I have a private budget and so does my wife. We are both employed and both making above average wages. she spends her budget on frivolous items and I save to spend mine for!!!!!!!!! Well you know. LOL

In reality my wife and I have gotten along well for years. However at times it might be hard to prove. LOL

I was kidding, of course you and your wife get along. When she's asleep your awake and when she's awake you're asleep, no time to talk, no time to argue. LOL

Okay! This is weird, I've been testing my memory settings all evening and I'm getting some strange results. If you look at this memory bench you'll ask "what happended to the top mark and then you'll look at the floating point bench and you'll think! WTF?

I haven't a clue but my memory has been gaining on both top and bottom scores and I don't know why. If I take several samples they will vary from good to really out there. I think that it's the dual cores alternating their measures and scores which when high are freakish. I can tell when to test by my graphical response to opening and closing applications such as Firefox.

    Novicebb,
I do quite a bit of video work. I like to do video editing where you put parts of some movie together with parts of others. Just for fun. I also do a fair amount of encoding DVDs. I've been around computers for about 20+ years and in the old days they were very expensive. I've always wanted to build a state of the art computer but the price was always too high. Today you can do it for less than a 40 MB hard drive and a 13" color monitor cost back in the mid to late 80s.

I have an Intel 3.0/HT P4 Prescott with an Asus MB and 1GB Ram (see my sig). Because of the advances in technology I can now watch high quality DVDs with Dolby surround sound with better quality than any HD TV. The computer individualy controls each and every pixel on screen to a degree that HD can't match. I have a complete Dolby PLII Stereo system to listen to a virtual library of music. I can communicate with the rest of the world and have discussions with "friends" from everywhere. Realisticly, I've acomplished this for under $1000 (USD)

In truth, I've had a lot of fun. I've come to know a great bunch of people and most of all I've learned a great deal that will continue to benefit me well into the distant future.

My next build will easily cost twice what my present system did. It will definatly be an AMD. Why??? AMD gives you more bang for the buck. Not that it is cheaper, but it is better. Think of it this way. If AMD can do the same work at 2.2Ghz that an Intel can do at say 3.4 (just a generalization) then the design just has to be better and nore efficient. I just want to be a part of the new revolution. Intel is being forced back to the drawing board for the first time in their history by a superior product. For the first time, Intel will have to follow instead of lead. When AMD wins in court Intel may even become #2. Intel dictated and made the rules for far too long. Now AMD has redefined the rules and it's a whole new ballgame!

    Sincerely,
    theonejrs

    baltekmi,
You have spent some time reading our old posts. Problem is that you didn't learn anything along the way. You are rude and don't seem to care. If I had the power, I would ban you from this group as you don't seem to have any idea what this group is all about.

It is all about a vast wealth of knowlege that is shared by all. It is about discussion over differences and opinions. It is about learning and sharing that wealth of knowlege. It's about agreement and disagreement for the benefit of all who read this group.
Want to do something usefull? Go back and read the entire thread as I recently did. See where we started, where we've been, how we got there and what we all have learned along the way. If you can do that and not gain a little humility, then you didn't learn a thing! Just don't waste our time chewing on our collective legs.

I was totally unaware the 3700+ was so little more than the 3500+. I always stayed away from recommending it to people in the UK because it was quite a bit more. In fact it's currently £14.24 more here, not as much as it used to be, but i cant help but notice you mentioned it only being $14 more! Something not right here...

The San Diego core dropped and a faster pace than the Venice core did. The truth is that they're the same processor with different L2 cache. There are rumors that the Venice core over clocks better than the San Diego does and that the added speed gives it an advantage. But I don't believe it and if I were to purchase a single core today then I would go with the San Diego.

I was interested by that THG article on 65nm and 45nm CPUs, the concept of an 8-core 64-bit server processor on 45nm at the turn of the decade seems mindblowing. All really depends on what sort of clock speed and performance they can get out of those things, If they're limited to like 2Ghz then it won't be so good, but I wouldn't mind betting that 45nm would enable for some big speeds, assuming the architecture is efficient.

I'm betting that you're right on speeds, maybe 5 Ghz and above. A few years ago I read an article that estimated that artificial intelligence would need processors running at 5 Ghz. My thoughts are that we'll have as many as 8 cores on a single die running at that speed and we still won't reach the level of silicon sentience.

I don't really agree with artificial intelligence. Might seem superstitious but if we have computers that can think to the extent of our knowledge we'd need VERY advanced software and hardware, and then we'd end up with an I-robot situation, no kidding. Computers will control everything by the time processors are fast enough to let them think for themselves properly (I'd say you'd need 20Ghz total to get a good reasonable though engine going. However, all this means is 4 5Ghz cores). Everything from cars down to your garden shears will be controlled by a computer. If you're 10Ghz Garden shears decided they don't like you anymore, you get beheaded. If your car decides it's had enough, off it goes, you wake up one morning and you're cars gone, it's not stolen, it's run away. Or worse, commit suicide with you in it.
It's a nice idea, but you just couldn't afford to risk it really.

LOL. Artificial intelligence is going to happen but we'll still be in charge. It will simply mean that we'll have PC's that can make decisions, judgement calls, and learn but not become a life form.
