HOW to read your XBOX's EEPROM and GET the HDD KEY WITHOUT removing the chip Or Modding the XBOX

I was reading and I found that your suppose to get a 0 ohm load when connecting each pin (1-4) one at a time to ground on the eeprom of the xbox. For some reason I got a 1 ohm load on pin 3. So, I went ahead and connected each pin (1-4) to each other one at a time, and when connecting pin 3 to each of the other pins I got a 1 ohm load on all 3 configurations, 3+1, 3+2, 3+4.

What could be giving me a 1 ohm load on pin 3. Maybe that's the problem I'm having with PonyProg giving me an error like it's not getting a reading.

 

hey i baught an xbox from videotron and they told me that the hdd was dead so i said ok il buy it anyways and read the eprom from my eprom reader that i have build from this tutorial but now im at the point where i got to solder the wires into my xbox so sda to 5 scl to 6 and ground to body so ok this is done now what i want to know is whats is all the wires that are in the picture where it says sory for the picture for ????
im kind of confused lol

buy the way xbox turns on so i dont need the extra power suplies.

This tutorial is just a fresh install, it does not have a softmod built in, correct? Is there a way to build in a softmod like the Ndure so that the exploit does not have to be done later? Does this only work with hard drives below 137 GB? If so, do I install it on a smaller hard drive, softmod it so it to include the extra partition, and then clone to a bigger hard drive? I am confused on one part, maybe it's already been said and I missed it, but am I suppose to delete the original eeprom from the c drive of the xbox I am ftp'ing from, meaning copy all contents of the c drive to the c drive folder in xboxhdm v 1.9 or do I delete that eeprom as it's not the one I will be using, there can't be 2 eeprom's correct??

Ur not powering the reader correctly...how are u giving it power? that same thing happened to me...u needa use a good power source...try the battery of like a home wireless phone... that is if ur not giving it power from the actual motherboard

 

This is a very good tut i did it when i first saw it on llamma worked great i have some experience with electronics though, This is deffinitly not for a newbie that just wants to play around but if you need your eeprom this will work and it is great thanks

 

i have a question. i built my eeprom reader and i put the zenors backwards on the pcb board with the black stripes facing away from the resistors and i am getting a hardware busy 11- error on pony prog you think that is why i am using a xbox that does power on .i can also post a picture of my eeprom reader

i am also using a 1.6 version xbox and i am hooking up the reader to the lpc pad , it restarts 3 times then just turns off. when i hit read during reboots it gives me the 11- error.

 

I have made an EEPROM reader and read his EEPROM with ponyprog. Then i followed the instructions in xboxhdm v 1.9. I used my xbox's HDD to get the C and E drives (with TDATA and UDATA and all the other stuff i needed). Then i took his EEPROM.bin file that i got from his EEPROM chip and put it where my EEPROM.bin files would be(all 3 places). from there i selected make-iso-win in xboxhdm and i made my file. Then i burned the file with Nero on a CD-RW. Then i put my xbox's HDD in primary master in the computer(after changing the jumpers on the xbox's HDD). After that i booted the computer and switched around the order of devices so that the CD/DVD drive was first. Then i booted the CD with xboxhdm on it. I went to option 3 (something about linux) and then it gave me the option to unlock my HDD so i pressed unlock. Then it gave me a menu that said press -a to automatically unlock HDD with EEPROM and that gave me a kernel was not found error . It also had options -p, -f but i still got the same error. I have done multiple EEPROM reads but i still get the same thing. I have also looked back in UNICRON's tutorial to make sure i didnt do anything wrong. I think that there may be a problem with the xboxhdm but im not sure. Thanks

 

Hey guys, Sorry to bump such an old thread but I'm getting pretty frustrated trying to get this to work. My hard drive crashed in my V6 box and I was pretty set on getting this EEPROM reader to work so that I can lock a new drive and throw on a softmod. I've built the reader with the exact parts listed and triple checked everything but I still have no luck.

When I attempt to boot the box with the serial cable connected it just flashes orange... restarts three times(with no video) and then just cuts off. If I attach the cable after boot I get a successful probe but I get the device busy or hardware error when I attempt a read.
What could I possible have wrong here? I am connecting the wires to the LPC pad and have it grounded out on a case screw, However I have not soldiered them to the LPC because I want to make sure I have them in the right spot before I soldier.
I know it was requested before and no one replied but with the number of people who have successfully done this surely someone can take a second and post a good pic or two of how this connects to a 1.6 board.If I need to I can post pics of my board and setup but I won't be able to do this until later tonight.

Err.. I never used this method, but know of over 100 successful readers working out there. Try connecting directly to the eeprom, and powering the device with the battery instead. Sometimes the xbx goes into a low power mode and doesn't power the eeprom (or something like that..if it's fragging the power rails are not establishing)

Hey, Thanks for the reply. I ended up just taking the reader apart and starting from scratch again. I got a few bad reads after that but when I let the box boot for about 10 seconds and then connected the reader I finally got a clean read. But now I'm having a different problem. I've gone through the whole process of making the boot disk and creating a hard drive but now when I put the new hardrive in I just constantly reboots only showing the initial Xbox screen. I never get an error message or any fragging... just indefinite rebooting. I've tried two different HD, an 80 and a 160 and they both do the same thing. Any ideas? Thanks again for any help.

 

for those of you not feeling confident enough to build one of these things they are readily sold at radio shack or if you are in the UK (and probably elsewhere ) you can get them on Ebay for less than a tenner

Radio Shack? I went to their website did a search for eeprom, and I didn't find anything. You got a part number for the eeprom reader at radio shack?

Nice bit of kit from ebay.. Thanks for the link, that should help those less than confident with soldering.

Infinite reboot.. sounds like some fault in the dash files, I use a cd-rw for the xboxhdm disk so I can have a few goes without having lots of duff disks around. Try a different set of dash files, and just restore the xbox to stock first. Then you can either do the softmod again, or follow some of the hotswap tutorial (without the hotswap of course, because you can lock and unlock the drive) to replace dash files or even do a softmod/dashswap procedure.
Please read the warnings in the hdm docs about the lock/unlock apps.. Sometimes a drive will allow only so many attempts and then turns into a brick.....

sorry mate i`m in the uk .I don`t know if you have a maplins over there .they definatley will have somthing .look for "eprom programmer" or " pic programmer " anywhere you can buy components will sell a pic programmer for varing prices all you want it the cheapest one.

i built one too , but like i say you can get them anywhere you can buy components ....they`re not "readers" as such they`re programmers .

have you got a pic of your board ??

Why don't people listen/read???

If the xbox boots to an error screen, depending on the error the power rails are not establishing properly. In this case you need to externally power the device, not by powering the xbox, but by using a couple of batteries.

The diodes are polarised..make sure they are the right way round.

Component tolerances make a big difference to the operation of a homebrew device, as does quality of soldering and cable length.

There may be other faults on your xbox, such as shorted traces to the lpc points, which are stopping the device working. It's not unknown to have a fried eeprom either, especially as a result of a botched chip install.

 

i don`t think that it`s people not listening/reading i thing it`s more that people are reading and thinking "wtf does that mean " ,not everyone is lucky enough to know what polarised means etc ,it`s easy to you and I, but , if you`re not into electronics you might as well be speaking french ,and would YOU go learn french just to fix a poxy xbox ??

if you guys that are building readers can post close up pics of the ones you`ve made that aren`t working we can tell you if you have built it correctly ,then we can get on too the external power issue .
