    sammorris,

I have no idea and I've questioned that one myself many times when people post the temps. in my case I think because we have a Swamp cooler in the front of the house and AC back here that it,s caused by the humidity and the evaporative process in removing that humidity. Good air flow aids the cause too! I have a ceiling fan to help keep the air moving as well! I also went to great lengths to make the wires and cables as neat as possible for better air flow. I even dropped the 92mm front intake fan I had on the Prescott because it just isn't needed. Since it's the same case only black, the case isn't the answer either.

    Here's my temps while folding!

That's as high as it gets!!

Then show me!!! I've seen 5.1 on THG but thats absolute max and with Liquid Nitrogen too.

Those temperatures are absolutely mindboggling. 38ºC full load and no higher. My system's well above that before windows has loaded! In fact, my system probably idles at TWICE your CPU temperature. Given that most of your load temperature is the room temperature, goodkness knows how high that factor is.

    PeterG969,

Someone is pulling your leg or altering the test. Even Tom's Hardware only got to 5.1 and that wasn't stable enough to run benchmarks. Getting it there is one thing, being able to use it is quite another! I think the 3.64 I posted for a 3.0/800 Prescott is outstanding for that CPU. I'm happy with the 3.71 this one runs at. I ran Prime95 all night with no errors so I know I can depend on it! Temps are no problem but it will break down electricly like a leaky pipe if I push it much more

no i actually seen the picture of it saying 6ghz and all the tubes and that it was on the gamecube emulator forum (dolphin like last year)

Find me the link then I'll believe it. Besides it's irrelevant, you couldn't run anything like that anyway.

How far can you OC a P4?
How long is a piece of string.

All depends what you do. At the end of it (not the end of the day because that's a footballer's expression and I don't like it) it's down to how much you tweak, how good a mobo you have, how good your memory is, and how good your luck is. Each CPU will vary one to the next.

    sammorris,

The link would be about a year old and since I didn't think anything about it at the time I didn't save it.

A P4 is not an imfinate CPU, there are design/materials considerations. There are rules that apply to the design of any electronic componant. These are based on the quality of a given batch of silicone, the design parameters called for in the Initial design and the Manufacturing process type itself. Tom's Hardware pointed out that while they could clock it to 5.1, it wouldn't run stable enough to run the benchmarks. When you get right down to it, that makes the 5.1 meaningless as the processor won't run stable. What good is a 5.1 proc if it's not stable?

I've been doing a little more tweaking and I am now at 3.75. My memory now runs at 470MHz on a 940MHz fsb (native 235). Here's the benches!

    Cpuz

    Math

    Memory Bandwidth

I upped the CPU voltage to 1.312 and turned the bus up to 235MHz.

The memory benchmarks show how well my memory does compared to the top DDR2 chipsets running somewhat more exotic memory. The Math benchmark is compared to the Dual-Core Extreme edition Intel, the top 2 AMDs and the x2 3800+! I think I'll leave it right there as it runs great. I'll run Prime 95 overnight again and if there are no errors, I'll leave it alone. I prpbably could get it to 3.80 if I was willing to go higher on the voltage for both the CPU and the memory, but I'm not. 3.75 is good, starting from a 3.2. The numbers look very good too!!!

has anybody tried to see how the intel core duo in the laptop matches up to a p4

crowy, That's a 35% OC, something I couldn't do with a 3.2 because as the base CPU speed gets higher from one model to the next up, the percentage allowed decreases. Try running Prime95 on it and see if it runs without errors. I generally run it overnight and so far no errors or problems. I would guess that you are about done as I don't think there is much left.

Question! Did you raise the CPU and the Memory voltage? If so, how much? How are your CPU temps? I know AMDs are different when it comes to the Hyper transport which the Intels don't have so what are those settings? My 3.0/800 Prescott finaled out at a 22% OC at 3.64. I can only get about a 16% OC on my D940, but thats taking a 3.2 to 3.75! I could maybe get it to 3.8 but I think it fast enough as is. Besides, why tempt fate. I don't want to burn it out!

BTW, why are your sandra benches so hard to read???

    PERFORMANCE RATING 8104?????
    LOL. I get 3139.
Can you try de-themeing your XP so we can read those benches? I can read them but it's not easy.
2700mhz from a 3800+ is just LUDICROUSLY GOOD. You've just saved yourself something in the region of £400, or whatever that is in your currency.

why do you want to overclock your machine? and what for?
maybe for windows to load a few seconds faster not worth it.

    PeterG869,

It's more than loading windows a few seconds faster! All programs will run faster. It's great for bringing down your encoding times with RE/CCE. Even DVD Shrink times improve a good bit. I knocked 8 minutes off a known time for copying a 7.2GB DVD. I haven't had time to do a RB/CCE yet but I'm sure it will knock a good chunk off those times as well! Autocad runs much faster as well!

In another forum I belong to, we have a couple of people that bought the Intel D805, just to see what they could get out of a very cheap Dual-Core. At $120 (USD) and another $50 or so for a motherboard, it's worth it. It's also a learning experience (and a little competition) as well. It's also fun! You know, "Man vs Machine"!!! I'm very happy with how my D940 3.2 runs at 3.75. It's like I went out and bought a CPU costing a couple of hundred dollars more than the $260 I spent! Of course I'de have to overclock that as well!!!

Well no that's not really where the gain is (for that you need two raptors in RAID :D). You'd be surprised, a 35% overclock can get encoding a massive movie down from maybe 120 minutes to 90 minutes. Half an hour saved every time I encode a film is quite enticing for nothing. After all why do people buy faster CPUs? Its like upgrading but for free.
