As said above, on a DVD+RW, you can go in and edit out a recording so it doesn't show up on the menu but you can not reuse the space it occupied. Recording on a DVD is sequecial so you can't record between 2 (or more) other existing recordings. You will have to erase or re-initialize the RW disc before getting the full capacity of the disc back

I finally decided to try the firmware up date. I made five attempts, burning a new disk each time. No success. All I get is the data disk. I tried all the suggestions on Guitarman’s site, system restore, put disk in, press play button, turn power off and back on, but nothing worked. What should I do next?

AND CANNOT GET A DVD TO PREPARE ALWAYS FAIL....WALMART IS STILL SELLING THIS GARBAGE...TO THINK I PAID WELL OVER $200.00 PLUS SHIPPING AND DELIVERY FOR THIS JUNK...AND THE MP3 PALYER SUCKS...YOU CANNOT EVEN PICK A PLAYLIST...IT ONLY PLAYS ORIGINAL DVD'S. IT CANNOT PLAY BACK-UP DVD'S...I DO NOT THINK IT CAN READ DVD+ OR DVD+RW...

well I am currently on my second unit. the first one failed like what the last person stated. This second one I took it out of the box and immediately patched it. It has been running for 6 months now with no issues. I think there is a quality problem with these units. it looks like some of them work, and some just dont. You buy one you seem to take a 50/50 chance. they are not all junk though, there are many that are happy with them.

I have an interesting problem for anyone who might have an answer.

I bought the 04, and 10 ILO +R disks 4 months ago. I havn't recorded anything in 3 months as I have been way to bussy to even watch TV let alone take time to transfer over anything to DVD. My problem now is that I was going to go back and edit my disks. Name the segments, finalize them, etc..... BUT none of my disks recognize now. I have something on all 10 disks, and have tried to view 5 of them only to have a very long preporation time, then a Failed message.

I havn't patched this machine, and really don't think it's necessary for what I use it for. Is there anything I can try that will make these disks viewable again?

These where recorded in 6 hour mode. If that helps. I know the sharpness isn't as good in that speed, but for what I was recording I didn't need it that sharp. Also these where my first attempts at recording, and I was just testing the machine out.

To add to what I just posted. The disks had been reading fine 3 months ago, but I hadn't finalized any of them.

burn them, FINALIZE THEM, it's really not that hard people...

if you have an 05 you need to finalize your sh*t as soon as you can

    PERIOD.

    crsunlimi,

If I'm not mistaken, the R04 with earlier firmware had a problem with discs burned at 6hr mode and removed before finalizing. I would suggest upgrading to the latest firmware since this does also update the burner in the unit.

Your best bet is to always record and finalize the disc before removing it so there are no problems trying to read the disc later.

Also, if the recorder has been setting a while without use, the laser could be dusty and causing the problem. Try a DVD drive cleaner disc and try reading the disc again. If not, you may try taking the drive apart and GENTLY cleaning the laser with a q-tip and alcohol.

i think the problem most of us have is the drive not being abale to read the discs.. it is hard to finalize something when you cannot even burn to it! I took the ilo apart and cleaned the lense....gues what...it's working again...i could only lift the top of the drive enough...to clean it with like 10 q-tips...there is a lot of dust that gets inside the drive...it will not read generic media though...only memorex 8x...that is good enough for me...and to think i was ready to blow it up...with fireworks....

Thanks for the undocumented info on your post July 5, 05 [this thread]Inserting a chapter mark using the edit button during recording works great.

Yes!!! I've been meaning to send a "thanks" for that for a week now and am constantly getting sidetracked (now I'm getting ready to move on top of everything else). I'm sorry!

    THANK YOU GUITARMAN! YOU ROCK!

Any other "undocumented" tips/tricks we might find helpful? <wink>

I have a question about the different ways to hook up a DVD Recorder.
I have never used anything except the regular RCA cables. Can any
of the three types of cables be used, or are the Component and S-video
for something else other than regular operation.
If either can be used. What is the difference? The standard RCA,
and the Component cables look the same except for the color.
Can they be interchanged? Which is best?

    Thanks

I'm not sure about component, but S-Video works nicely. As long as you remember that S-Video only carries the video signal, and you will still need to use the audio RCA jacks to hear anything.

I bought the $98 ILO DVD recorder at Walmart four days ago. I used Maxell DVD+R's in it. When I tried to play the first disc I recorded, it came up as a "bad disc". So tried again, and recorded 2 more discs(copying old VHS tapes from the VCR). They recorded fine and finalized. They played back well on the ILO.

But, as I have read in earlier posts on this thread, they would not play properly on my Cyberhome(CH DVD 300) player. They would play a little, freeze up and go to the next chapter and do the same thing. The Cyberhome is supposed to be able to play both -R and +R. It's interesting to see that others have had similar problems.

The ability for the recording to play on other players is important, so this ILO went back to Walmart today for a refund. I know how to read and follow instructions, so if it doesn't work as it should, I'm not interested in figuring out why.

    I think I'll try a DVD-R, DVD-RW recorder next.

Did you reset to system defaults before trying the upgrade?
