What does ripping a DVD actually do?

What is the best program for DVD ripping?

Ok ripping a DVD is the same as ripping a CD.

Im pretty sure the term came from "ripping Off"

With DVDs the ripping process involves copying the DVD to your computer and removing serveral things like CSS encoding, Macrovision, and Region Coding. They are all screwed up anti-piracy measures which prevent you from doing things with your DVDs.

Once ripped you will have a copy of whatever DVD on your computer which you can watch with Apples DVD player, or some such equivelent (choose open 'VIDEO_TS folder' from the file menu).

The best program by miles is "DVD Backup". However if you have troubles with it try 0Sex.

You should find them in a Google search.

Of course once ripped you can compress them and burn them so you can watch them in you domestic dvd player (which is far more convienient). However this is where things start to get tricky and you are likely to run into problems.
