I want to buy a new computer (advice)

I too would say that the HR-03GT would be a better choice, but bear in mind a fan-assisted HR-03GT (which is the best way of doing it) on each card would fill 6 slots, which for the 780i SLI board means you will only be able to use one PCI slot.

Hey sam, I have a question. Can you put the fan between the fins and the video card on the Thermalright HR-03 GT? So that it points air downwards and then I have a fan there to push it up of the case.

 

I don't think so, but I've never tried. Because of the way the cooler's designed though, it would be more suitable to place it in the normal position as there's no real means of attaching it, and it won't be able to access any air if it's tucked away down there.

 

Sometime in the next 2 days i will be getting all my computer parts except my cpu cooler and gpu cooler. Are both of the parts necessary in running my computer right off the bat or do I need to wait till I get them?

I don't plan on running my computer more than the minimal till I get both the parts installed.

 

Well unless you bought your CPU OEM it will come with a cooler, and all graphics cards come with their own coolers, so you should be fine to start with (assuming you have a CPU cooler, you definitely can't go without one!)

I'm having a heck of a time putting this computer together and i thought I ordered a cpu cooler but I guess I missed that.

What's another good brand that might be in stock at newegg (It can be elsewhere) other than a Thermalright ULTRA 120 cpu cooler?

The Freezer 7 Pro is a good cooler, not as good as the Ultra 120, but a lot easier to install, somewhat cheaper, and newegg actually sell them.

 

It looks like I have everything installed now the bios. What do I need to have set for my 2 video cards then my HD's that are supposed to be raided? I don't want to screw anything up so any bios advice?

You need to change RAID to enable in the Integrated Peripherals menu in your BIOS. I also think you need RAID drivers when you start installing Windows XP(I don't think Vista needs them).

Which CPU cooler did you get BTW?

 

I do plan on using XP so where might I have to look or better yet look for?


Freezer 7 pro is the cpu cooler i ended up getting but I can always put it in my other computer and get a better one soon.

 

Well you can't beat the Freezer 7 Pro for the money. I have one and it's pretty good, but it tends to get a little hot when you have a Q6600. You got a Q9450 right? Your CPU should be cooler than mine.

For the RAID drivers, you need to download this and make a bootable floppy. Press F6 when the XP setup is starting up to load these drivers from the floppy.

Something that one of my friends brought to my attention is that I need to run a 64 bit processor since I have 8 gb of ram installed. Is this true and what operating system do you suggest? I currently have xp sp2 and vista home(originals)

You will need a 64-bit OS to use 8GB, but personally, I see no point. You will never use more than 3GB for a long long time, and 64-bit OSes are not quite as good as 32-bit ones go for driver compatibilities etc.

 

So would it be in my best interest to yank 4 gb of ram out of my computer? I'm just so confused these days and probably need a nice vacation to Atlantis Casino in the Bahamas

 

You have no need for 8GB of RAM. 4 is plenty and will work (well, you'll see 3.5GB, near enough) in a 32-bit operating system.

 

actually driver support is excelent now.

i have been using 64 bit for a while now.

and 8GB ram will be superb, as it boots the speed of vista.

as the 8GB can hold so much info, there needs to be less comunicating between the CPU and the slowest part of the computer the HDD.
