Hey, can anyone help my with my problem. I am getting the illegal disc message using my Ricoh dvd+rw 8160 drive. I have tried using both Tdk and Imation media and then even tried some cheap stuff. @EADG - - lol what's the difference with all those - firmware is up to date - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1705 but 1.08 was dated April 2004!!, so the firmware is way out of date to cope with newer media.. - sufficient total memory but virtually no free memory. you need to make sure to close more programs doen prior to ALL burning to ensure sufficient free memory - as i mentioned above, your firmware is lacking. this is similar to what you should see - - ie a 3line paragraph when the firmware's up to date. I don't know how else to say this but the firmware has been neglected by Ricoh since April 2004, so i can't see a way forward other than to either buy older discs ie slower speed discs that the out of date firmware is able to recognise, or buy a new drive.... your firmware is integral to burning, if it's firmware can't recognise newer media you're gonna have to search high and low for 'older' media that the firmware is able to handle, but it's gonna be easier to spend a few quid/dollars and buy a new drive... - see previous comment

Hey all, I've been experiencing a bunch of problems with burning DVD's. I've read many threads here and tried the solutions but one problem leads to the next. Right now I have the "illegal disc" and "could not perform end of disc-at-once" errors. I've tried flashing the drive, updating the firmware (I think I have), dusting off the lens with compressed air, and none seems to be working... Please advise me on what to do. @basanasa ...or, if you don't want to buy a new burner and can't find new original firmware, you are lucky to have a NEC, which has great modif. firmware support, you can try and crossflash your drive. @creaky I know, this illigal disc palgue will just not go away! I don't have any other suggestions either, but for running out of steam, I can suggest a cold Heineken! It always works for me! if it doesn't work, the problem might be your taste buds, they might have a different acquired prefference. Can try different brand, Corona with lime works for me also, or you need more than just one beer!
Thx a lot for the info, Creaky. I actually got hold of a copy of Nero 7 Ult. Ed. so after using the Nero Clean Tools I installed Nero 7. Now it gets to about 4% before giving me the same message.... Any ideas? you'll have inconsistent results with those particular discs you were using as the burners' firmware isn't equipped to recognise them, so you'll get sporadic results..
@basanas Also, the copy of Nero that you "got hold of ", [bold]Nero Version: 7.0.0.0 [/bold], it is an old and buggy one. That will not help you in any way.

wow..nero 7 is really that buggy?..i just switched back to nero 6.6.0.13 and it burned on the first try..lol, i guess i deserved a few weeks of coasters for deserting good old faithful..thank you for the nero clean tool link..and the idea for back..save me from replacing 2 perfectly good burners
