There is some thermal paste on the cooler right? Every time you change a cooler, it's thoroughly recommended to remove the existing thermal material and add new stuff. Doesn't sound like you did that..

Yeah, lower power CPUs like the Celeron D can go with passive cooling and no thermal paste change but AMD dual cores tend to spike in temp if you don't do it properly. They're usually pretty toasty without proper contact with the heat sink.

Sounds like all you might need is some new thermal paste. Again, I recommend Arctic Silver 5. Also your software might be having wrong readings and shutting it down even if the temps aren't that high. Try to re-seat the heat sink with some arctic silver.

Turn on the PC and leave it in the BIOS at that screen for 10-15 minutes if you can. if by that time, the CPU is well under 40C, then you shouldn't have a cooling issue.

the highest that the cpu temp went to was 36c so it looks like i have no heat issues

You should be fine. Ignore the software, as long as there are no untoward crashes or sudden restarts you'll be fine.

    Redice,
You might try a different program like SpinFan or if that's what you are allready using there are others. Just do a Google Search as there's lots of them around. One time i was running speed fan with the AsusProbe was still loaded and the alarm went off! 153/F! Scared the hell out of me and I rebooted and went straight to the bios. It was only 42C. If you try one that doesn't work well make sure any other program is taken out with the Add/Remove programs in the control panel and then re install it!

    Happy Computering,

    YAY FOR SAMMORRIS!

Anyhoo. had a heat spike and found my heat sink hadn't secured all the way into the bracket and popped back out. Reapplied Ye Olde Arctic Silver and made sure is was all secured. Running fine :)

Estuansis: Excellent stuff. Can't beat a bit of arctic silver.
Russ: Either, whichever you want! :)
