extracted xboxhdm v1.9 ...

2)extracted the ndure , ran the ndure 3 setup and saved it to xboxhdm linux folder

3)downloaded the updated script for ndure (edited the name and taken out the .htm) and placed it on the ndure folder under linux inside xboxhdm

    4) double clicked on made-iso-win-bat.....followed the screen
    and made a linux.iso (about 409.57mb)

5)burned imaged to disk using nero ...

Now , the problem now is im not sure if im doing this hardware part right....

    1) pc is off ... unplugged the ide from pc hdd and set up cd/dvd to boot ...

    2) power on xbox with ide from cd drive is unplugged causing error 12...

    3) after error 12 shows , i plug in pc ide to xbox hdd ... ( in pc, i wait until i get to the screen where it says: type xboxhdm, xbrowser, etc.... or else it won't load on main screen on 1 - 4 vga option)

4)i tried typing xboxhdm / xbrowser . I wait for about few minutes for it to load... From the Looking for CD-ROM ... it says

/dev/hdr on /xboxhdm failed: No such device....

At the very end result it says :

"Linux CD not found ! Insert it and try again !"

Well any help would be appreciated ! I tried to explain my steps as clear as possible :) Thanks very much in advance !

Oh btw, i put every cable back to its place... and i accidentally left my linux cd in comp ... i tried and see if it would read the cd and it works... i boot up the comp, read the cd info right and almost instantly ... even on xboxhd / xbrowser .... by saying it found a hdd... etc...

does the xbox's hdd might be at fault ?

    Hi Jannie01,
make sure your xbox hard drive has the jumper set to master. The default location is cable select. You need to change it.
Then xboxhdm should recognise the hard drive.

Once completed, remember to change the jumper back!
Let me know how you go.

yeah i tried that and still didn't work, i tried to have the jumper set at master with slave (middle) or take the jumper off for master or single...

If its alright , would u kindly tell me how u do it step by step ? like from boot up of xbox/pc and when to take off cable and plug it in .... if u don't want to that's alright, im about to close up the case again and leave it be. There's always other stuff to keep me busy lol. Thanks for replying viper !

OK this is what I did:
I followed the tutorial exactly as on page 1 of this thread with the following exceptions:

For the "C" folder, I used the cheater C files in C4RN1's post above.

Next I got my eeprom file and put it in the eeprom folder. This is critical. I had to build an eeprom reader to do this, as my hard drive was locked and i had no access to it. If you dont have this file then Im not sure what you can do. If you do, put it in the eeprom folder.

Next burn the iso image to disk.

    Hardware.
OK this is where it is a bit different.
I was able to connect my xbox hard drive to my PC before I turned the PC on (ie, dont boot up the xbox with the hard drive in it to get the error 12 signal) Just take out the hard drive from the xbox and plug it into your pc (so only the dvd and xbox hard drive is connected, oh yeah and the xbox hard drive jumper is set to master)
Now turn on the PC. (Make sure your bios is set up to boot from CD after it tries to boot from hard drive)
Some people have commented that their computer may not recognise the hard drive this way, so they have to do a hotswap (have the pc hard drive connected first to boot, press pause/break on your keyboard, swap pc hard drive for xbox hard drive, and resume)
I did not have to do this on my pc, but see how you go.

You should now see the main screen for xboxhdm.
First press 3 to unlock hard drive.
At the prompt, type "unlockhd -a"
This will unlock the hd with the eeprom file
    now type "reboot"
as before wait for the main screen, then choose option 1 to rebuild from scratch.
Follow the prompts as required. It should install all the necessary files from your iso image
    When finished, type reboot again.
Wait for the main screen, then choose option 3 again.
At the prompt, type "lockhd -a" This will lock the hard drive with your eeprom file.
Thats it. you should be done. plug everything back in and your xbox should boot up with avalaunch dashboard.
Try this and let me know how you go.

It's a lot easier with a eeprom file, though people doing the hot swap don't have that file. That's why they do the hotswap, so the xbox unlocks the drive then you can access it with your computer.

Jannie if i were you i would try to use xplorer 360. You won't get the linux error because you'll be running windows. Just make sure you have your operating system hard drive on the primary master and the xbox's hard drive on the secondary master.

Try this, it's the hotswap with xplorer 360 method i used, and it worked the very first time.

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/332766

The only thing i would change in the quote is instead of praying for the drive to be unlocked just induce error 12 as instructed to in the begining of this thread.

You will be able to read/write to the hdd so you can fix any errors. When you're done shut down the computer and then plug your xbox's ide cable back into the xbox and turn it off. Before you turn off the xbox you need to make sure the cable is plugged in.

If you have any problems let me know

Check your eeprom.bin file with live info to see if it's corrupt. I've helped someone with the same problem and it turned out the eeprom was corrupt and just needed to be re-backedup.

I can't get the iso making program to make the iso.

I run the bat, nothing happens.

First I tried this by copying over a softmodded xbox set up to the C and E folders and do it that way so I would have softmod.. but that didnt work. Then I grabbed the files on the first page so I was essentially doing a completely clean install (with my eeprom and without it) and both of those the iso maker did nothing.

Is there anyone who has a iso of the clean dash files and empty E drive and empty eeprom that can host the iso somewhere so I can dl it?
www.yousendit.com maybe? Ive tried 2 different downloads of hdm (including one in first post) and neither of the make iso win batches do anything.

Ok in my linux/isolinux/ folder, there is no file called boot.cat

it is a parameter for mkisofs. Ive downloaded the 1.9 from xbins, some other place, and xbox scene and every one of those files has not included linx/isolinux/boot.cat

    is this my issue?
