My Ilo 05 seems to work fine I have never had that clitch but, yes I have thrown out many disk too. Mine were due to write errors, how are you connecting yours RCA or Coax? If your using Coax, try connecting RCA Style. I know I will never buy anouther ILO myself. Even though it 80% succes burn rate, it is unstable. My only complaint is I worry when I burn DVD's thank got I got Dish PVR and I don't loose my movies on it. Come to think about you might have bad cables?
Borrow some from a friend that might be worth a try.

Rooskipow I agree completely. I bought two ILo units ( 04's ) and each one went back to Wal-Mart and got an exchange, then when I was on the second exchange ( the fourth different unit ) it was driving me nuts, recording but refusing to Finalize. I sent it to the Co
(iLo) in MilPitas,CA. They did something to it, they did not say what
and it started working again, then two weeks later it stopped preparing discs or it would record but not finalize. I used a DVD
lens cleaner disc often, tried many brands of DVDR + . Finally I bough a more expensive PHILLIPS DVD Recorder ( $145 from Wal-Mart )
been using it now for a month. (DVDR 3390-37 model) It works great!
And it will use DVDR - or + and DVDRW - and +. Made about a hundred disks with it so far and not one failed.

Thanks Larrygas.I have looked at the Phillips as well for when I buy a new one (asap). And thanks Appealing for your input. I have tried many cables all with mixed results.Basically when it works it is o.k. at best. And the unreliabilty for a videophile like myself is just unacceptable.A lesson learned.I should have spent a little more and will....as soon as I can.

1 out of a thousand units may have no problems and I guess I got it

One thing I did do, that I just remember is I updated my firmware. I was unable to find the link. But I did upgrade it, and did improve the stableness of it from 60% 90%.
I got ahold of ILO and they sent me the link.

just wondering where you got the ilo for 60 bucks I just checked walmart.com and they dont sell this unit anymore what gives.

By the way the ilo 05 model records on + or - disk and I have an idea for you guys if you can try this check what your disk speed is and get a lower speed if you can.

I have a emerson dual deck and it was sent too the company and still was working when it came back not working.

I have an ilo dvd recorder i bought in dec '05, worked okay for a while. Now it won't do anything. I put in a blank disc (same brand i've been using), tells me "no disc" or "unknown disc". If I put in an actual dvd, it still says "no disc". I've tried a dvd player cleaner, but it won't recognize that disc either- so it's useless. Any body have any ideas on how i can fix this? Thanks.

    Greetings fellow ILO owners,
Thought IP would post an update of my situation.
I bought mine last July, basically for an Xmas present as it was on sale and it was an impulse buy.
Ok [my fault] I waited until late November early December to try it out, worked for a while just playing movies before I got brave enough to try to record, that worked for a while then just stopped, locked up with a black screen couldn't even open the drawer to get the disc out. This was between 2 and 3 weeks total from when I opened the box.
I got ahold of ILO which took a while and finally got an RMA, I sent it back at the end of December, got it back the end of April, took me a week or so to get around to hooking it back up, not an easy task since I had to basically take everything apart remove shelves unplug lots and lots of wires cables etc. and so on, and then much to my delight it wouldn't work, the drawer opened and closed but I put over a dozen different types, kinds brands etc, of discs in it and it would not accept one of them, just kept displaying disc failed, not even the ones I had recorded on it not even factory made movies either, it was as broke as when I sent it in except the drawer opened and closed, but when it did you could hear something loose inside and odd noises as well.
Then it took me almost a month to get ahold of someone at ILO, or should I say Wal-Mart, I did get ahold of the real ILO right off, well not right off as it took me almost a week to get through their phone system to a live person, they won't put you on hold it just says no one is available call back later, I must have called 50 times, ran up my phone bill is what it did, finally one morning I got through to a live person but as soon as I said what model I had they guy got almost snippy with a we don't deal with that model call this number and hung up before I could say another word, of course that number was no good.

So I looked up the Wal-Mart web page and finally got to a live person on the phone who gave me, after much searching and time, another number, of course that one was also no good. So then after much more dialing again and again I finally got through to the local Wal-mart, also a long distance call from here, and they gave me another no good number, finally I got someone to go find a good number, I'll tell you now don't ever lose that phone number once you have it, anyway I got another RMA, oh yeah first I tried sending emails just using reply to the last message I had gotten from them on the first go round, I sent like a dozen or more over a months time with no replies, when I finally got through on the phone I told them that, guess what they told me, gee we don't have any records of getting any email from you at all.
So here I am, the middle of June, and still no machine to use, the one year warranty expires in less than a month, I figure I'll be lucky to even get it back before then. And I fully expect that it will either be still broken or will break within a few days.

Good thing for me I went out two weeks after I sent it off the first time and bought me an RCA dual DVD/VHS recorder, it even records in both directions, tape to disc or disc to tape, I need to transfer all the home movies from tape to DVD, and it gives me a choice of from 1 to 8 hours on one DVD, 3 hours is till good quality, 4 is pushing it.
I am right now as I type this burning DVD number 376, and that's not counting all the many coasters I've made along the way, like when power goes out or just blips good, which happens a lot out here during the winter months, it's "Bingo" another new coaster, or the copies I make for the kids and grandkids of movies and cartoon shows like SpongeBob from the TV, 376 is just the ones for me. You see I upgraded my Satellite dish to ALL the channels last fall so instead of trying to copy the tapes, which it won't let me copy any factory tapes anyway I've just been grabbing the movies as they come up.
I did run into one odd thing this last month, HBO blocked one, The Interpreter, I have it on the hard drive, my new sat tuner has one built in, good for like 96 hours of recording, it is almost a Tivo but not quite, but it's good enough for me right now, but if I try to make a copy of that movie, DVD or Tape, 55 minutes into it the screen pops up a window that say nope you can't copy this movie, I got two new coaters out of that deal so far.
I fear this may be the wave of the future and that upsets me a lot. I have almost 1,000 movies on tape, the bulk of which were bought at the store. I feel I should be able to copy them onto a disc for my own use. Even bought a few DVD copy programs for the computer, not a one of them will work on factory tapes even though they advertise that they will. I'm not a pirate, just want to convert to DVD's and dump the tape recorder altogether.
Anyway that is my update on my wonderful experience with ILO, or should I ay Wal-Mart, I will never buy anything from either again, especially Wal-Mart.

Welcome aboard 2confuzed.Misery loves company. You might want to get a video stabilizer online for about 30 dollars.I bought one 12 years ago and was able to copy every movie I rented or purchased. It also works most of the time with dvd's I rent. But some are just too heavily protected like "King Kong" for it to handle.Glad you mentioned that HBO trick.I was going to pay per veiw a few onto my DVR then copy them but I guess that doesn't work. Thanks for saving me yet another aggrevation.Yarrrr me buckos...nothin' like a good pirate copy(strictly for my own home use).

There is a box you can order online or sometimes Best Buy has it that will remove copy gurard from all dvds and tapes and allow you copy or transfer them. It cost around $100 but worth every penny of it. I don't know when people will ever learn ILO is a piece of garbage. Walmart should be sued for selling them.

wow I have no prob on HBO I got Dish PVR, and been recording alot of movies. Where do I get the converter to copy Factory VCR Tapes with macrovision to be able to DVD them?
Ya we all deal with some issues with The ILO, but I can't complain I got 2 ILO 05's and the biggest thing I got with them is 1 coster out of 50 copied at the most. I found that when you not using after alot recording just uplug it over night and plug it in. My other trick is I put on a cooling fan on the top to suck the hot air out. Plugged off 80% of the open fins after installed a cooling fan. That made much more stable, I found when buring DVD's then tend to get warm. Especialy 2 disk in a row.
I have mine set for 7 hours, and the quality is great compare to vcr. I figure for the price of DVD's I want to get my moneys worth.
Here is a odd issue you may help me with. I have to spindals of Memorex DVD + R's one has 8x and my ILO get's to 99% and fails. Well my other spindaly is 16x and works perfect. I used to burn the 8x all the time. What's up with that? What other kind of DVD's work with The ILO's I know mine won't see -R's I tried it.

2confuzed; that's weird about the Interpreter, because I have recorded it off of HBO.

I don't remember where I bought my macrovision elimator. Just go online and type it in. There are several kinds available. I saw one that's a box like a cable box and has all sorts of enhancements on it.

looking for the firmware to an ilo 05 Zi or Z1 --wrote to ilo service center--got the letter back--was their stuff so bad they are now out of business- my recorder is very erratic--even the player often will not read what my computer will read--would like to get the firmware to make it work as well as possible--

If I were you I would take it back or if you can't throw it it out because there is no firmware update I have looked for that and if it is haveing troulble reading it even what make you believe it will read the disk after you burn the update too it.

Thought I would post an update of ILO my adventures. I bought mine July 15th 2005, to date I have only gotten a couple of weeks of actual use out of it, the erst of the tmie it has ben sitting who knows where they attempt to repair them, this is the 4th round or returning it. I keep hoping they will replace it and just send me a brand new one, but no they keep ?fixing? it, yeah right, the first time they had it for around 4 months and sent it back still broken. The last time I got to record almost 20 disks before it refused to work, it would only format them as data disks and refused to record anything on them, sometimes it would claim them to be DVD/RW [they wer just DVD + R's and it still refused to record on any of them.
In the meantime I got a Lite On off of eBay, it has the firmware upgrade, will copy ANY tape or disk, as I have hundreds of tapes I bought it is working out to be worth the extra cost, they go for between 125 and 250 at auction.
I get the feeling the ILO will eventually become a boat anchor or paperweight, it is in my most humble opinion a total piece of junk; what I get for being stupid enough to shop at Wal-Mart that one last time, never more, to quote the Raven, never more.
