I have a new toshiba satellite laptop and wish to retrieve video from my Sony DCR-TVR340E via the ILink cable I have currently connecting the two. Only I have no idea where to start. The device does not appear in device manager in any form despite (as per the manual) it being set to "Player" mode and being set as best i can to the specs outlined in various guides i've read. Any help would be appreciated in just getting the damn thing to appear to Windows (XP).

    Thanks,
    jordan.

You need a program that support IEEE 1394 capture, more commonly known as Firewire, and less commonly known as iLink (Sony likes to confuse their customers by giving it a different name).

Windows Movie Maker should do this, as well as almost all desktop non-linear editors these days.
