If security is enabled on the drive, it means it's locked! What happens when you put that drive into your Xbox now?

The Maxtor? It is giving me the error 06 when I put it into the xbox. But like I said if it is already locked (security enabled) then how did I mount the C and E folders to it using XBOXHDM? When the drive is locked, XBOXHDM tells you it is locked and will disable the options to do anything to the drive.

I used the same EEPROM file on the Samsung drive and I get no error 06 message from the Xbox, it just hangs, and I presume this is due to an error I have made probably with the dash files I have copied over.

I did not make my CD using your files though and, as you said, you don't know the outcome of using others. That fair enough. I have now downloaded yours and I am going to try again with both drives using clean Xbox dash.

Just want to know if all maxtor drives are not useable or if you know of anyone who has got theirs working? I really want to use this maxtor drive.

Ok, I think your right Chunkhead, I spazzed out the Maxtor drive and I'm a bit pissed about that lol.

Managed to upgrade using the Samsung drive, I put clean xbox dash files on there and then hotswapped and it's now got evox on it. The drive is really slow though and sometimes when I put emulators on it they are not recognised in the evox dashboard. I have reverted back to the original xbox hdd for now.

Is there anyway of getting back my Maxtor drive?

As long as the Maxtor isn't locked, you should be able to format it as a PC drive!

    ;)

Always stick with Seagate or WD!

Thank you chunkhead! Your tutorials are the best. You helped me recover completely from a botched rebuild!

I have 1 problem however. Sometimes when I boot into the m$ dash, I get very loud pop followed by static from the speakers as if some sound file is being corrupted. Everything else works fine. As far as I can tell it's the background music that is being munged as I can still hear the beeps when I scroll through the menu options underneath all of the fuzz.

Never heard that before the new drive build, so I'm thinking something is fouled.

    Thoughts?
    Thanks!

Yeah, probably just corrupt sounds files. I've heard of it happening before! Either put up with it (who uses the MS Dash anyway) or completely replace the dash with a clean one via FTP!

    ;)

    following the tutorial
is there anyway of making the tutorial safer and more clearer please
    this is what needs changing

upon booting up the pc with the iso file on the cd

surely you should say to connect the hdd to power before booting up

    is this not the case?

you should connect power first to the drive before turning the PC on, yes. However, I have connected power to drives in the past when the pc was already on and while it usually fouls something up like shutting down the power supply, it never scrambled a drive.

Sounds like the power supply might have cooked itself. You can replace fuses in them, but they are usually soldered in. Do you have another machine to try? I can believe the supply, but I still doubt the drive itself is dead.

    Press 8 to quit.

If you need to lock the drive (if you don't have a MODCHIP) then re-start again but where you pressed 1 last time - press 3 then type 'lockhd -a'.

Is the xbox light flashing? Maybe the hdd isnt connected right. usually you get an error screen if something is wrong.
