    crowy,
Great minds think alike. I pulled the battery rather than use the shorting pins to clear the CMOS and it's still the same. I guess I'm about to find out just how good that 3 year warranty is! I've contacted Intel with the problem, and I can assure you that if they won't replace it, that's it for Intel. I won't even keep this one, as nice as it runs. I have burned up one CPU before and it was my mistake, but this is the first one ever that I am asking for a replacement for! Their cooler was defective. A lot is going to depend on how much crap they put me through too!! I have heard a few horror stories about their warranty policies, so we'll see!

    @theonejrs,
Are you able to lower the cpu voltage in the bios settings,IE:undervolt the processor to see if that slows the rapid temp increase down?
Maybe flash the bios to a later/earlier version?
Try the cpu on a different board if possible?
    Just some suggestions:)

    crowy,
The CPU voltage is at default which is the lowest setting. I didn't flash the BIOS but I did take it out and installed it back in the Dell it originally was in, Thermal shutdown!!!

It's all up to Intel now. I've never asked for a warranty replacement before this even though I could have once before, with a brand new Pentium OverDrive. I incorrectly put a jumper on the wrong terminals, and it fried the CPU. Even it's built in fan would no longer run! It was entirely my fault it burned up so I was honest and ate it! It's now a $150 paperweight on my desk. Like I said, this one wasn't my fault. It was running flawlessly for a couple of hours raging from 32C at idle to 47C loaded and I was setting it up for my roomate when the leg just went snap. It was on my desk so it wasn't kicked or anything like that!

Lol it was HILARIOUS. What were you on, something illegal?

Lol and alcohol even shows a minus 6000mhz!
That's almost as bad as Asus PC probe showing my CPU Fan doing 25000rpm!

Hey Theone, that really sucks, but what are you running to type and stuff? just asking. and i agree on the heat issues.. but does intel refund a overclocked processor? i herd that the retailers dont do that.. but this is comming from my dad.. :)
    talk to yall later,

They won't, but if I remember correctly this CPu wasn't overclocked at the time.

Circuit City is having a sale..Would appreciate a little feedback on these mem sticks,if anybody does or has used them
Kingston Technologies 512MB DDR SDRAM Desktop Memory (KVR400/512R)
    Price was: $89.99
    You save: -$25.00
    You pay: $64.99
    Mail-in rebate(s):-$35.00
    Price after rebate:$29.99'
I think I read somewhere, that certain mem reacts differently on diff. mobo
I want to add this to my
    Gigabyte GA-K8VM800M W/Semprom 3100+
Also thinking of O/C,although I've never done it before.I don't have a clue as to how to go about O/Cing.Guess ya gotta start somewhere

$65 still sounds a bit much for 512MB RAM even if it is Kingston, so make sure you get that rebate! $30 is pretty good if you do.

    However this stuff is better:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145026

If you're OCing, that's what you want. Kingston's pretty good, but for best OC results you want Corsair, OCZ or GelL. at $47 delivered, that isn't exactly bad.

Sempron 3100+s are known to be able to get 2.4Ghz, but for that you will need good RAM. Not sure how far your gigabyte motherboard would manage. You should be good for 20% with any old stuff though, as long as it isn't bargain basement ECS or Elixir stuff.. ugh <shivers>

I don't know anyone who's used that system because I'm in the UK and nobody offers rebates over here. I know newegg are good on their rebates, but I've no idea about Best Buy.

talking about heat lol i should be getting my new case fans tues. so heres how iam going to setup this case

    1. iam replacing both case fans front and back with 1200 rpm fans as you know both fans pull the air in and iam thinking the front fan should pull the air in and the back fan should blow the air out along with the Zalman 9500 blowing to the back of the case.the side fan thats mounted on the inside top that blows air out too should be ok like it is.heres the setup of my case

    http://www.lian-li.com/Product/Chassis/Middle_Tower/V_Cool/M_V_C_PC-V1000plus.htm

and the case fans i ordered

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835185005

if anyone has a better idea shoot away .keep in mind right now at idle my mobo is running 46c to 48c and the CPU is running about 45c to 47c

In at the front, out at the back is a tried and tested system that should work well. Well, it does for me! aD has shortened that first URL so I can't see it, the ... is included in the actual shortcut! While those casefans are expensive, they'll work wonders, high airflow, low noise, ticks both boxes!

Very snazzy setup, that really shouldn't have heat problems!

well whats happening is the two fans are fighting eachother being the Zalman blowing to the back of the case and the back case fan blowing air in. or how i set it up earlier the Zalman blowing towards the front of the case and the case fan pulling air in too either way its causing the case to hold to much hot air. in which case having both fans the Zalman and the back case fan blow to out (to the back of the case) should work. man i hope so or this setup i have just isnt going to work period

    aabbccdd,

I would try it the way it's supposed to be first, with both blowing in. As I just found out, it doesn't take much to hurt things, so be careful!

    Sammorris,

I don't think you can deal with airflow in this case in the conventional way because of the baffled zone design inside the case. If you change the direction it will screw up the airflow from the other 2 zones. Check the link he supplied for the airflow in his case and you will see what I mean. It's back a few pages! It's all designed around things working properly the way it's shown in the little demo Lian-Li has for the case air flow!

    To All,

Surprise, surprise! No problem with Intel. They will ship 2nd day Air the day they receive the old CPU & Cooler. Spent perhaps 15 minutes on the phone and most of that was with the Tech Rep. I have never aeen a cpu that would work for a few seconds and then quit, but was assured that this can happen, especially with the Prescotts. The way I understand it is that if certain instruction sets like throttling, built into the chip get damaged, you can have this problem.

    Sam,
Do you honestly believe that "I"..."Me" would do something like that? LOL I just started it kinda tongue in cheek and it just built and got away from me. Elvis didn't help either, yelling at me like that! Absolutely makes my day that you got to read it before it was removed. Now you know why I say I'm 62 going on 12!LOL It's the "child" in me!! He! He!

Actually I'm a pretty good writer (not speller) when I put my mind to it. As far back as 6th grade I wrote all my classes assembly plays I used to be an excellent speller but I've learned to rely too much on the spell checker. I may just start doing my posts in wordpad and spell check it before I copy and paste it to the forum.

    Sam,
Thanks for the kind words.. The only reason I knew you had read it was while the removed your reply post, it didn't remove the window message you get when you click on the post.

As far as Google toolbar goes, thanks but no thanks. I had it for a while and discovered a whole heard of pop-up adds along with it. When I got tired of being "Googled", I removed it. wordpad will work just fine until I can write a background spell checker for windows. Don't quite know if I am up to it though. I don't do much of that sort of stuff these days. We'll see!
