I was supporting your view on cost and taking it a step further. Aienware makes some pretty good machines, and for those who want speed, have the money, and aren't into building they're a fair choice. Common sense however should tell them to look for a builder if they want to have it all for less.

Thats interesting the one i have has a lot more than the alien ware i jave the fx 57 2 7800gtx as opposed to 6800,s 2 gig of memory 800 gig hard drive xp office and a 19in tft for about $50 less than the alienware plus i get 3 yrs on site warrenty so maybe it actually cheaper to buy pcs here lol makes a nice change as your always cheaper in the US for most things, i actually configured the alien ware up to almost the same spec as my evesham and it came to
    $6,586.00 as low as $198/mo.*
Price is before all applicable rebates.
so i dont know what to say as mine is over $2,000 cheaper here in the UK plus you would need to add on a decent 19 in TFT monitor so your looking at over $7,000 which seems pretty expensive compared to mine at $4,700 plus whatever xp office would cost as its not listed on the alienware site as an add on. So maybe better to buy here and shop over to the US

I priced your listed specs on the site you gave and came up with a 5800 dollar machine.
The Aurora is the closest Alienware with the same specs at 5300 dollars.
You can't compare the ALX to the desktop you listed. It is a higher end machine all around.

As far as I'm concerned, the 3500+ is a 'decent' processor. The majorty of PCs in existance today have a slower processor than that. I may overclock it at some point, but only when I feel it necessary, and only after at least a year of having it, so I don't break my promise.
Given this, is it worth specifying XMS4400 RAM instead of standard PC3200? an extra £92 is quite a lot, and I'm not sure I'd be able to do it.

The 3500+ is an overclockers dream. It is expected of you.
In any case, XMS memory would be a very good investment.

A small 200-300 mhz overclock barely even registers on the scale. It seems silly to waste that much horspower by running it at 2.2g.

700 GB is about right for Windows 2010. He is thinking ahead.
Actually 700 isn't that much by todays standards if you do anything with video and backup your files and play games ect...

I'm a pack rat. I keep everything. It builds up.
I still have my old Key Resume program backed up. The floppy is gone.
I still use the program every once in a while.

HDs are so cheap it doesn't make sense not to have multiple redundant storage units. To risky to just have a 160g drive to depend on.

XMS 4400 sounds like it might be DDR2 and if you're using AMD it's imcompatible.

Speaking of deleting I have almost a dozen DVD's on my hard disk I need to deal with.

Wouldn't you know it, I just upgraded to Nero 7.0 for $49.95 and then I go to check the price on the AMD 4400+ and not only is it's price dropped to $497, but they're throwing in Nero 7.0 Ultra edition with it. Fortunatley I'm not going to do the build until Christmas holidays, maybe the price will have dropped a bit more by then.

while you ripped on Intel above - just remember - Intel's more OC'able
3.00Ghz to 3.66Ghz stock cooling and voltage. Let me see you do that with a modern AMD

    To All,
As those of you who follow this thread know I am planing to build a new Super system. I looked in Newegg to see what the prices run for the GeForce 7800 PCIx. There are so many different manufacturers that make this chipset's video card. How do I know which card is the best? The only big companies that I've heard of are Asus and MSI. I also see that some of the core speeds are different, from 400 to 480. Would this be part of the criteria? As per Sophocles suggestion I am going to build an AMD Dual Core 4400+ w/Asus A8N-SLI Premium MB and max memory.

    Thanks in Advance

The performance should be good on all the 7800 models but the off brand manufacturers have reliability issues.

The 20% overclock is good for a p4 but the new AMDs are getting 30-40%. My Athlon 64 3200 2.0 ghz runs easily at 2.7 ghz. With extra voltage it goes higher.
