Is the intel 630 a good cpu? I just bought it...it was at a very good price...that's why...will it last me at least 5 years for video games? (of course I will overclock it to 5 Ghz..if needed and no it won't "explode" because I now have 5 fans (if you count the fans on the cpu/gfx card then I have 7 fans, when the day to overclock comes, I will also have water cooling...so, is 5 fans+water cooling, good?)

The real question tho is, is my cpu good? And just to settle the Intel vs. AMD "fight", according to the PC Gamer-Building Bible magazine (1 year old or something)...Intel's CPU is in third place for gaming, while in 1st place for video editing...while the athlon 64 fx is supreme for gaming...

    rick4556,
I'm using DVD Re-Builder with Cinema Craft Encoder. The quality is a lot better than DVD Shrink, but it takes longer. On your computer this program would take about 3 1/2 hours or more. That's why I didn't use it much with my Prescot

I rip the DVD using Fab Decrypter/AnyDVD, then process those files with RB/CCE and then burn it using Nero. The picture quality is excellent, way better than Shrink! DVD shrink usually takes about 12 to 16 minutes and is not as good.

    s3a,
The 630 is a single core CPU. That said, it can be overclocked to about 3.6 to 3.8. and you will need a top flite CPU cooler like a Zalman 9500. You won't ever see 4GHz even with water or liquid Nitrogen. It just won't run that fast. Why the 630 when the D920 Dual Core is less than $10 more and much faster?

theonejrs..OK..Well I don't really care for menus so I don't use DVD Re-Builder.But I do use MainConcept, which I think does everybit as good job if not better then Cinema Craft Encoder.I've never had a movie take more then real time
U have to ad 10mins to that for TMPGEnc DVD Author to convert to DVD,& another 10mins to burn
As with any video U can't really improve over & above what U already have in its original form.Hollywood puts it out in its truest form
Any way we are getting way off topic here.I REALLY COME HERE TO LEARN ABOUT O/Cing.Also just to get a heads up on diff systems,as I'm getting ready to put 1 together

So thats why you have'nt been on for a few days!
Iv'e been busy to helping a friend paint a house(not good fun,but the money means a Tuniq120 + G-Skill memory!!)It's amazing how a clean hard drive = faster everything.I'm guessing thats why the improvement in your dvd copy times.Iv'e got 3D mark 2001 here somewhere.Tommorrow I might give it a run and see what I get with this 6600.

    crowy,
Just download 3DMark03 and then we can have a direct comparisun between yours and mine. Just type in a search, 3Dmark03, download and you are ready to go. I tried 06 but I don't much like it or the way they score things. I get 1987 3DMarks with it. I'm very curious to see how well yours performs. As it blows the doors off of the 6800GS!

    @ s3a,

To answer your question whether the 630 is a good one... in short it's okay. If you can take it to 3.4-3.6GHz it's very good. True, in the midrange like the 630 intel is much better at video encoding. But AMD is much better at games per rating i.e. A64 3000+ = P4 630.

Is this cpu better than the 630?:
    Pentium D 805 2.66
It is cheaper and on the magazine it says that is has overclocking potential...someone please hep me with this and will it work on my P5GDC Deluxe Motherboard? I have never installed a CPU on it so if I need to have updated bios then forget it..

    Someone please help me!
    Thx, in advance...

In stock configuration I don't think so. It's not very fast on it's own. If you want to OC an intel though you might want to ask someone like theonejrs. He's got more experience with intel than I do.

    s3a,
Yes and no. The problem with the 2.66GHz D 805 is it's 533MHz front side bus. It has to be overclocked to 4.0GHz for the memory to run at stock 400MHz. To do this requires water cooling or better! A better choice for not much more money is the 3.0GHz D 930 Presler.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116238

Intel also makes a D 920 which is cheaper still, but out of stock at Newegg. Both of these have 800MHz fsb and are decent overclockers. My rig has the D 940. if I had to do it over again right now, I would get the 2.8GHz D 920 as it overclocks to 3.7 or more easily. My 3.2GHz D 940 is running at 3.75GHz, 940 fsb with the memory running at 460MHz which is pretty much it's limit. I'm getting 20K MIPS, which is almost twice as much as my 3.0/800 Prescott.

I would spend a little more now and forget about the D 805. The D 900 series is the better all around performer. Stick an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler on it and it will barely hit 42C fully loaded. It idles at 26C. 6 to 8C cooler than when using the Zalman 9500!

The bottom line is the Preslers are much better performers than the Smithfields and are well worth the price difference!

    crowy,

I gave the X800 GTO a mild tweak. The core clock is at 425MHz and the memory clock is at 1060 (530x2). Here's the 3DMarks!

Not too bad for an AGP 8x!

A nice healthy OC and a pleasent rise in your score. Very good for an X800GTO. But your dual-core really boosts that. Good scores :)

hey guys. i know this is off the subject, but does it matter how much memory uo have when you are burning a movie? i have 512ddr pc2700....will it speed up my times and preformance ripping with another 512 stick. or does the memory really matter?? sorry to get off the topic

Yes it will speed it up some, you will find a difference in start-up after you hit the power button, and also opening files to startup programs. These are a few noticeable benefits.
Not caring that a few programs are open while you are burning because you have enough RAM to handle the extra cache...priceless

ok cool so its not gonna directly affect the burning/ripping process than just make it easier if other things are running in the background... thanks

    cincyrob,
If you only have 1 stick of 512 in there now, it will make a lot of difference as it takes 2 sticks for it to run in dual channel mode. Memory needs to be installed in pairs, usually in slots 1 & 3 and 2 & 4 (if you have 4 slots). Single sticks or 3 sticks and the memory is only single channel. You need either 2 or 4 slots populated for Dual Channel!
