Ok, I am kinda leary now. I just got a Ilo Progressive Scan DVD Recorder, DVDR 05 for christmas. After reading all the post on here, I checked an I have an MU. Has anyone had any good reports from this? I am almost scared to hook it up lol. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Any upgrades or hacks would also be appreciated. Seeing as though I want to copy some of my store boughten movies for my father. Thanks and Happy Holidays to all. Wendy
it really seems to be a hit or miss thing..... try it, it may work for you. i hope it does. good luck
Thanks, I am gonna hook it up just as soon as I get a day off of work. =o) I hope it works also Wendy
Been awhile since I posted here, and I'm amazed at the number of people continuing to purchase anything branded "ILO" after the months and months of complaints logged just here -- I guess you thought the rest of us were either kidding, morons, or morons-who-were-kidding. So be it. My point for posting now is two/three-fold: 1. My Magnavox MRV660 DVD Recorder (currently around $130) is STILL kissing my behind even after seven+ months of nearly six-hours-a-day non-stop recording. I've had around 20 error-ed DVDs, most of which were el-cheapo Nexxtech (Circuit City) discs, or RW discs that didn't erase as expected and later failed. There was also a spindle of Philips DVDs (also from Circuit City) that wouldn't work in the PC OR the recorder that got unhappily and quickly returned. Big whoop. Considering my successful, finalized, tested on other machines DVD pile is around 500, I'm happy with only 20 coasters. My only complaint about this machine is the remote -- it sends commands too quickly, and sometimes manually inserting chapter markers happens twice at once -- on the other hand, I CAN manually insert chapters so why am I complaining? LOL! The ILO 05 does not even have this feature. Magnavox is highly recommended by me. 2. Box up your ILO 05 units and return them. Period. If you don't have the receipt they'll at least give you store credit so you can buy some Pakistan shirts or Zimbabwe tampons. Christmas is an especially good time to do this -- they simply don't care. Leave the box at home, they won't care. Douse the 05 recorders with lighter fluid, strike a match, they won't care (and you'll get credit for the lighter fluid as well). 3. Once you've returned your ILO 05 recorders, go to Radio Shack or OfficeMax (the only two I've confirmed are carrying these), and buy the following: (my comments are below the monster-link) http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...tId=2032057&kw=dvd+recorder&parentPage=search These units are new, they're multi-branded depending on which store you find one at, but they all look like the picture in the link. THESE UNITS ARE LITE-ON RECORDERS, AND THEY'RE RUNNING AROUND $100!!! I am by no means saying you're gonna see the words "LITE-ON" on these units, but if they look like that pic they ARE! Your sure-fire clues are that they record on both +/- media and the menus are reminiscent of the old ILO 04 recorders from Satan's Clearance Outlet (Wal-Mart). TRUST ME ON THIS -- no display on the box and YOU WON'T CARE! I'll collect all the various brands this unit is being sold under and update as necessary. Radio Shack and OfficeMax for now. Thank me later. D.
everybody has their opinions....... i like my 05zu and will keep it thanks. you said: I guess you thought the rest of us were either kidding, morons, or morons-who-were-kidding. So be it. just because people are still buying the 05's, doesnt mean any of that. what it sounds like to me is you are saying your opinion is the only one that counts and everyone else is wrong...... i wouldnt lie to you, my 05zu works fine. i say if you have a 05zu or mu or are going to buy one, by all means give the ILO a fair shake, I like mine, and I also like my ILO mp3 player too, so ILO is a pretty good brand in my opinion especially for what you pay for it. Just remember when you buy an ILO 05, save your packaging and receipts just in case, and read these forums for any dvd brand compatibility posts. That would have been helpfull for me when I first bought mine, I wouldnt have so many costers now if I had done that.
Thanks for all the replies everyone. **For one thing I never called anyone a moran or assumed anyone was. I stated I received this as a christmas gift and wanted some postitive reveiws on it. I read all the negatives dont need to see any more lol. That being said Thanks to all of you for responding on this for me. And I am truley sorry someone thought I was playing a name game. Happy Holidays All Wendy
I have read many of the posts here and I felt I needed to try and balance things out a bit. For starters, not everyone reads posts prior to purchasing, so it is unfair to call them morons for buying the product. Next, we all know that someone who is unhappy with a product is far more likely to spread the negative word compared to someone who is pleased with a product. I recently purchased a new car battery from Walmart and didn't feel like I needed to post my positive experience on a website. The same is true of my hunting rounds and hand warmers. As for these units, I would say that they must work well enough for Walmart to continue to sell them. Seriously, if they're getting 50% of them returned, then they're obviously not going to make money selling them. And considering the price and their market share of other commodities, I'm certain they've sold hundreds of thousands if not millions of them. So I would say that their satisfaction rating is considerably higher than 50%. We all know there are defects in every product and some have gotten bad units, but I do believe that most problems are user error. Nothing personal guys, but I'm certain most problems have been solved over the phone and again these don't make it to the website. Mine works fine (05MU) and I'm very happy to have it. I have one of the original DVD players from about 12+ years ago and I am amazed that the DVD's burned on the ILO do in fact play on this unit. I have not fully tested the ILO, but I have not come across any failed experiments. Certainly a more expensive unit will have more functionality and features, but I wasn't willing to spend $300 on this. I simply wanted to be able to record shows from my DVR for future use. I reject the notion that because something is built in America that it is being done so with "skilled" labor or if something is built elsewhere it is being done with "un-skilled" labor. It is intellectually lazy to believe such a thing. Walmart epitomizes what America is all about nowadays. We’re all about getting the best deal possible and we quite frankly wouldn’t spend $500 for the ILO if it were built here. That is why it’s built in China. Everyone whines about the jobs leaving the country, but then we all rush off to Walmart to buy a 32” television for $240 and a DVD recorder for $98. I’ve been out of the country and I’ve seen what we have here and I would much rather give a job to someone in China or Mexico than to some of the schleps we have here. But I’m getting off track. I would say buy it and it if makes you feel better, keep the receipt and box and you won’t go wrong. Expect some trial and error as this is more complicated than making a pot of coffee.
Wow, Sam Walton just did cartwheels in his grave. If Wal-Mart is "what America is all about..." then I officially renounce my citizenship here. If monopolizing a market to the point where worldwide economic outlook is based on YOU, and if all those jobs YOU created happened because YOU shut down an entire city and FORCED all those people to work for YOU when you opened, then welcome to Communism. Plain and simple. What an assinine thing to say on a board where so many of us are warning others not to buy a piece of electronic equipment. I mean damn. I don't recall anyone saying that ILO recorders were bad because they weren't made in the U.S. -- they're bad because THEY'RE CRAP -- and having been through three of them myself (two MU units and one ZU), most of you reading this loving these little hunks of garbage right now will experience failure. Soon. If you have $100 to waste, go for it. Toss the receipts, the box, in fact go build a new entertainment/home theater wing onto your house just to showcase the ILO-05 DVD recorder. Enjoy. Most of us don't have $100 to flush down the public restroom toilets at Wal-Mart but if you do then congratulations! Those of us firing off the warnings (and alternatives) are only trying to help those of YOU doomed to be left holding 20-30 unfinalized and unusable "BAD DISCS" a month or six down the line when your 05 either forgets what DVDs are, or overheats itself into oblivion. It will happen to 98% of you and I am unanimous in that (LOL). What you're forgetting is (1) anything branded "ILO" failed quality inspections and functionality tests (by CyberHome or Lite-On, for example) and got sold to Wal-Mart/Sam's Club for literally CENTS on the dollar and rebranded and sold at full price. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule. This is how they operate today. And (2) When you return one of these recorders to Wal-Mart, guess what happens? If it's "ILO" branded it gets put right back on the shelf for re-sale. All three of my returns (and all were returned because they stopped working, as noted on my refund slips) within an hour were back on the shelf. I watched, waited, and saw it happen. The final one wasn't even bothered to have it's box re-taped. Nice huh? And just a little MORE "FYI", if and when it gets returned a SECOND time, then it gets marked down for clearance. How dare anyone blame ILO problems on "user error" after all of these warnings from all of these different people. How frigging dare you?! You just effectively told the rest of us that we wasted our time trying to help YOU, and you insulted us while you did it. Nice. My final thoughts on this are (1) you were warned; and (2) you'll remember this little debacle down the road when you wish you had your $100 back. You have options now, you won't later. P.S. MERRY CHRISTMAS! Something else you didn't get with your ILO recorder.

I couldnt agree less. My ILO 05zu works as good today as it did the day I bought it. as does my other ILO products. Now either I got lucky the first time with all my ILO products or I am lying to you all, and I dont lie, and you got unlucky all three times. Either way I like my ILO and I will keep it, you may have noticed with all my posts that I gave reviews on either side of the argument.... something you didnt do with your "This product is CRAP" attitude, so you failed to try to help us as you said you did. I have said it many times before, buy it or dont buy it. return it or dont return it, what ever you do is up to you. Mine works fine and has for going on a year now, so I will keep it Thank you very much.....
GoofusKAC: Let me clarify something. We in America always want the best deal and we negotiate and comparison-shop. Competition keeps prices low and it keeps vendors honest. That is the American way and it is a spawn of Capitalism and free markets. The reality is that we must approve of what Walmart does because we (as Americans) continuously spend our money there and along the way we get things cheaper and cheaper. If we didn’t and they were such a monster, then we wouldn’t go there and the government would break them up. I don’t support how Walmart conducts their business and I don’t care to get into that at this time. My only point was that we go there because this is America and because we want to spend the least amount as we have to. That’s way they’ve gotten as big as they have on the consumer end anyways. What they’ve done to their vendors and those who worked for them is another thing and doesn’t relate to the ILO recorder. As for people not having $100 to flush down the toilet, I would say that the ILO is the perfect recorder for them. Because if they barely have the $100 then they certainly don’t have $300 either. I’m surprised you don’t see that and understand the attraction of the ILO. You were obviously not pleased with yours and that is fine. You had a recourse and you took it and you ultimately got satisfaction. But don’t brand those of us who are happy with it or those of us who cannot afford a more expensive model as idiots for doing what we want or have to do. My impression of these forums is that it’s for people to exchange information. Not for people to sway the masses into believing what they want them to believe. You and I disagree and I respect your opinion. But please don’t insult me because you don’t like what I have to say. I came here for information on the unit itself not to be insulted because I actually liked it. Useful information that I found and have been able to confirm is that certain disks work better than others. Memorex was the first I purchased and it worked spectacularly well. I then purchased a cheaper OfficeMax brand ($15 for 100 CD+R’s) and found them to not work at all and will return them. It was helpful to find that others have encountered this as well. As for user error, I stand behind that. No offense, but lets not assume that everyone actually knows 100% what they’re doing. Seriously, I have run through the same thing myself with the cd writer in my computer years ago where I tried putting too much data on the disk and was informed that I wouldn’t have enough space to finalize it. I understand that concept, but how many others do or have had that experience. It is still user error no matter how you look at it? Or how many others in these posts didn’t know they actually had to finalize the disk? How would they know that when they didn’t have to do it to their VHS tapes? That, my friend, is the purpose of these boards. And I don’t think it’s an insult to say it’s user error. That means there is hope for your machine to work right once you figure it out. Think about it… For those of you who are really here for information I hope that you can wade through all of this non-information. Again my view is that for $100, if you save your receipt and box, you shouldn’t have any problems. You might have to return it, but I highly doubt it. And if you do, then you will ultimately get a good one. One that will do what you need it to do. There may be some compatibility issues with the DVD’s but those are returnable as well. And if you need help figuring out how to work it, there are plenty of people here who can assist you with your troubles.
I bought a ILO DVDR05ZU for myself for Christmas and when I first brought it home, I hooked everything up, my tv doesn't have the rv inputs, so I have to use an rf modulator to hook the dvd recorder up, but I hooked up the cable/vcr/tv/dvd recorder fine and recorded an old tv show from vhs to dvd just fine. Now today, for some reason it won't work. I have a tv show episode on a vhs that I'm trying to record to dvd, but when I push play on the vcr and have the dvd recorder source set to tuner, the screen on the tv turns blue, I can hear the audio of the show on the vhs tape, but there's no picture. But the weird thing is when I push pause or fastforward/rewind on the vcr, the picture shows up! So does anyone know what could be wrong?
I have a 05 ZU unit and besides turning itself on quite a bit it has been a decent unit. Yesterday, it quit recording half way through a hour long program I was recording off of my Tivo. No warning, just quit recording. I am positive I had set it up properly for recording the program I have so far recorded 50 good discs in a row with no coasters with this unit and if this is just a fluke I wont worry about it too much, but if it is going to start doing it with more and more I need to look at my options. Has anyone else had this issue and if so did it do any good to call their tech support? This is my third unit from wally world and I am not sure if they would take it back since it has been more than 90 days. Besides, I am afraid of getting another unit that will act up worse like my first 2 did. Thanks for any constructive advice!
i have never had an issue like that however it does turn itself on randomly for some reason, although i have to admit, it hasnt for a month or so. I would say count it as a bad disk, and start over. I dont know, Mine has never cut out on me in the middle of a recording, however it has given me the odd bad disk error in the middle of a recording
I will have to wait and see if it turns out to be a bad disc,as I have not finalized it yet. I had not thought of that silly me I backed the program up and restarted it as a second entry on the disc, and it recorded the second half just fine. I was going to put more on it but will go ahead and finalize and see if it is going to be a bad disc. Thanks!! ..................................................................... EDIT I finalized and it came out fine. GO figure. Oh well one glitch in 50 discs isnt too bad I suppose
