    baltekmi,

    I think what Deadrum33 means is that he is overwhelmingly happy with his new Opteron!

    baltekmi,

    Yeah, I saw it when I was looking for MB info at asus. Right now there are a few "teething" problems and a couple of bios revisions to cure some of them. Just the usual problems when something new comes out. Should wind up being a very popular board for the enthusiast.

    This is from the Tom's Hardware review you pointed me to.

    That's fastest, not as in clock speed but fastest period!!!

    Historicly, top of the line CPUs don't overclock well as they almost always have very little headroom. A good example of this is the x2 4400+! It can match and even beat the 4800+, which doesn't OC very well. If you have the fastest chip on the planet and the competition has to OC to catch up, "You" have forced them to do it. You aren't the one having to OC to beat anyone.

    I think that right now the motherboards are way behind the new CPUs capabilities. This is not unusual and it has happened many times before. When the 486 was introduced, it's performance wasn't that much better than the 386 it replaced, at least not to justify the price difference. Then along came the VH and HX (I think) chipsets and the 486 finally started living up to all the HoopLa. When the P4 was introduced, it was a dog! It was embarassingly slower in performance than the P-III it was replacing. If you were lucky to have a 420 Workstation to run dual 1GHz P-IIIs on, It would be a good while before the P4 would catch and finally pass up dual P-IIIs!

    Anyway, I think AMD is doing just fine. They're right where they said they would be, "a little faster than the competition, at least until the Conroe comes out"! I've gotta start saving press releases! Their 65nm chips are coming along well in germany, and again I've gotta caution you, they have already said that there won't be a big performance increase going to the .65nm chip over the .90 as there are not any major changes in the architecture but rather just what is needed for them to work on AM2. The forth quarter of this year should be a very interesting time for all of us here!!!

    Thing is, if you're going to OC, you're going to get a low end CPU because you can get the same speed or greater than a top end CPU. I don't plan on getting uber-expensive components but I'm going to get a 4200+ and excpect I can easily get 2.5Ghz out of it.

    As seen with my XP3800x2
    Stock at 2GHZ.Now at 2.650GHZ.
    No lock ups thus far.
    That includes 3hours solid playing uber soldier on maximum everything.(Great game by the way,just finished it today)

    2.65 from a 10x is promising, asi is the fact that you achieved it using Value Select RAM. How about changing your sig to say 2x512MB though, not 512GB, that'd be something!

    @sammorris,
    LOL ROFL!!!!
    Don't think we will see 512GB ram sticks in our lifetime!
    This value select ram will do for now.
    Down the track I will sell it and upgrade to 2GB top of the line memory.
    Want to get an aftermarket cooler first,although the stock cooler seems to be doing a fine job at the moment(though it is winter here)

    Really? Ooh, where abouts are you based then?
    Not sure on RAM, we won't see 512GB sticks in our lifetime if progress stays as it is at present, we've gone from 512 in about 2000 to 2GB in 2007, up to 4GB whenever that comes out. 4x in 7 years? to get to 512GB we need 256x what we currently have, actually that's only 28 years away from 2007, so 2035. I hope I'll be alive then, It'd be a tragedy to die at 47.

    I think progress will slow down though but it will never stop.

    No of course not, if anything I think progress will accelerate. -2 at night eh? Maybe a bit colder than here, but I prefer your daytime temperatures! Today it's only going to reach 11ÂșC, it's summer!!!!

    Not sure about the progress thing though.But it will be interesting to see how far things progress over the next 20 years.That would make me 63!Sounds terrible.If this thread doesnt get closed down I wonder how many pages long it will be in 20 years LOL!!!

    pff, it'll probably be closed down due to someone else getting banned.
    The other thread made well over a hundred pages in 2 years. I'm in the UK, essex in fact.

    This is correct in AMD's case with the FX-60 and FX-62. I believe they cap at the low 3 mark. So far from what has been written and benchmarked, (shown in the Conroe update link from THG,) this is not the case for the new Conroe cpu's.

    ScubaBud,

    I notice that you run an Asus P4P800 series MB. I have the P4P800-SE and it's a very good and competent MB. I have to be honest and say that I wound up with it pretty much by accident due to an impulse buy one day when I was at PC-Club. I just got lucky! It lets me run my 3.0/800/HT at 3.60GHz without a hiccup. It's quite fast for what it is. My benchmarks are right up there with the 3.6 - 3.8 so I'm pretty happy with it. When I get the D940 3.2 up and running, it will be interesting to see the difference. I'm shooting for 3.60 for it as well!

    @ theonejrs

    So far so good with just a mild OC and on 24/7 for nearly 2 years. :)

    sammorris,

    I'm curious! Why a 4200+ Manchester? Why not the 4400+ Toledo? The Toledo CPU's have twice the cache 2x1MB vs 2x512KB for the Manchester. I know it's about $100 (USD) more expensive, but it's also a much better CPU, more akin to the 175 Denmark.

    Just Curious,

    Sorry I couldnt reply in a timely manner, long weekend.
    @baltekmi
    Not to be a stickler for my grammar, but I don't think I used the word game anywhere. I agree if all a machine did was load programs and wouldnt run them, that would not be a benefit to anyone. In fact the only games I have loaded, Doom 3 and Painkiller black look and play better than anything I have personally gamed on.

    @theonejrs
    Exactly!!! I wish I wouldve done this sooner, and wish I'd have spent more time outdoors on the 4 day weekend I just completed.

    theonejrs: I really can't afford to make that small upgrade to the Toledo. As I see it, the extra 200mhz over the 3800 is more important than having more cache size as well, so I left it at that. I may have to scale back further, depends how much money I can get my hands on. 0% Finance is going to be used as it is. You forget I'm not as rich as some. I'd love a 170 instead, but not the place that's fitting it (or may be fitting it) doesnt sell em. Hmmm.

    sammorris,

    I forgot about this reply of yours.

    This statement is only true to a degree. You can still do a lot more with it if you use the manual settings in the set-up. The auto settings are usefull for getting a feel for how far you can go, but there are a great many settings that can be applied that aren't applied by using auto that make it run better. Mine would not run at the auto setting of 20%, yet that's what I run at now.

    When I installed this MB I started with the auto setting of 5%, then 10%. The benchmarks were slower with the auto setting than the same 10% done manually. I also tried the AI program that came with the MB, but the same thing. It just wasn't able to run with it's 20% settings. I've had it up as high as 3.70 but encountered errors while burning DVDs. Everything else ran perfect. Strangely enough, it ran cooler at 3.70 than at 3.60. I know that I could go back and fiddle with the voltages and probably get it to run stable at 3.70, but the difference in performance between 3.60 and 3.70 just isn't worth it. At least this is what the benchmarks indicate.

    Happy Computering,
