HOW TO: Use a USB Thumbdrive as a Memory Card (For Softmod)

ok i have a question i can not seem to figure out.

i have everything working (finally) and have both files on the usb stick in action replay HOWEVER when i plug it into the xbox it says that the memory card is empty.

anyone know why this is?

 

Im using a confirmed working usb drive( cruzer micro 1gb), i followed the steps, but is still cant see the MaxDrive Xbox

Follow the steps until you get to the part were the file is missing and only the usb is showing then select have disk. browse to the driver folder that you modified and select the driver file and it should show up as maxdrive.

now for my question does anyone have a copy or a link to actionreplay 1.05? the last one doesnt work

 

Hey i started ur process of softmoding and got stuck at the -xbreader- notepad part. first mines just comes up as (xbreader) not (xbreader.inf), then when i try to rewrite the numbers, and tried to save it, a box comes up say, cannot create the 'C:\Program Files\Datel\Action Replay XBOX\Drivers-xbreader.inf file-make sure the path and file are correct. Please help me, thanks

 

I kno this thread is oldish but i cant see any of my files when i plug my thumbdrive into my xbox. the xbox always sees it as empty. and i have transferred several files via AR but cant see them. Please help, ive gotten too far to give up now.

 

ok never mind i figured it out. it was the drive i was tying to use. i can now confirm that the rca lyra 512mb mp3 player works as a mem card, i can also confirm u3 cruzer 4gb doesn't work, The sony 1gb stick drvie doesn't work either.

 

it's been almost a year since I've hacked my xbox using this forum and I'm glad it's still active.

If you're still wondering, than what's your OS (vista? XP?) and are u using notepad and not wordpad? Try coping all the text in that inf then create a new file (by right click -> new text) and name it xbreader.inf, open it and past n save. Also, the .inf extension may not be visible because of your pc's settings.

 

thanks a lot. Its a great guide. But i m lost . I m new to this forum. I have flash drive. i know i need USB to Xbox connector . do i need any other cables or wires to transfer save games. Also do the xbox connector has to female that connects with male usb. can someone give me link on ebay. There are so many cables and i m totally lost. also are this sold in local stores. thanks.

^^ ya the cable in the image i was talking about but where can i plug in that cable in the xbox ? there are four slots in the front of xbox for the controllers. in the back there are three slots one for audio/video output one to connect online and other one to turn xbox on. now tell me where should i plug that cable into the xbox. what problems you had while modding your xbox that wanna quit modding it now. let me know . may be i can help. i m gonna try modding this xbox if it failed will buy new one.

 

any of the four slots u r refering to can be used. i am tlking bout the ones in the front for the controller. i stop the process because i did hav the right usb, action replay would not recognise it, i did not want to waste money on buying more usb's, that is the reason y i stopped. i used a sandisk cruzer 4gb, 8gb, kingston SD 1gb, and 512mb,and 4gb, it is pretty sure that i did not hav the rite usb, and again, gud luk with the moding

 

well ok mr moderator who has nothings else to do, first off i'm not advertising anything, just trying to help out a fellow modder who posted that they needed to find a usb to xbox cable, then also wat is rong with taking short cuts in typing, unlike u, a computor wiz who thinks he or she is the shitttttttt, i can not type 60 words a minute, so i perfer to use short cuts that make my life easier, and next time u think u r the shit, remeber not to judge anybody elses way of typing cause i'm sure if did text, you would not use long ass words

I just joined to provide some insight on how I got mine working. I'm not sure what exactly happened but ...

After following the tutorial I had a Max Drive USB Device.

BUT

When I double checked USB View It showed a Max Drive connected as well as my Kingston USB Drive. The drive had different VID and PIDs. So I copied this line as well as the other into the inf file. It worked for a second, but it wouldn't let me copy save games.

I reinsterted the device into my xbox, and chose to delete everything off the memory card (even though it was empty).

When I came back to the computer I had noticed something earlier that had bugged me. When I was choosing the drivers for the Max Drive I noticed in 1.3/1.4 that there was another inf file in the same dir as the exe (for example /Action Replay Xbox/xbreader.inf and /Action Replay Xbox/Drivers/xbreader.inf)

So I copied my hacked driver into that directory (/Action Replay Xbox/) as well. AR 1.3/1.4 now read my USB Device and would write to it successfully.

FWIW:
I used AR 1.05/1.3/1.4 -- 1.05 is the simplest version (fewest files so I reccomend trying it first)
I used a "Kingston DataTraveler 512MB" which worked
I used a "Kingston DataTraveler 4GB" and a "Kingston DataTraveler 32GB" which didn't work
Also tried "Sony Memory Stick" (various sizes/devices) didn't work as well as a Sansa e260 6GB Mp3 player with no luck.

 

Does anyone know if this method works on 64 bit Windows 7? I've tried 2 USB sticks now and I get an error regarding 64 bit windows so I don't know if it's because I'm using 64 bit or because the USB sticks aren't compatible.

 

i try this but when im at the driver installation i dont see the maxdrive xbox.
what i can do?

 

Well, I suppose this is a ancient thread, but..
At first I couldn't install the MaxDrive driver onto my flashdrive, but I figured out that it doesn't work on Windows 7! It worked fine on my old Windows XP computer.

Although I'm still having problems... Using AR I put the SID files on the flashdrive, when I put it onto my XBox, under memory it recognizes the "memory stick", but when I open it there's no files on it. I plug it back into my computer and check it with AR and the files are gone!
