Last week, a friend was given an external Memorex DVD+/-DLRWL1 F16 (without any install disk). Since then, despite not knowing anything about DVD hardware or software, I was asked to install it on my friend's Windows XP Pro. I downloaded and installed the CDVDinfo 1.3.5 but it read only the internal CDROM and provided no information about the DVD. A couple of days ago, after uninstalling Alcohol 120%, I think, I had to go through the registry and delete all references to its virtual AXVCdRom. And, afterwards, I also uninstalled the Memorex -- thinking that Windows would detect it on reboot and re-install the drivers. It was after this that the "DVD..." references to the drive in Windows Explorer disappeared. Windows Explorer "sees" it as a CDROM. However, apparently Nero 6614 "sees" the DVD but when I try to burn an ISO image off of Windows onto a Maxell DVD-R 16X disc, I get the "illegal disk" error message. I've tried burning the image at 4X, 2x and 1X (the options provided by NeroVision Express) without any success. Below is the log generated by Nero. I'd sure appreciate any insight into this baffling technology. I think I'm way in over my head and out of my league on this one. Is this a hardware problem? Or a software/hardware configuration problem? Or a media problem? Or a problem related to Nero? My friend bought Nero and seems committed to the software. Thanks! Try some other media, get some 8x if you can find it. I have a friend who has an older Memorex burner that will not burn to 16x media, the firmware they have will not support. The last fw update for your burner was over a year ago and IMHO the burner just does not like this media.
Hi. In addition to what arniebear suggested which I also believe will solve your problem, the version of Nero you're using 6.6.1.4 is sort of buggy. Many of us recommend using version 6.6.0.18 instead. If you want to "downgrade" be sure to run the Nero 6 Clean Tool first and write down your Nero program serial number: http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/us/Nero_6_CleanTool.html Nero 6.6.0.18 can be downloaded here (2 packages): Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe
Thank you for your insight and suggestions. Taking arniebear's advice, I tried another media: HP DVD+R Double Layer 2.4x. It burned for about 15 minutes or so, then I got the "burn process failed" message with this log. Is this a configuration error? Thanks! Hello. Your burner is very old in technology years. It's really a Lite-On 1633 underneath the label. Memorex doesn't support this burner with firmware updates. It's all but abandoned by Lite-On as well. I actually own the Lite-On version of this so I have the exact same external drive. That said it is the worst drive I've ever owned. I would suggest going to the Lite-On site and see if their last firmware will flash to your drive. It probably will. The newest Lite-On 1633 firmware is here: http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=153 I don't know where you're located but if you want to burn DL media you should consider a new burner imo. In the U.S., they are down to $30 + change online. My version of this couldn't ever burn a DL disk that was worth anything. Your past media was made by Prodisc and is pretty bad quality. The newer media is made by CMC Mag which rates among the worst disk manufacturers. Good quality media is made by Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and Fuji and Sony labeled as Made in Japan. Here's what I suggest. Go to the Lite-On site (link above) and see if the firmware will flash to your drive. Is so, good. Uninstall the version of Nero you have with the Nero 6 Clean Tool and install Nero 6.6.0.18 as explained in earlier post above. Links are there. I'd forget about trying to burn DL media with this burner. Consider purchasing a new one. If you're in the U.S., I suggest Newegg at www.newegg.com. They have free shipping right now on some of the burners. I'd recommend the BenQ 1650 or the 1655 if you want lighscribe. There should be external versions there as well. But if not any internal drive can be placed in an external enclosure. I'd recommend either Plumax or Bytecc for an external enclosure brand.
