Some TV programs come out with a lot of "video noise" on the top of the screen when playing back on my laptop...there is a horizontal line at the top of the picture. Like some X-Files episodes from my DVR.

But, Star Wars III-Revenge of the Sith came out with a good picture in 3-hour mode-no "horizontal line" problems, although some of the sound is warbly, especially on the end title. I put Fantastic Four and Spider-Man II on the same DVD in 4-hour mode with good results.

The worst results are when you record in 6-hour mode an old VHS tape that is also in 6-hour mode. It's very grainy and the picture wobbles at the top when playing it back on my laptop in fullscreen. But no wobbling in 6-hour mode if it's from my DVR, and less graininess. But again, you do get an occasional horizontal line at the top of the picture.

Well,I decided to go to w-mart and see if I could find an 04 an lo n behold found a display model;took it home and did the hack, got extra time for recording, got mthe ability to copy all of my copyright protected dvd's that are wearing out,and now I have about 75 vhs tapes backed up and I don't have to worry about losing everything that was on vhs---I still have my 05 and I'll keep it unless the opportunity comes along that I would be able to get an 04. I haven't had any problems of overheating, scratchy noise,or any of the other listed by other people!
I'm happier than a pig rolling in his own excrement!

Dont take what some people are saying as fact.... My o5 has great sound and it has never overheated, or even hinted at overheating.....
Dont get me wrong, if I could get an 04 I would but not as a replacement for the 05, but more for playing around with....

OK...some months ago I purchased an 05 when they first came out....if you check back I think you'll find me as one of the first taking it back because of the heating problems. It wasn't just warm....you could fry eggs on it! I kept my eye out for an 04 but never found one.....so I lost intrest. A friend of mine purchased an 05 about 2 weeks ago and called me up and wanted to show me his New recorder, it was cheap and it worked great (he said). I went over after he had run it for several hours and it was warm....not hot, plus he had made several recordings with no problems. The kicker is that he purchased it only to copy several home made dvd's that he had recorded on RAM dvd in his (high end)panasonic dvd recorder that would only play on the same panasonic- this was the only way he could make copies. He will have no further use for the ilo when he is done with this project. Based on his good fortune with this unit I'm going to buy it from him after he gets done with it - as he has seemed to have found a good one

I hope it works for you. I have read that over heating is an issue with this model, but I hve to wonder if the overheating is mainly in older 05's or if maybe you just got a bad unit...... I will admit, mine does get a little warm, but no warmer that the back of my tv or vcr.....

WELL,HERE I AM AGAIN; I HAD THE 05,BUT RAN INTO A PROBLEM:COULDN'T GET IT TO COPY SOME OF THE COPY PROTECTED TAPES THAT I HAD SO I WANDERED BACK INTO W-MART AND FOUND THE LAST 04 SITTING AS A DEMO AND RATHER SNEAK-ILY RE-BOXED IT UP,PAID FOR IT AND NOW AFTER DOWNLOADING THE HACK FOR IT AM HAPPILY COPYING MY COLLECTION OF VHS TAPES--ALL TOTALLED APPXLY 300 TAPES SO FAR-ABOUT 60 OF THE OLDER TAPES W/05,250 OR SO W/04.
HAVE FOUND ON PROBLEM SO FAR; "SOME" OF THE DVD'S PRODUCED FROM THE 04 HAVE NO SOUND WHEN PLAYED ON THE 05,WORK FINE IN THE 04 ON PLAYBACK AND WORK FINE IN AN OLDER G.E. PLAYER. ANY THOUGHTS?

strange....... not sure what to make of that, unless the dvd types being used are not the same.... the 05 seems to like +, what does the 04 like? I dont know, since I dont have an 04. But if they play fine in every other dvd player, than I wouldnt consern yourself to much with whether they play on the 05 well or not.

the 05 is a buggy model its a cyberhome in otherwords it didnt pass tests to be called a different system. there are only a few companys that make certin things. the brand comes from how good the final inspection tests turn out. the 05 model has problems with overheating since it has no cooling fan. wile it is in use the circutes get more and more damaged. more than licely the audio part is going bad on yours if it doesnt play some of ur dvds

I tried three ILO DVDR05s but none of them worked.

The first one had abysmal sound quality on anything it recorded. The sound would "warble' and fluctuate through things recorded through both AV inputs and with different sources, most noticable with background horns section music. I took it back and bought a Sony GX315 to replace it, even though the Sony was $91 more.

But I exchanged the ILO DVDR05 for a new one at Wal-Mart, figured I'd use it as a backup DVD recorder on another TV. This time, it was hooked up directly to a coaxial antenna cable instead of the AV Input(s). The warble sound seemed to be gone but there was a constant hum on all channels and this sound was translated to all DVD recordings. I hooked the I ILO DVDR05s up to another TV and the constant hum was still there.

But I exchanged this second ILO DVDR05 for a new (third) one at Wal-Mart, and it and had the same problem. So I took the third one back and asked for a refund.

Other problems I had is that I could not get the virtual keyboard to work, where you can name a title of a recording.

One thing I liked about the ILO DVDR05 is that it seems to be the only DVD recorder that can record through the DV (IEEE1394) in the Timer mode. Some of the new cable boxes have firewire out (AKA iLink, DV…). If only it had better sound quality.

As a backup unit, I bought a Samsung DVD-R320 combination DVD Recorder/VCR and it seems to work great. Costs about $60 more than the ILO DVDR05 standalone DVD recorder.

I have had 2 ILO DVDR05's for about a half-year now and have had good luck with mine.

I have found out recently that the DVD decoder software also has an effect on the DVD's readability. I recently switched my laptop (a Toshiba Tecra 8200, Windows 2000 generation) from Direct DVD to Power DVD. Direct DVD would read about 80% of the DVD +R's produced, whereas Power DVD reads 100% of them. My laptop still won't read DVD+RW's, although my desktop computer will (with a Lite On DVD Burner).

I have bought a cheap Phillips DVD player that also reads Divx and DVD+/-R and +/-RW, and use it on the second set of inputs to my ILO. I can convert Divx and DVD+RW and other disks to DVD+R easily with this combination.

Here's my SOLUTION. Hopefully this will be of help to many who purchased this piece of garbage! I just bought an Ilo dvd05 at walmart this past friday. I had tons of memorex 8x dvd+rs and formatted 7 on the ilo and AFTER the movie was completely recorded (from cox cable) I tried to finalize and the dvd recorder said "unable to finalize; disc bad".

I didn't want to waste anymore +rs so I decided to just EXPERIMENT with my GQ DVD-Rs. Guess what? They worked, BUT I could NOT play them on OTHER dvd players. I THEN downloaded the upgrade to flash the REAR of the ilo. I recorded three more cable tv movies on memorex dvd+rs and only 1 worked out of the three worked on the ilo or my other dvd players, HOWEVER ALL OF MY GQ DVD-Rs worked!!! All of them! I've burned on 13 GQ dvd-rs so far and all of them finalize and all work on other players! My specific GQ dvd-rs are 8x (not the 1-8x) and they're the ones that are silver on top. DVD Decrypter identifies them as Sony. I don't plan to take this unit back now. It uses the cheapest media I get buy. Nothing is cheaper than GQ. The fact that all documentation says it only uses DVD+R is WRONG.

How can you buy something that don't record or playback stereo??? That also means no surround.

I was just listening to an ILO DVDR05-produced DVD +R of music videos from VH1 Classic on my laptop to check the stereo (with earplugs), an it's definitely coming through in stereo.

It's the built-in tuner that is not stereo, but you have 2 sets of of inputs that are stereo (yellow, red, and white plugs). My inputs are hooked up to stereo sources, which have their own stereo tuners.

BAck again; Have had 2 different iLO 05's they had problems so I took them back(still have my 04),replaced them with a cyberhome dvr 1200,this from w-mart also but I ran into a problem with it also(4 different machines)various problems from overheating to not reading ANY disk inserted. Finally told the sales folks on the floor to quit giving me the returned machines and got a good one----NOW!!! any one know of any hacks to get rid of MV from this machine? So far what I have noticed is that it reads writes to dvd + or - r/rw,seems to have good quality!
BTW,earlier I had posted that I had had a problem with dvd's recorded on my 04 not playing on my Brother-in-laws 05,still have that problem but he won't listen to me and return/exchange his, so--oh well!
For the amt of money that I have spent $98+ on my 05,$70 for the Cyberhome 1200,I feel that I have spent my money as wisely as I could

again!! I just read another post--I'm old n read slow so for many of you-don't type so fast!!! I just realized that when I record some of my vhs tapes I set everything up,start recording then go to bed-get up in the morning and finalize my disc any check it--works every time and have not had a coaster yet! Thanks everyone
I'had this 1200 in line and recording for a few days now and I've a couple of problems but not with the recorder; I was getting a bad picture and some bad sound quality, not enough to really get upset about but enough to bug me and what I eventually figured out was that my connections from the recorder to the modulator were not tight enough and were"wobbling" enough to cause some "bad" sound and picture, took a pair of pliers and mashed the ends together (tightening) the fitting and so far that has solved my problems. Hope this might help someone!
    pps: I use imation 8x dvd+r/rw,-r/rw on this machine(cyberhome 1200)

I told all you folks about my Ilo dvd05 problems. I wrote Ilo Customer Service Dept and told them my unit finalizes dvd-rs, but has a problem with many DVD+rs. I was concerned that if I CONTINUE to use dvd-rs that I would destroy my unit or void the warranty. Here's a portion of their response to me:

... we do not officially support DVD -R format but if they work for you, please keep going.

See below for more disc-related information. i recommend our latest
    firmware.
    -herm / Customer Service

    Dear Customer,

The iLO recorder DVD R05 is not compatible with Dual Layer formats. Several
of our users have reported errors in formatting, recording and finalizing
when they use Memorex, Maxell, TDK, or iLO DVD +R discs.

Please consider using other brands of discs. We have found that discs like
Verbatim, Fujifilm, Sony, Taiyo, Ridata, Ritek have been working very
    consistently.

The whine coming through my tv speakers is enough to make me return the recorder, which I will do tomorrow. It's an absurd defect, and is recorded onto the discs, as well.

ps - Just tried playing some test discs on other players/tv sets, and not only is the whining sound very obvious, the picture quality is lousy, even at the 1 hour "HQ" setting. hah.

I bought this early in the year 2005 maybe march but my brother just bought one and the menu and everything is different so I think they package the 06 model in 05 boxes plus on the box it says the 05 takes Triple a's but it has a watch battery and in the manual it even says that.

But I have tried -r's in this recorder and too my surprise it works plus I can use all media -r's +r's -rw's and +rw's work in this unit for some reason so if for some reason I am not suppose too please add info.
