Is this the Cyberhome DVR 1200 model that your talking about ?
That is the only one that I know of that wal-mart is carring for around that price.

Your right it doesn't have the DV Input but the good thing about it it does both media's -R/RW and +R/RW as well as plays .AVI files.

Sorry,I started a new thread and shouldn't have. Please forgive. Here is my question:
Should I download iLO firmware and if so, which, front end or back end or both, if I have the following problem: DVD+R shows a disc error whenever I try to record (using Fuji 8x). Imation DVD+RW 4x works fine. Have e-mailed ilo this info but have not received and answer yet. iLO Model RO5MU. Any help appreciated.

Don't buy them. They aren't worth it. They will be nothing but trouble. You knew that or you wouldn't be on this website. The muffin pan is probably there for a reason. Go for a name brand even if have to pay $50. more.

Hi Shamaron, to answer your question, the R04 is a better unit than the R05, the R04 is a rebagged Liteon 5001 and the R05 is a rebagged Cyberhome 1600. Also the R04 can be hacked through a firmware update to add the 3-hour recording setting, makes it region free and also defeats the copy-protection protocol. Of course it has it's problems (dependant on usage it will have overheating problems, dirty lens, will cause it to not recognize previous recordings, once cleaned, it should work) but for the price and it's capabilities once hacked, well worth it.

    Cheers

Crazycanuck you mentioned the ro4 can be hacked to have the 3 hour recording mode. the ro5 I have has 1,2,3,4,6. is the 3 hour recording mode on the ro4 somehow different or better than the 3 hour recording mode on the ro5?

I am curious as to why the ro5 does not need a cooling fan and the ro4 does? Is the fan in the r04 possibly what circulates more dust through the system thus accumulation on the lense is greater?
thanks. It would seem that the r05 is possibly better except for the macrovision hack?

true the ro4 & ro5 the 3 hour record really dont mean squat , they both can do it , just the r04 needs to be hacked , but I like my r04 since i got to know it now , it made a couple hundred recordings for me before the lens went bad , and it scrapped a few disc's , but with the hack it is region free , Ihave USA ,UK & china dvd's all play fine , and the copy protection hack , well it will do anything now, really. But the best part I like is , on the Ro4 , when the burner lens goes bad , dont buy a new unit for $100.00 , just go buy a generic dvd burner for a pc & install it into the R04 , it works great , and will run ya about $40.00 & you good for another couple hundred recordings. Worked for me & just fo giggles I have tried the following PC dvd burners in my r04 & all work the same , only difference is some start & finalize faster than others , But I used a Lite on , a Memorex , A Sony , A OEM Dell drive , and 2 no name generics , and all functioned the same in the R04.Just for those of you interested.

I have the ILO recorder and took the first one back to Walmart too and got the next better model. The only problem I have is the picture quality on a bright scene or if the backgronf is white or sunny the picture goes white like a white out and you can't see anything. The regular scenes it looks fine as long as it isn't bright. It does not do it when I hook my sat or cable directly to my TV so it is only when running throgh the ILO recorder and I don't have to be recording, just watching it does it, I see it on some commercials on regular channels so I wonder how to fix this. I have recorded several disks and they play just fine in my other dvd player exept the fact it records the bright scenes crappy just like when you are watching it.

Thanks for all the great info, rhutson

Hi Shamoron, very possible that the fan in the R04 does promote a dirty lens. The original drive in the R04 is a plastified Liteon 451 and has NO BOTTOM PLATE, so the dust just seeps through the bottom and up on the lens. I own 2 HD04s and they had the same drive in it with the same problems but as Jweiler3 mentions, you can replace the drive with a PC drive, I've upgraded both my HD04 with Liteon burners, it fits, and was also able to retain its original look and also was able to refit and reuse the original springloaded front plate.

Jweiler3, a question, were you able to actually insert the PC drive in the R04? Did you need to fashion a craddle for the drive?

    Cheers

me I never fashioned a cradle , the replacement DVD drive is actually sitting on top of the old one , , the top is off my R04 , reason being i like to mess with things , my computer the same this thing hasnt been put back together in years , for i have a habbit of changing things around . .But by looking at it , I am sure the replacement drive could be mounted in for it is the same size as origianall , however I am not sure about the face plate , but most likely it could be done , for me I like easy access to components if i ever need a quick change , and still to this day I swap dvd drives in the unit just for giggles to see it there is any noticeable change with any drive

Thanks for all of your advice. I have been sick with the flu and haven't been online. I got a response back from ilo customer service about the tuner problem. I'm including it here:

    Dear Customer,

As a workaround, perhaps you could connect your cable box directly to the
recorder using the yellow-red-white video cord. If that is not possible,
please consider returning the unit to the store for exchange. Sounds like
the tuner circuitry may have a problem.

If you are past the store warranty, then please contact us for a Return
    Authorization number (RMA). http://www.iloservice.com/tech_support.htm

    iLO Customer Service

I don't have a cable box. It hooks directly into my machine. Sounds like they know that the tuner problem exists and that it's a crap shoot as to whether you get a good or bad one. I did like their honesty though, as a company.

I am tempted to give the ilo one more chance but will also give the Emerson you guys recommended a good look. I have taped a few things on the R+ & the RW+ discs does the Emerson take + or -? Thanks for all your help!

The problem that I had with the iLO RO5 was solved when I contacted them by email and they sent me new firmware. Took about 10 days to hear back from them, though. The problem I had was disc errors and not able to finalize +R's. Now does a great job recording from input, recording VCR tapes, playing commercial DVD's and ones I burned myself. Maybe I just got a good one but am pleased so far.

    Hello everyone!
Well, I decided to give the ilo one more chance since it was in my price range and none of the walmarts in my area have the emerson you guys talked about. The closest recorder here is $179 and it'a a R-. I saw that there was a new shipment of ilo's in that they shipped on 2/15/6 they are DVDR05/ZU Bios: 05 72/105N. It was Manufactured Dec. 05. So, as I said, I gave it another chance. Boy have they updated it. It has a whole new software program that is easier to navigate. The remote has added a return key to help when renaming the disc with that keyboard screen which is also greatly improved upon. The keyboard screen has zones that you can punch in a number and it will take you to a grouping of letters so you can jump around a lot easier. But the best news is that there is no hum with the tv tuner. That now works perfectly now.

The only problems that I have seen is that the RW+ discs that I had partially recorded on will play on the new recorder but wouldn't let me record anything new to that disc. It says it's full or that it wasn't recorded with the correct platform. Same with the R+ discs. Thank God that I stopped recording when I saw that there was a problem. I was having a problem with playing the RW+ discs on my other Dvd player which is a Koss. I have experimented with taping RW's on the new recorder and playing it on my Koss and it played perfectly. So I am happy with the new one so far. I guess that the best way to not lose the material that I have on the partially recorded discs is to retape them onto a vhs tape and redo them onto the dvd's with the new recorder. Can anyone think of any way around this? I'm not going to be doing anything major with it until after the olympics. :)

So for anyone that can still return their troublesome recorders, I would definitely advise you to do so. It's not worth the hassle and waiting for them to come up with updates and in my case it was a hardware problem (bad tv tuner). I'm so glad I took your advise and tried another one instead of just putting up with the one I had.

Thanks for all of your help!!

    criket :)
